THE LAST TROPHY: Lord and Lady Dunsford arrive at the Ponderosa to visit their old friend Ben. Adam finds himself the object of Lady Marion's attentions. deeming him more of a "real man" than her husband. A former big game hunter, Lord Marion has lost his lust for killing and violence. Adam then takes the couple on a hunting trip, where Lord Dunsford freezes while attempting to shoot a cougar. Oh but somehow it managed to struggle along without him for quite some time without him. I liked it just as well without him.

Used to watch this everyday with my grandpa when I was a kid. He passed when I was 9. I’m 23 now and I just got back into watching this a couple of months ago.

Adam was my favourite out of the other Cartwright's. Even Tempered, Cooler head, more intelligent, & even at times, & by his own Cartwright family, treated like an outsider, especially by Joe, as the Seasons rolled through.
Yes, he was my favorite also. He was the serious,, grownup, educated brother
He wasn't treated as an outsider, he chose to be one. Pernell Roberts never bothered to even put up the pretense of acting unless he in the spotlight and was central to the episode. He didn't want to be in the show and didn't support the cast in any episode he wasn't the star. He just showed up because he was contractually obliged to do so. In some of the scenes with gunfights Roberts looks like he is falling asleep. He drags his feet, walks in slow motion and looks like he couldn't bothered to be there. Adam might be appealing to the older generation, especially women who view him through romantic or sexual nostalgia. But to many new and younger viewers who are not viewing him through rose tinted glasses, he comes across as extremely selfish. No wonder he couldn't find meaningful work after he left Bonanza. He thought he was God's gift to acting, but no one would touch him with that attitude. Michael Landon and Roberts often fell out over this and that shows through on-screen.
Most people don't know the truth about the actor and his oversized ego. They just saw the surface of Roberts. Behind the scenes he saw himself as superior to other actors and would routinely demand more power over the direction of the script and other actors.
His career went downhill after he left Bonanza. He told the director when he left he was going to be the biggest actor in Hollywood. He actually ended his film career unwillingly. He went on to act in a medical drama that was canceled for poor ratings. He intended to be the number one male lead in Western films but ended up being a lesson in humility.

I have never figured out why some men equate sports hunting with being courageous. I can see killing a animal to protect your livestock or yourself. But killing an animal just for bragging right doesn't make you a man..

I’m a hunter but I don’t hunt for bragging rights. I hunt to put food on the table for my family and if I am lucky enough to harvest an animal I eat as much as I can. Yes I do like to harvest an animal that is a trophy to appreciate the beauty of the animal but not to brag. Of course we like to brag when we shoot a big animal but that is not the purpose of hunting. Hope this changed your view of hunters.

One of my favorite reasons why I watch Bonanza is to watch the opening intro and theme song for every episode. Why would you cut it off?

This is one of my favorite. But, Has anyone notice that The trophy and The mill have these 2 married women having issues with their relationships and Ben and Adam has no respect. little Joe is just a playboy chasing women. Only Hoss is most respectable and such a wonderful man may he r.i.p. died early in life. Any way, I love this show to watch since childhood. The best of bonanza is my most favorite ones.You learn something from each. 😊

I have personally seen Hazel Court, in many episodic tv series, and in a number of films. And unfortunately, found herself "typecast", as the usual unfaithful Wife, Mistress or, might I be so bold, as to use the term "Bitch"! She was undoubtedly, a stunning beauty, and well endowed, to say the very least. But, she always seemed to be "condemned", to play, vain, self centered, and a "user" of men, in addition to treating men, in a demeaning fashion. Men, it appears, were to be "mined" for what they could provide, in order to feed her vanity, and "foot" the bills! Whether Hazel, was merely acting out, whom she was, as in her real life, or, just a damm good actress, is anyone's guess. Regardless, she tended to command the proceedings, accordingly, Hazel, is especially excruciatingly vain and self serving, in this particular role. An exceedingly painful experience, to view her performance, in its entirety, indeed!.........

Why are Hoss's speech patterns so different from the other Cartwrights? Does the series ever provide background on Hoss's formative years -- background that might explain why he speaks with a southern accent and uses hillbilly vernacular?

@@pkgapp But children's speech patterns are not genetically determined. Children develop their speech patterns based on where they grew up and how their parents speak. Hoss, Adam, and Joseph all grew up in the same place, with the same parent (Ben Cartwright). So tell me, why are Hoss's speech patterns so different than Adam and Joseph's?
Hoss's mother was Scandinavian, right? If his speech is patterned after hers, then he should have a slight Scandinavian accent, not a Southern hillbilly accent.
Let's face it. The whole precept of the Cartwright family is ridiculous. Hoss and Adam are both much too old to be Ben's children, and they also don't resemble him at all. If the producers of Bonanza really wanted to cast Dan Blocker in the show, and really wanted his speech patterns to be believable, they should have cast him as an adopted son, or a perhaps a hired hand.

Truth is, there is absolutely no logical explanation for Hoss's anomalous speech patterns. This is one of those unfortunate episodes where the concept (big game hunting) hasn't held up over time.
This despicable deed is still being practiced up to this time by 'humans' who are not quite right up there.
