  • 1893 was also the year that the Gaelic League or Conradh na Gaeilge was founded with Hyde as its first president. Its purpose was not just to preserve but to revive the Irish language. Conradh na Gaeilge did a huge amount for the Irish language. They had branches all over the country and organised Irish language classes for the public. They also organised irish dancing classes and traditional music classes. Conradh na Gaeilge really emphasized the importance of Irish culture. The organization encouraged Irish people to learn their language.

To Thomas: Yes 'Irish' does sound like English because the majority of its speakers are native English speaking learners or English dominant bilinguals and very few people put time into learning the native phonetics of the language.
On Radio na Gaeltachta you will still hear many speakers who speak with Irish phonetics and without English influence, particularly those in the over 40 age categories.

May I ask what programs helped you the most ? I actually just joined a branch of conradh na gaeilge called two rivers Gaelic league in Albany NY. I'll be doing classes 2-3x a week on zoom but I'm looking for a good program to study on my own with on the other days. Any info would be really helpful. Go raibh maith agat!

Not really, remember the Irish and Scottish speak English with a Gaelic accent. The younger girl could have done a little better, but it didn't sound English except for when she said "so" and "Gregory". I think we should be happy that we live in a world where once dead languages like Cornish, Gaelic(outside of the Gaeltacht) and Hebrew are spoken widely once again.
