My father was 101’st Airborne too and would be your fathers age as well. He passed away in 2002 when I was 12. He was 56. He was born ‘46 and got drafted in ‘63, he was 17. Went to Fort Ord and Fort Benning was in Vietnam ‘65-‘67. Saw a lot of combat, I know that. Didn’t talk about it much, but grew up waking up to him screaming in the middle of the night from nightmares. That’s all I needed to know. Just curious, ask your dad if he remembers a William (Bill) Whaley. And I know it’s hard to tell but actually the guy @13:25 on the right, closest to the camera sitting down looks a lot like him, may not be him, but kinda looks like him.

NVA, VC were petrified of the 101st, they didn't know it was an Eagle on their Airborne Division patch, so they said "avoid the chicken men," "chicken men will kill everyone."
They were incredibly brave, tough and aggressive. 101st AIRBORNE DIVISION SCREAMING EAGLES. US ARMY

Yeah, we Americans weren't scared of the VC or NVA. Lol. Cut the jingoistic hubris crap. We had no business being there any more than China or Russia coming over here. Never mind how the whole thing turned out. We threw away blood and treasure, then ended up losing/leaving anyhow. The Commies...same thing, bled lots, etc....but they ended up winning....and....then turning pretty danged capitalist anyhow. So, yeah, hopefully everyone learned something, but I doubt it.

I agree that The US should have never been there! However I'm proud of our soldiers and they didn't lose the war! They really never lost a single run in that meets the requirements to be called a "Battle". Our government lost the war!! The NVC hid among woman, Children, Elderly and Farmers like cowards! That's the only reason they were not wiped out, and people like you need to get your facts straight!!! Same with the VC! They sacrificed the life of innocent people! Same thing that just happened in Afghanistan. Pretend to be a civilian and do nothing as Americans walk through the village's. Cowards!!! They took advantage of some agreements among countries and the UN, and its basically pretty simple about if it risk the life of a single civilian, you can't fight!! I understand that Civilian casualties are truly a awful thing but the rules around all that need to be modified and updated. Most of the ones claiming to know nothing, are full of crap! And war is terrible, but there are ways to make the a civilians not willing to harbor VC or Insurgents or NVC was doing it as well. Id drop millions and millions of flyers all over the country, letting everyone be well aware that if so much as 1 person is involved in any plan, attempt or responsible for ill will to Our Military then the whole village, City whatever will be destroyed in a attempt to kill everyone there! And offer a reward for giving up the enemy and anyone assisting them. This "I don't know" shit don't cut it! Sorry but war is war and wherever the enemy is should never be off limits to a strike from air or ground. It wouldn't take long to change real a civilians mind on turning a blind eye, to people coming and going obviously they know damn well. That's the bottom line!! If our government sends Americans into another war and doesn't finish what they started and all the loss of life for nothing and it was for nothing obviously whenever you enter to stop something and a decade later all Military personnel is yanked from country and NVC unified the country and slaughtered thousands and thousands more fellow Vietnamese. And basically the same thing just happened in Afghanistan. America needs to stay out of countries business, and quit proving that Americans Lives are expendable for the people in DC! It's truly a mind blowing thing when you put it all in perspective. I know the history and all that but I don't know what the hell congress, and Presidents ect were thinking. They should all be considered a disgrace to America because that's what the hell they were!

Either the airborne troops would land in muddy rice fields up their waists or get hung up in the triple canopy jungle. I was a common 11B infantryman with 82nd in 1969.
