Had '93 VR6. Bought new, traded in on a Passat wagon at 10 yrs/ 213,000 miles. Made me smile every time. Stupidly fast, traction control a hoot in heavy rain. Solo racing once - same times as the "5.0" liter Mustang ahead of me. A good driver would have done better. Saw 130mph once, it had more, I didn't. I couldn't use more than 8/10s, except the brakes :^) Perfect for family with small child. Carried 6 foot Christmas tree inside AND family. Steamclean fouled up electrics. :^( I still miss it.
I love my '90 G60 Corrado. Just finished a 5000 mile road trip in the old boy. People are all about the SLC version with the VR6 but I'll take my G60 any day. I love the shake of the 4 cylinder at idle and I can average as high as 34 mpg. Everything in that car feels right from the weight of the steering to the brakes. That silver G60 is a beauty.
Just had my Corrado G60 burned out. Some shortcircuit in the back while i was on the highway, only noticed it when the smoke started to fill my car as the fire was in the back. It was probably old wiring as the car was in almost new shape but had some electric issues with the lights in the cabin and trunk after I had the rear repainted. I watched it being burned starting from a small fire in the back to completely being destroyed by the fire. It broke my heart but still I want a new one. It happened a few days ago and I already miss the car, or even looking at it while it was parked. The engine is indestructible and mine had over 260 K miles on it. I had it for 13 years and once it got proper maintenance, I went through the yearly MOT without a hitch. It drives fantastic and the sound is so good, every week someone would walk up to me to tell me they love these cars as they look awesome as well. I'm thinking of buying a VR6 now, Once you've driven these cars combined with the looks, it's fantastic. Plus the good ones maintain their value. One of the coolest productioncars ever made and VW did indeed know what they were doing. Ich lieb dich, mein Corrado. Too bad it needed a war to build this great car.
I also had a ‘90 G60. I know what you mean. I wish I still had that car. Mine was blue. People would drive behind me to watch the spoiler go up and down! I needed a larger car and traded for the Classic Green Passat GLX. I wish I could have afforded to have both then.
I'm getting a 2.9 vr6 in white next week, I can't wait! My favourite car as a kid was a porsche 944. I'd never even seen a corrado until 2 weeks ago. The back reminds of the 944. Definitely think the rado looks better. I love having rare cars, also got a 3 litre merc 500 sel. Now I just need a delorean and a 944.
I had an old G-60. I loved it! It had some of those Volkswagen issues, but it was a blast to drive and just a beautiful car. With a Neuspeed suspension and Momo IDEA rims, it was sweet.
Still miss my VR6. Put a smile on my face every time I turned the key. Left it absolutely stock - all the idiots who chipped them and changed the airboxes, stuck bigger alloys on them etc. soon regretted it. It was perfect. More lift off oversteer than I've ever experienced on any other car. Was epic
Mine is chipped, airbox mod, exhaust, raised compression, all kinds of suspension work. Its smooth like butter and runs miles better than stock. And might I add i get 33mpg on the highway. I love it!
Old Top Gear, when they explained parts of an engine without it being automatically accepted that the audience would find it boring. I miss old top gear :(
I've owned à 16v 1987 golf GTI and à 16v 1987 Scirroco and they were à blast to drive. Now almost 30 years later I got my hands on a 1990 G60 Corrado and it is just amazing, The range of power is phenomenal for a 1.9 liter 4 cylindres. I will keep this one for many years and enjoy it !!
I had a 1992 SLC with beige leather interior in Dark Burgundy Wine color. I swapped out the stock BBS rims for 17" Fittipaldi Polaris metal polish wheels, a K&N knockoff intake, and a Techtonics tuning chip. The car used to turn heads all the time. I miss my old baby.
I owned a G60 Corrado from about 2000 to 2003. Loved the car, hated the maintenance bills-- cost a lot to keep on the road. Lived in fear of the G-charger self-destructing, as so many did after 120-150Kkm-- instantly turning the nimble beast into a poorly aspirated 1.8L plodder until you can pony up the three grand for a new one. The VR6 model was really the Corrado's best form.
@MrRoboto305 Standard operating procedure in the Corrado :) Mine lifts when entering driveways. It's a function of the rear torsion beam suspension design, stiffer than most non-sport versions (base model golf/jetta, etc)
There’s a highly modified Corrado with Euro plates that has sat outside a storage lot in my area for about 15 years. It was mint at first but now very rough. It’s rumored that it was brought back by a Navy sailor who was stationed in Germany and later killed in Afghanistan. It is very sad to see, but the lot owner doesn’t want to sell.
@jsuttonus Virtually every front drive hatch out there does that. Every golf gti including the current version, the focus rs, clio sport 200, civic type r etc all lift their inside rear under hard cornering. It does look scary but actually in a front driver where 75% of the weight is in the front it helps the car turn in and minimise understeer.
i have a 1990 g60 i love it and i got it for nothing from my buddy. He though i would have it for a few weeks and it would die.ive had it for 2years now and its still running.
Right. Looks like maybe the rubber stop was adjusted too high on that side, or maybe the sprung catch. Another giveaway is that the redline on the tach is too high - on the production model it's at 6200, same place Tiff complains about the rev limiter kicking in.
@gsxrful 16v is the base model naturally aspirated 4 cylinder (not available in the US I think), G60 4 cylinder supercharged is faster, then there's the vr6 witch is a v6 more powerful (slightly) but heavier. G60 is the best imho but others will bring up some of the reliability problems of the G60's supercharger.
I took my G60 out and put a 20v turbo lump in, BAM and k04 from an Audi TT then tuned it to 340 hp and it wipes the floor with most even modern scoobys and focus st's, you should see the look on their faces when you leave them behind
My dad and I have always loved the Corrado, although I've always felt we were somewhat of a minority in that opinion. I nearly bought one in '94 but it was used versus getting a new Golf. My parents were concerned about repairs so I ended up with the Golf. It had the 1.8 litre, an automatic, and did 0-60 in about 14 seconds (no exaggeration). Somehow I don't think I got the better car. :( This design still looks great to me today!
Why the G60 vs the VR6? I'm looking for one as well but I don't get the pros and cons of going with one or the other. I know the G60 is supercharged but isn't there more potential with the VR6? Either way, I'm just looking for one in good shape. Looking still unfortunately.
@devilman76017 It did quite often with my Peugeot 306 2.0 XSi 8v Phase 1 (N reg 1996). However my W 2000 reg 16v version of the exact same car does not do this, as the temps never get high enough to trigger the fan.
in some way that ability to drive on three wheels might be fun but in regular traffic this doesn't give enough confidence unless you know car's limits very well
@Tohafat Yes way, stock for stock the g60 will out pull an rx7. I have the same engine but in a lighter chassis, a scirocco....haven't finished it yet but it's not going to be no slouch i can tell you that.
the engine on the 1988-1995 Volkswagen Corrado Engine 1.8L I4 115 hp 1.8L I4 16 valve 123 or 139 hp 1.8L I4 Supercharged 158 hp 2.0L I4 16 valve 134 hp 2.8L VR6 178 hp 2.9L VR6 192 hp
Really? i heard the exact opposite, but i have heard of coil pack problems on the VR6, my one runs fine, only problem i have is my ignition barrel keeps breaking.
£19k new, seems quite expensive for the early 90s, when you consider a new civic type r was only 16k 10 years later. You can only dream of getting a new fast coupe or hot hatch for that sort of money now tho.
@devilman76017 yea alot of audis have the same thing. smart engineering for the time. cars nowadays dont need it so much because the metals used to make engines can release heat rapidly and heat up slowly.
It is hard to compare the Corrado with either the new or older Sciroccos. All Sciroccos were, in their time, similarly priced to top end Golfs. The Corrado was always relatively expensive. The gorgeous VR6 existed when Golf GTi's were not so good. It went out of production, partially, because of insurance problems. They were expensive to insure. The first Scirrocco was updated in early 80s and spoiled. One thing is for sure though, the Corrado was so much better than the dynamically challenged (although pretty) Vauxhall Calibra, with which it "competed".
I own a 1990 Corrado G60 and I wish my father did his homework before buying from the previous owner. I honestly love my car but I wish we have the money to maintain it. Chris Flanner vr6 is better and more powerful than g60 stop crying
If you still have it, you should do the 16vg60.
I got a 90 g60 also and I'm working on fixing and reorganizing all the wires that go to the relay panel
THANK YOU. Never seen this episode before.
I´m restoring my Corrado now, building it a 1.9L and using the G-lader. Love it
For 1988 it looks a very modern car
Der G-Lader produziert u. A. den genialsten Sound der Automobilgeschichte :)
Give me this format of top gear any day, reviews of cars I may purchase
Ikr. That is why I love to watch Fifth Gear since the Clarkson-rebooted Top Gear.
Love how this spent mosst of its time on 3 wheels in this video!
I'm getting a 2.9 vr6 in white next week, I can't wait! My favourite car as a kid was a porsche 944. I'd never even seen a corrado until 2 weeks ago. The back reminds of the 944. We had a G60 just till 2002.. was a very good car:)
I had one and holy lemon it was.
Old Top Gear, when they explained parts of an engine without it being automatically accepted that the audience would find it boring. I miss old top gear :(
I have the same one, 91 G60 ...my dream car, and now I have one!
Miss my 92 G60!! Next to my 2011 GTI? Best car I've ever owned!!
The shape still looks good - a classic
Having had a 1.8i, a G60 and a VR6 - three different cars all just amazing
Every time he says 'coo-pay' I want to give him a hug.
Owned one for 6 years. Bought it new and put over 120K miles on it. Gave me its shares of problems (nothing major) but I still loved that car.
I had a 90. utterly brilliant car. I got a reduced diameter pully and some odds and ends so it had about 200hp. beautiful.
@Mawerik024 and thats why in car racing they tune the suspesnion so it stays on the ground, becasue they got handling grip
"The Corrado has all the makings of a winner." lol
Tiff on top gear, giving it big leans on 3 wheels. Doesn't even break a sweat!
Such a great looking car, surprised to hear it is quicker than an rx7?
Why VW ever stopped making it is beyond me, it was a SUPERB CAR!!
Who said that it's stopped?
PAPADOPOULOS KWSTAS They certainly don't sell em over here anymore which is such a shame.
+Eric George I know.. They don't sell it here too as we'll! But CORRADO continues it's generations to Germany and I don't know where else.. Google it!
If they don't sell them in the UK then they don't sell them at all. No way would I buy an import.
+Eric George Google CORRADO 2015
I wish I could see a compare with the integra type r to see wich one is the best
it could be very interesting!
They really were bloody quick, those cars. Especially on the five star leaded jungle juice of the day.
The best car of VW history.
I love mi VR6 Rrado, hardcore machine.
Please VW, make a new Corrado.
@MrRoboto305 Standard operating procedure in the Corrado :) Mine lifts when entering driveways. It's a function of the rear torsion beam suspension design, stiffer than most non-sport versions (base model golf/jetta, etc)

Very impressive car!
i have a 1990 g60 i love it and i got it for nothing from my buddy. He though i would have it for a few weeks and it would die.ive had it for 2years now and its still running.
Had a MK1 Scirocco,and still got my VR6 Corrado,both top cars.
La corrado......che macchina SUBLIME. dopo 22 anni,la mia è ancora perfetta e va che è una meraviglia....
Right. Looks like maybe the rubber stop was adjusted too high on that side, or maybe the sprung catch. Another giveaway is that the redline on the tach is too high - on the production model it's at 6200, same place Tiff complains about the rev limiter kicking in.
i agree, check at 2.22! not been closed properly?
@gsxrful 16v is the base model naturally aspirated 4 cylinder (not available in the US I think), G60 4 cylinder supercharged is faster, then there's the vr6 witch is a v6 more powerful (slightly) but heavier.
G60 is the best imho but others will bring up some of the reliability problems of the G60's supercharger.
damn high speed three wheeling!
I remember when cars used to handle like that. It looks almost scary these days as it bounces round but in those days it was top class.
@Mawerik024 well all the power and weight is going to 3 wheels and it has less grip then 4 wheels on the road
I took my G60 out and put a 20v turbo lump in, BAM and k04 from an Audi TT then tuned it to 340 hp and it wipes the floor with most even modern scoobys and focus st's,
you should see the look on their faces when you leave them behind
Still got my VR6,had a Mk1 Scirocco as well, same as the one in the clip.
I put a twin screw supercharger on my corrado and it is amazing best car ever :)
I used to own a 94M VW Corrado 2.0 16V. I preferred my 99T VW Passat 1.8T Sport.
Corrado is one of the nicest VW ever!
I'd love to see a Corrado with a 1.8T 20V engine swap from an Audi TT
My dad and I have always loved the Corrado, although I've always felt we were somewhat of a minority in that opinion.
I nearly bought one in '94 but it was used versus getting a new Golf. My parents were concerned about repairs so I ended up with the Golf. It had the 1.8 litre, an automatic, and did 0-60 in about 14 seconds (no exaggeration).
Somehow I don't think I got the better car. :( This design still looks great to me today!
There's about a ten year difference between those two, and they had very different design directions.
My very first car was a 1990 Corrado. Stylish as hell, but cost a bundle to keep on the road.
ditto
I saw one of these recently in ok nick in IL...nice car...
my 1996 2.0 golf went 130mph without a supercharger! but I'd love to get my hands on one of these
yeah, but i think it was built like that. the hood line sits flush with the edge of the fenders.
3 wheels going round a corner = WIN!!
Nice car. Dreadful shut lines on the bonnet though.
Trying to get my hands on this car, cant wait!
it seems amazingly soft, well nothing that lowering it wouldn't solve :)
Why the G60 vs the VR6? I'm looking for one as well but I don't get the pros and cons of going with one or the other. I know the G60 is supercharged but isn't there more potential with the VR6? Either way, I'm just looking for one in good shape. Looking still unfortunately.
@zabijaq123 Not to mention the sound of the vr6... that alone is reason enough
@devilman76017
It did quite often with my Peugeot 306 2.0 XSi 8v Phase 1 (N reg 1996). However my W 2000 reg 16v version of the exact same car does not do this, as the temps never get high enough to trigger the fan.

@mattdagreata and it drifts in the rain like a beauty
Love Tiff's haircut!
2:30 very impressive how it resisted understeer.
@Tohafat
Yes way, stock for stock the g60 will out pull an rx7.
I have the same engine but in a lighter chassis, a scirocco....haven't finished it yet but it's not going to be no slouch i can tell you that.
maybe but for the 95 years the type r has been released so yes!
really, I agree...
In the corner it becomes a tripod... :)
the engine on the 1988-1995 Volkswagen Corrado
Engine
1.8L I4 115 hp
1.8L I4 16 valve 123 or 139 hp
1.8L I4 Supercharged 158 hp
2.0L I4 16 valve 134 hp
2.8L VR6 178 hp
2.9L VR6 192 hp
Really? i heard the exact opposite, but i have heard of coil pack problems on the VR6, my one runs fine, only problem i have is my ignition barrel keeps breaking.
@ultimatefantasy1 that's no big deal if the inside back wheel lift
£19k new, seems quite expensive for the early 90s, when you consider a new civic type r was only 16k 10 years later.
You can only dream of getting a new fast coupe or hot hatch for that sort of money now tho.
i cant find available vr6 corrado in my country, but ican find plenty vr6 golf xD, should i go to germany to get one?
Wow this was posted 10 years ago, that's an old video. Wow this is Top Gear is from 1988.
My dad's car ki is probably the most recognized corrado nowadays. to bad it blew up :(
@devilman76017 yea alot of audis have the same thing. smart engineering for the time. cars nowadays dont need it so much because the metals used to make engines can release heat rapidly and heat up slowly.
one of the best cars i had ( vr6 ) version
Ive got a '91 and a '89 G60, I love them to bits.
It is hard to compare the Corrado with either the new or older Sciroccos. All Sciroccos were, in their time, similarly priced to top end Golfs. The Corrado was always relatively expensive. ^ Tiff said its a pre-production car, so nicks and knacks are present. ;)
Gotta love VHS records...
Which was better - Corrado VR6 or G60?
If you love to do tuning, go for G60. But overall, I'd go for the VR6.
i am still looking for a perfect g60
I love my Corrado.
I own a 1990 Corrado G60 and I wish my father did his homework before buying from the previous owner. I honestly love my car but I wish we have the money to maintain it. Right now it sits in the work shop for an oil spill from the transmission. Then we had to replace the clutch because the design for this one is unsual from the rest. And now the starter of the car isn't even working.
whats with the suspension of that car??? whats it riding on?? BALLOONS :S
@Alekpowah
You can get a good one now for only 4K, depending on where you live obviously. :D
Looks like the hood wasn’t closed properly for half of the review.
More than gold !
Yep very early ones had no sun-roof,ive got one!
@SashkoDC, boot stands for trunk, and bonnet is for hood. Just a small difference between british-english and american-english. Not a big tragedy, just watch the goddamned video.
I Love Vw!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Annihilator1111 You forgot the 2.0 8v 85kw 115hp
hey guys whats better corrado vr6 or golf vr6?
The suspension also needs to be firmer
I`m 18 and it is my first car :)
I want one
what did he do to tha hood on passenger side :O
@ultimatefantasy1 The amount of grip given by the rear inside wheel in a corner is completely inconsiderable, infact even if the wheel is on the ground the weight on it is so small (due to the centrifugal forces which you cannot avoid) that it makes no difference whatsoever. On a 4WD (or RWD) car (obviously there's no such problem on a FWD) the torque is sent to the external back wheel (which has way more grip) by the rear differential. I can list lots of great cars that corner on 3 wheels
