This is about the best comparison I can possibly do, to show you what difference deleting your backbox actually makes. The difference is really quite big. The back box delete makes for a nice change in exhaust note. I'm going to do this on mine for sure.

I owned the z 4 e85 too but mine 2.5 litre with hard top. I really love the z4 then i have seen you video i decide it to buy thank mate.
Just brought a 2006 2.5i SE and to me, I will stay with stock, I am in my 50's and the soothing low rumble sounds great from the inside. I like to be able to hear a bit of music too instead of damaging my ears Lol

I have a 2003 BMW Z4 3.0 liters and it’s stock but mine got a deep deep bass sound
Interesting that the pre 2006 l6 cars sound a lot louder and pop more just as standard. I know they are different |6 engines and the exhaust setups are different on the older E85
I think it's also because of ongoing legislation over exhaust noise etc etc. If I remember correctly it's a similar story with the current M2, the facelift version has a quieter exhaust for legal reasons.
Both sound great, and neither sound stick at all! Picked up an 06 m coupe late last year and will be changing some things out here soon. Love the z4 love!
I have a 3.0 E85 too - had a backbox delete on it, changing over to a proper exhaust system now with a deep tone but much much less volume

I have the 2004 2.2 manual. We should do a comparison between the 2.2, the 2.5 and the 3.0. I know the the 3.0 has the 6th gear which is annoying. Love my car though. It is such a character and makes long journeys a real adventure unlike modern cars!

Great vid joel, try to not enhale any more exhaust fumes(even if they are invisible). Because they are carcinogenic and harmful. Best of luck.
I’m not sure if it’s the sound quality but I expected more from Joel’s car. My Z4 is a 03’ 2.5i and boy does mine sound untamed. It’s loud, pops, bangs and a lot more. I suspect the previous owner increase the pipe size as well because my pipe looks new and it’s a 20 year old car. It’s still light on fuel though.

OEM parts for the Z4 are far better than any aftermarket mods, unless you have megamoney!

It's called a muffler xD sounds a bit different than my Z3 with the same mod, great sound from the engines.
The Sound generator ruins the sound so much, definitely get rid of it. It's fun if you want to impress people (remove the sponges inside it) and it's ear shattering loud inside. But absolutely not drivable if you actually use the e85 as a daily. Best Sound i have achieved on my 3 Liter e85 is: Mid-Silencer straight piped + Backbox delete. The popps are very loud with a lovely exhaust note. @Joel, you should have your Mid-Silencer removed :)
I have 2 Bimmers, a 2004 Z4 2.5 and a 2001 330ci. Both have the stock exhaust and both are way more quiet than the "stock" Z4. Now that being said I do live in the U.S. I wonder if our exhausts are quieter because of all the govenment regulations? BTW Joel your backbox delete sounds great! I bet it's loud though, I want to put a high performance backbox on, hopefully it will keep the tone without the high volume. I see others were talking about that too.

Do you find that the Backbox deleted exhaust makes it too loud for casual driving/music listening?
Running Racing Dynamics headers with the back-box delete on the 2.5i and the sound is much better than stock. Not tuned though so get a lot of pops and crackles. For casual driving/music listening it's fine, especially if you have the amp/speakers in yours. For long trips, no, unless the top is up. Still expect a lot of noise, but it's definitely tolerable for shorter trips under an hour. If you are driving to work on the highway though in a daily, def worth thinking about adding a muffler.
For sound I'd probably go for a super charger or open air intake instead to get a different note entirely

I've a 2.5si Z4 and looking for a backbox delete.
Someone suggested me a backbox delete with a valve. You open the valve and become straight. Otherwise keep like stock.
Have you heard it? Can you check if may be a good solution and make some video with?

Hey Andrea - thanks for watching! Valve is definitely a better option, as it will allow you to stop the loud noise when you’re cruising. The only reason I didn’t do that, is because it’s more expensive!

Honestly the stock sounds tight. Its really not bad for stock. It could maybe be a little more throaty but it's not bad The other sound is sloppy and puts me in mind of a yard truck or something on a construction site lol.

It’s not an MOT fail no, and doesn’t effect the fuel economy at all

14:13 How did Joel make the stock box pop like that? Mine pops a bit over 3k off throttle but its quite a short muted "bub-bub". Definitely not that prominent!
I tap the throttle really gently between 3000-3500 RPM when off the gas

I’m torn whether or not to sell my 335i and get a z4 😩
I love my z4 it's only a 2.5 but it's a fun car to drive but give me a 335i any day, twin turbos more power and more performance mods can be done than z4.

Why not have both I've got a 325 CI auto very nice for commuting and taking out more than 2 ppl and the z4 for the weekend or when I feel that the weather is ok for the roof down
Looking for a MAF adapter for an 07 3.0si. I need more info on the intake manifold though, as previous attempts at an intake resulted in regular startup and then instantly running wayyyyyy to lean and the engine just cuts out. As far as I can tell one of the main differences in the si cars is a different 3 stage DISA intake manifold? I had a 2009 128i that had the same N52 (the 1 was an N52B30) engine in it and it had a different manifold. Ive peeked into a couple of 328 and 528 N52 engine bays and those manifolds look different from NA 330 and 530s ive peeked at. Im not sure if an improved manifold and altered ecu programming are what give each model a bump up over the standard 28, and might be the bump between the regular 3.0 and the si. At any rate yet again the MAF sensor is built into the box, and I dont want to buy an intake not made for the car but fits the sensor just to literally cut out the slot and weld it to another pipe. I think thatd be silly, plus im not sure if itll run wayyyy to lean again.

The louder exhaust could be a tad wearing on long motorway trips...
Does the delete affect the horsepower at all? I heard cars with no turbos often suffer from loss of horsepower when things like the muffler are taken off.
Definitely hasn’t affected my car, it’s naturally aspirated anyway!
That’s called backpressure but actually freeing up the exhaust on any car results is a hp gain but just a muffler delete is a gain but you’ll never notice it’s mostly for sound but until you take out the Catalytic converters is when most of the hp comes in

my z4 recently started with alarm problems...seems like when you lock it it has a bit of a delay before the alarm activates and if you unlock it because you forgot something in the car car the alarm activates on the open button and goes crazy

It’s pretty reliable! Never had any expensive issues.
I've owned mine for just over a year and they are very reliable and cheap to fix I daily drive it until it gives up then swapping the engine with a 3.0 I love my car it gets may compliments and it handles amazing
BMW didn’t put any of their dodgy engines in the Z4. It’s the only BMW model where this is the case in fact.
Do an exhaust cutout before the back box with a electric valve
Would be nice, but that’s really expensive!
Can I ask how much you spent on the back box delete ?? I've seen a DIY job with electric valves from eBay seems they cost around £50-60 each for the valves
