    Wonderful stuff. You are doing things that I have wanted to do for years. When I first read about Aquaponics in the late 90's I was fascinated. Unfortunately I have not had time, money, space to even attempt a grow bed. Keep the video's coming I appreciate them.

    very cool love the solution for feeding the trout. can't wait to see a fully contained self-sufficient system. I guess the only real big set back for this whole system is energy that's a DARPA problem....lol

      Appreciate video content! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (do a google search)? It is a good exclusive guide for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my friend got astronomical success with it.

    You could try keeping mealworms seeing as how they eat bran, veg scraps and grain, they would be convenient to keep inside the enclosure, super low maintenance and high yield in the correct setup. They're very rich in protein, i've seen people combine them with vegetables to make their own fish food.

    I would look at convict chiclids for feeders. They breed faster than red head minnows and eat algae. Also crickets can survive off of some plant scraps like butter leaf lettuce or something like that.

    The trout meat itself down the road once they start feeding off minnows would definitely be really good for food as they would put on a better body fat content and get nice and pink, as they would in the wild, providing good flavor. Good conent, cant wait to see the additional progression!

    do you ever think about adding a kind of cat fish or even something like cray fish to the tanks to clean up the food scraps and if one of the fish dies to eat it.

    • @ForgotowToUserName
      @ForgotowToUserName 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i know this comment is very old but for any future viewers ( like myself) Cray fish are eaten by trout, so if you do crayfish put a mesh screen under the layer you have the fish in, so the crayfish are not all eaten and the left overs they eat will filter down to them from the fish.

    So long as the trash fish is a fish we actually want to get rid of a negative ratio sounds good to me. Those invasive carp that are taking over rivers in the Midwest seem like a prime trash fish supply.

    Pretty cool stuff. Fish fish. Like to see more of them fish. Got a fish cam in the works. Neat the way they jumped around eating the fish food. How long does the process take to produce the clean water return to the fish? Nitrates are what the plants eat. Just wondering about the duration of that cycle for fish poop to plant food to fish clean water. Really neat stuff.

  • @geofffalbo5900
    @geofffalbo5900 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you consideted black soldier fly larvae to feed your trout? With all your organic waste from the plants that produce veggies, it would be quite easy to feed the larve to complete the cycle.

      TheRealMartian Really worth it...introduce the larve to your trout raceway at the same time you feed them pellets. Adjust the larve ratio more and more every few days so the trout adjust to the new food. You can dump the plant waste and any dead trout to feed the larve. Lots of good videos on setting up BSFL bins.

  • @craigmooring2091
    @craigmooring2091 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know whether that was a typo or not; it is a common error. The figure of speech is "whetting" your appetite, as in sharpening it as you would a knife on a whetstone, which may explain the confusion. Many whetstones are also wet stones when in use. 'Wet' is much more frequently used, so 'whet' may be misheard as 'wet' when one is being taught to use a whetstone that has to be wetted.
    Anyway, I am enjoying this trip immensely.

    Two questions:
    1) what would you change so far about your configuration at this stage? It looked like you're working on your hands and knees when dealing with the fish - as a process, there seems like there's room for improvement there.
    2) Are the lanes of fish constructed with plastic over bare earth? How often do you expect those "tanks" to need refurbishment.

    I want to give this a shot. I would like to supplement their regular feed with a cricket farm and red wiggler farm. Seems to me you could also add worm casting to the fish waste which may minimally circulate but I would predict would have a minimal impact on the fish if done in small amounts. I love to experiment which makes me more of a scientist than Bill Nye.

    this is so amazing! i have just shy an my acre of land here and have been looking at getting another one of the properties in my area with a spring creek running through it to dig out a steady and raise trout to go along with my gardening homesteading. Many people with these spring creeks running through there lands have dug out steadies where they collected their drink water from back in the day and most still have trout in them! hoping to score one sometime down the road dig out my own bigger sized steady and raise trout! i was thinking an organic food source for cheap would be me going to the fish plant and buying different types of scrap also grocery stores might be willing to sell you shrimp and other sea food at a bulk price if its getting very close to the best before date. Great video ill sub and check out the rest! cheers

    • @StanTheMan709
      @StanTheMan709 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      one thing about that to is trout that eat a diet of mostly bugs will taste somewhat muddy, i fish in salt water and in fresh water for sea run trout and usually they taste very nice and sweet since they are feeding in the ocean on small fish and shrimp where as there inland counter parts taste muddy. i think that is why farms feed them pellets usually made up of ground fish But those pellets are pretty gross since a lot of them are made from talapia grown in africa and other places with slim to no regulations. either way itll be a fun experiment! and im sure once i get some trout they wont mind having to eat freezer burn shrimps from my friends groand cod hearts and other nice clean scrap from the fishing plant. Great channel btw! cheers

    With the choice of fish, any reason you went with Trout instead of a Carp? Was it a market decision (customers were asking for Trout)?
    Carps are omnivorous and cold tolerant (active down to ~50F). They are also good to eat. This would also help you with your desire for algae based feed.
    Keep up the great work,
    Rich C.

    I have a question: in a previous video you pointed out that compost is not an option for the grow beds to avoid contamination of your microgreens. I am wondering are there no risks from the fishtank? I had for a long time aquariums, they are anything but aseptic. Crystal clear water and healthy animals, yes, but the filters and all surfaces are loaded with bacteria so the water will be too...?
