Quite frankly, this is the best Navy SEAL documentary ever filmed. It was produced during a time when there was no social media and there were no books written about the SEALs and their exploits. The guys in those teams were not concerned with being famous, writing books, consulting for movies, or appearing in reality shows. These guys represented the quintessential "quiet professional" who was in it to fight at the highest level and nothing else.

I have to agree. It seems very grounded compared to all the tacticool-ed promotional videos we tend to see now. Puts them in a diff light.
You are right about this being the best. It was an official film used to get you motivated to volunteer. We saw this film to recruit us for training in 1970

There's a lot of Vietnam vets doing podcasts & books these days. John Meyer (the SOG guy) has been on the Jocko podcasts heaps of times, among others, has heaps of books out too. I love hearing him talk about his experiences.

Same with all special forces now. Nobody even knew what the SAS was until a team assaulted the Iranian Embassy hostage seige in 1980. I'm not surprised though, since our governments don't pay them very much and once you leave the forces, you're completely cast aside and forgotten about. It's all very well and good people endlessly and habitually just saying "Thank you for your service." But thank yous don't take care of you in psychological trauma. Thank yous don't pay the rent and bills. We also would rather vote in loud, crass politicians who just blow hot air and talk about patriotism and everything while not actually doing anything real for all these people they claim to have such respect for. We're all so easily conned and cajoled with the politics and the political personalities, while in reality completely ignoring the practical realities of what they really do for society.
In the UK, special forces soldiers have the highest suicide rates of all the forces. They're massively pushed and trained until they almost die to do what they're made to do for "the country" (usually these days you're doing things for multinational corporations interests), and they're drummed up into a psychological frenzy of achieving an elite military status, but once you've been used up, they don't give a toss and you're left to rejoin society with no useful qualifications beyond scrabbling for private security work. However, if you're f-ed up from all the trauma and can't go back into private security work, you have to train to be a postman or a cleaner or whatever else normal people with no qualifications have to do to survive. After all they've been through and done and felt part of, they'd rather just kill themselves.

Great documentary. As an old soldier, it always breaks my heart to see a young widow accepting a medal for her soldier, who never came home to her.

As a boy growing up in the Texas Hill Country I was fortunate enough to become friends with a Vietnam Veteran SEAL who lost the use of his legs due to an underwater explosion. I also became friends with a Green Beret who worked in both the Phoenix Program & SOG. Along with my Father who is also a Special Operations Veteran and a 1st Cousin who was a 1st Cav Trooper in Vietnam, I absolutely knew I would enter the Military and learn every skill I could. There Men shaped my world view and helped me learn to think critically and I’m forever grateful.

I love how we did PT in boots back in the day. Today we get lush shoes and shorts, and the PT standards are still ridiculously low.

Yeah and doing pt in runners rather than boots every day preserves your joints so you have lower injury rates and people are Ready for war
I served from 2003-2007 and we PT'd in boots and utes on occasion.
I still have the worn out combat boots I wore in SEAL training.
I served with one of the men in this video. He was originally with UDT team 11, then went on to Seal Team One, and PRU unit 1. One of the finest men I've ever met on this planet

I love anything that has to do with special forces. My cousin graduated from buds class 58. I am very proud of what he accomplished in Vietnam.
“Special Forces” is often wrongly used as a broad term, but that’s what SOF (special operations forces) is for. Green Berets ARE Special Forces. No other unit in the American Military is referred to as “special forces” except Green Berets. Not putting you on blast or anything, just saw it as a learning moment. Lots of people do it, so it’s a pretty common mistake. I didn’t even get it until AFTER I did 5 years in the Marine Corps.

I was required to watch this exact VHS video at the Navy recruiting office in Thornton,Co. To enlist for SEAL contract in 1987. Little Phillipino guy recruiter messed up paperwork. So SSG Mavado from the Army pulled me in his office. Showed my SF Medic video. So that's how life goes. I still regret not at least trying BUDs. Too old now. 🇺🇸

Those that want to be SEALs should really listen to what is being said in this documentary. The speakers are pretty much telling you what it takes mentally and physically. One second one minute one hour one day at a time.
One things for sure and even though I wasn’t able to serve a Hispanic male …. And living or being considered part of some 3 world country ..The U.S . The guys in the Choppers near the end are HAL3 Only Navy Gunships in the U.S Navy. Navy SEAL's created them back in the 60's along with the U.S Army very elite group of Naval Airmen. they worked and in hand with Many SF and Spec Ops units. today it is the U.S Army Night Stalkers that did it. back then it was the SeaWolves

My helo squadron was a direct descendant/derivative of HAL-5 Bluehawks out of NAWS Pt. Mugu. I was with HCS-5. Helicopter Combat Support SPECIAL Squadron FIVE. Only one of two SPECIAL squadrons in the Navy during my time.

I've read a handful of novels and books written by the men who wore the uniform. Did their duty, and did what their Country asked of them despite the hatred back home. I had 3 family members serve in Nam, 2 came home without so much as a scratch. The other one, had Chi-Com shrapnel up his back .
I had this on VHS LOL . I was obsessed with SEALS as a kid .

Great documentary. My buddy was in Marine Force Recon and said he would often link up with SEALS for certain “assignments”. He remembered one time where his team and a SEAL team joined up to blow up an enemy compound.
Force Recon...Now there is an underappreciated group of brave men.

@@hexebarya7395 My friend told me that it was an enemy complex. They set C4 or Semtex at the four corners of the compound and blew it. Not sure why, but he said they sent another team (which was a SEAL team) to assist. My friend said SEALS were pussies 🤣. Whatever that meant.

Read a book about the Frogmen of Vietnam. It said during B/U/D's the chief would say "go get sandy", which meant jumping in the ocean then waller around in the sand till no skin showed. The "Sugar Cookie" I believe it was called. I think my favorite thing about the teams wasnt just the action but that they were such good problem solvers. Tough is tough, but clever is better. This is so cool to watch, I'm at fort Benning right now for airborne school getting ready for jump week! I love the history of our military and that's a lot of the reason why I'm here, I want to feel the presence of amazing history of soldiers overcoming all the challenges

I wish the SEALs stayed the quiet professional like sfod-delta. I know there's a couple celebrity deltas but for the most part you don't hear about it, it just adds to the mystery.
Well Delta is a tier above the SEALs and they aren't officially recognized by the U.S Government. I'm sure that guys in Delta are a lot more pressured into staying silent than SEALs. Green Berets are an equivalent comparison for SEALs. The Special Forces vets definitely stay quieter than SEALs in modern times.
For you wishing them to be "quiet professionals", you sure do seem to be enjoying all this public information about the SEALS

Man they aren't lying when they say seal training is more dangerous than combat. Imagine doing all these practices like diving and parachuting when the technology is still relatively new and rudimentary. They truly are on the cutting edge
my grandfather was a seam in vietnam, it is currently 2022 and he still will not talk about what he went through back then. I can’t imagine the things he had to do

I swear one of the narrators sounds like the guy from a documentary I watched about the Stoner63 light machine gun. I remember watching and thinking he is very well spoken and intelligent but had an intensity that was very deep. Excellent documentary on a great weapon.

It was probably harder than it is now. E.g.. no medical rollover to pick up where you left off on the next selection if you're injured etc. Would have been barbaric shit to go through. Rogue Warrior has some good stuff in it about the process

SEAL training was freaking brutal back then. Marcinko does cover it in his book (may he RIP). They didn't have medical waivers, no recycling, no major PT prep time to get you ready for the training or anything. To give one an idea, I have seen graduation pictures back in the 60s where there are only 8-10 graduates of a BUD/S class.

There have been 11 deaths in BUD/S since 1962.
For comparison, the whole military had over 6,000 training fatalities in the last year alone.
We were South VietNam young Navy sailors , looked at them with respect , and appreciation , in Đồng Tâm navy base Mỹ Thì South VN . 👍👏💪

Dated a girl whose dad was a LRRP. He didn't say much but he always gave me the stink-eye when I came over. After the war, he became a veterinarian because he wanted to save lives instead of take lives.

Father was a Seawolf, those are the Guys in the Navy Gunship Huey's. Guys are stuff of legend day or night crazy weather SEAL's knew that if a Seawolf Team was in the area they would get them out every time all while providing Close Air Support and Extraction. Insertion too if need be.

My recruiter showed me that film in 1980. Watching that film convinced me to join the Navy.
I’ve had to pleasure of becoming friends with two Navy Seals.
One was a Vietnam era man. He was scary and constantly scanned the area. His guard was never down.
The other was from the 90s and in Kuwait. He was so friendly and out going. One day a lady at our work had her purse stolen. I’ve never seen someone run that fast or take someone down that quick. With one clean elbow he broke the guys nose and got the purse back.
Those men taught me a lot and shared some amazing and sad stories. It’s amazing what the human body can endure if the mind is strong.

Some of the best training ever..I alaays loved getting my ass kicked!! Lol..so much so I went back in at the age 45..became a cav scout..and scout instructor/ combat Advisor..so all the hard training I had in the Corps..from 80/84..Stuck eith me for years because It was 2005 when I went back In I always finished ahead of all the young pups!! Due to the intense training..and these kids were half my age..now I am fully med. Retired at 100%..but was worth all the pain sustained from 4 combat tours...watching these documentaries when I was a kid..actually helped to prepare yourselve..picked up the bronze star in afg in 12..

LRRPs for LONG RANGE RECONNAISSANCE PATROL, which was later LRP for LONG RANGE PATROL, then LRS for LONG RANGE SURVEILLANCE, but now all obsolete due to long range Drones and more recently AO drones.
I went through jump school with an UDT. There's an inspiring story a about that experience.

Osman is awesome. And back then team 3 was busy with tons of stuff in the gulf/tankers etc.
We both met at MEPs he and I are both former Marines and ended up being roommates.

I remember seeing a doc series in the early 2000's called Real Stories Of The Navy SEALS. The one I remember the most was an episode of President Reagan gave the ok to send in SEALS to rescue American students taken hostage in a Central American country. The SEALS were dropped off in the ocean at night a few miles from the shore and they never made it there. It was later determined that the entire SEAL team were eaten by great white sharks.

I have some information for you: the episode expanded on the aftermath of the disappearance of these SEALS. Years after, fisherman from off the coast of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic, would get sharks caught in their nets and would die. When the sharks were cut open, there was still the Navy SEALS equipment inside; goggles, flippers, even a still fully loaded MP-5 sub machine gun. They showed news reel footage from those Islands when it was discovered what the sharks had in them.
So, no. Those men were eaten.😉

You have absolutely no way of being certain of that.
They weren't eaten by sharks. What happened was the 4 SEALs were dropped in rough seas, at night, with faulty intel. They were never found and had drowned. However it wouldn't surprise me if their equipment showed on coast lines.

The guys in C&C used to sit on the beach where the seals trained and threw beer cans at them. The SOG guys of C&C were probably a cut above the seals in those days as the seals were operating on the coast where C&C were in The jungles of Laos and Cambodia.
