Squirrels and Rabbits--zone 5b--is have been using Blood Meal in garden beds and pots this year. My parents used it in their gardens. IT WORKS! I watched a squirrel start to walk into a garden bed and jump out and walk around it. I have not seen any digging in my pots either. Has to be re-sprinkled after rains. You do not need alot either. They hate the smell. It does stink and brings some flies for about the first hour. But I will deal with that instead of losing my flowers.

    Re: squirrels and bulbs
I had success by following this advice: (1) Make sure you’re planting deep (2) Try to plant at dusk or later, as squirrels literally watch you plant yummy treats and then go dig to find them (3) Plant your bulbs as late in the season as possible instead of early fall; this gives squirrels time to fatten up on seeds and other goodies that come down with falling leaves (4) Leave a thick layer of leaf mulch on top of your bulbs after you plant to disguise your digging holes; freshly dug earth is too tempting of a sight for squirrels who interpret that as a possible hiding spot for competition

My solution to squirrels and tulips is to plant more than they can eat! It actually works and, though I usually have a few clumps that get eaten, I usually get a pretty good show. Another trick is to plant them in large pots and cover the pots with chicken wire until they start to grow. That way, you also get a display you can move around.

About the Morning Glory question: A lot of people mistake morning glory for BINDWEED. Morning glory is a self seeding annual. It can be eliminated by removing the vines before they go to seed. Or pulling the new seedlings in spring when they're about 3" tall, before the vine starts growing. Bindweed is incredibly invasive and grows fast as spring warms up. It's root system can grow as much as 16 feet below ground. Laura is right, it will spread forever if you just chop the greens above ground. DON'T DO THAT!! My method is to identify it when it's only a couple feet long/tall twirling itself along fencing or other plantings. You can distinguish it from morning glory because the vines are more delicate and not as fuzzy as morning glory. Also the flowers are much smaller and usually only white or delicate pink. So I trim the vine down to about a foot long. Then put thick layers of cardboard close to the root stem to block the sunlight. Coil the vine into a small bunch over the cardboard. Wear gloves and use a paintbrush to douse the coil with a weed killer to avoid spraying on surrounding ground and plants. I've used Roundup in the past but now believe it should be banned from store shelves due to cancer causing toxicity, I haven't tried the Deadweed Brew yet. Anyhoo, the plant will absorb the chemical and eventually kill the root system. It might take a couple seasons to tackle all of it if it's pervasive in your property.

Laura and Aaron, my first post. Love watching your videos and picking up tips and ideas. On the deer repellent question, I have had great results from Bobbex deer spray. The stuff from big box stores barely slowed the deer's chewing, but Bobbex was an instant solution. My trail cams showed the deer staying at least 3 feet away from the azaleas which, until then, had been eaten to the bark. I even got some blossoms once the smorgasbord was closed down. Then I found out that they were eating all the blossoms off of my Vista Bubblegum in the front yard. Sprayed the flowers and now they avoid completely. I am now able to see why you praise them so much. 20 thumbs up for Bobbex. Just make sure you are up wind when you spray it. 'nuff said...

Hi, a few suggestions for your consideration. To replace your multi-trunk lilac, consider an Amalenchier (Service Berry, June Berry) like "Autumn Brilliant". I have several vase-shaped, multi trunked Amalenchiers and I just love their four season interest. In winter, mine have a beautiful (carefully pruned) vase shape, spring sees an absolute drenching in small white flowers. They're one of the very first trees to bloom, hence the name 'Service Berry' as winter buriel services in older times would be delayed until the soil was unfrozen and could be dug for graves,. The Amalenchier was the first tree to bloom and could provide flowers for the service. The delicate white flowers are followed by bright red berries that birds, chipmunks and squirrels love, and summer sees tons of small green leaves that flutter like Aspens' in the breeze.
As for Aaron's weed torch, I've used one for a number of years. The objective is to scorch and wilt the weed, not burn it, as Aaron heard. They work like a charm, although you sometimes have to go back and sweep or rake up the heftier dead weeds like big dandelions. Real time and back saver though!

For the squirrel tulip issue: I’ve used Repels All by Bonide or Liquid Fence Deer and Rabbit Repellent spray, and Espoma Blood Meal. I do have to spray about 3 times a week and put the blood meal down about once per week. You also have to spray again after rain. It can get a little costly, and the Liquid Fence does not smell great, but it definitely worked for me. This is my second year using this application after planting tulips and I found I did not have to spray quite as much as last year this time around as there wasn’t as much activity.

Per the Oregon Department of Agriculture, "State noxious weed quarantines prohibit the import, transport, propagation, or sale of a subset of weeds listed on both state and federal noxious weed lists." That said, if you know you are growing a plant on this list that does NOT exhibit the properties of the plant in other areas (the intention of the law is to keep noxious weeds from taking over native vegetation), I don't see that it's wrong to grow that plant in your garden. But I understand that if YOU do it, others might feel freer to buy plants on that list and may not be as knowledgeable about its actual development.
