    In this video I am looking at the Baseus 120W USB C and USB A Power Adapter model CCGAN120S. This 120 watt adapter is a example of a high technology power adapter. Of course, as of now I can only find it on eBay (link rot possibility).

    This charger is power efficient under heavy load but it does have issues with coil whine and negotiation with lower powered USB Devices. Not a great device for phones...

    What I like about the Baseus, is that it has PFC in all modes, this is something I wish all chargers did regardless of their rated wattage output. Also, its nice that it is able to handle its rated outputs when two devices are plugged in, many other chargers tend to fall short when double dipping. What I don't like about the Baseus, is the way it auto hammers a 2AMP draw for no reason, because it gets itself stuck in a auto sensing loop when nothing plugged in, simply because it doesn't know what to do with itself. Thats not good on your power bill and power companies will hate you lol.

    I bought one of these after seeing how good it performs. Sadly mine resets after pulling anything over 3 amps on a single USB-C ports or both combined after a short while. I'm curious what is your testing process beyond what you show us in the video. Any extended testing or testing using real devices?

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do test with some real devices. I do test for long periods of time on the better devices. So, this one would have received more use. 60W per port is correct so 3 amps at 20V for each USB C port if both are in use. I was able to hold this output for a long time. Any more and it cuts out. Also, if the device is using a lower voltage mode then the current drops for each port. There are a lot of details on how the devices use the power delivery specification so that starts to shift more to the device side (that specification, only one part of it is 800+ pages long though). Also, if you want 100W you have to make sure you are using a cable with an Emark chip otherwise the device will also turn off at 3 amps. I have been daily driving the 100W version of this adapter for months now and I was daily driving this 120W adapter before that. Charging a phone, watch, and a laptop (total is still less than 100W though). I do worry about these smaller/lesser known brands and their customer service though. There is always a chance it is broken or is a defective unit and it needs to be replaced. It certainly does happen.

      @AllThingsOnePlace  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would definitely send that one back. Baseus will hopefully respond and try to help you out with that. I don't use the 120W charger or talk about it much since it is a little unstable especially around lower power levels and it makes audible noise. Mine does work fine for output still but the squeal means it doesn't get much time. I probably won't ever do tests with devices like that in a power adapter video. The only real benefit of that would be to measure the total energy of a charge cycle and time to charge a device so these would be best in the actual device video. So, if I end up reviewing phones or laptops, then I would test it with lots of chargers, and test energy in to see how to most efficiently charge the device.

    My charger only triggers Super Fast Charging on my S22 Ultra for a bit before dropping down to Fast Charging. Is there a reason for this and is there a similar featured product that won't have this issue?

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That isn't much of a surprise. I think this is standard by design. The phone can only charge so fast so it rapidly switches between the modes constantly to charge as fast as the device can charge. Typically, anything above 25W doesn't go significantly faster, the time in 45W is relatively short since the device (phone) would overheat if it stayed in that mode. It gives you a couple percent boost over 25W charging but is far from 50% faster. The phone decides what mode to ask for from the charger. The charger isn't very smart, unless it is overheating it just does what is asked of it.

      @AllThingsOnePlace I need to test it more in depth, but I noticed my S21 Ultra charges at super fast 25w and then not long after will drop to just fast charging. It will go back up when replugged in. I unplugged everything else to test if it was being interfered with, same result. That was showing me 1hr 24min versus 56min to full. I read that super fast charging on this phone is 9.3 volts at 2.6 amps, which the specs show up to 20v 3a, so I'm not sure what to make of it. Got it for $29, so overall it's still a good multiport charger for the money, but I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing here.
      I also had some renegotiation quirks when I plugged in both of my boys' Retroid Pocket 3's simultaneously. One of them kept bleeping as though it was being disconnected and reconnected, so I'm guessing it's the negotiation. It did stop after a little while but was rather confusing what could be going on.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  ปีที่แล้ว

      True. Some specifically throttle by design. Thermally, many of these power supplies aren't long term output devices. It's almost like they need a short term and long term power rating separate. I tend to long term test the higher rated supplies though it doesn't make it into the video, smaller adapters I admit don't get much additional testing. I also wouldn't expect a failure in a couple hours unless it is a truly faulty unit, probably more like months or years.

    • @lesterhung7467
      @lesterhung7467 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AllThingsOnePlace false. i have tested 2 units, both failed within a few hours. Started at 90W, then within seconds drop to 75W, then a few seconds later to 60W, then hours later drops to 0W. HOWEVER, even though it is outputing 0W, it is still sucking in 100W at the wall. This of course makes the unit extremely hot. It might not have completely destroyed the unit, but since the output drops to 0W, I consider it a failure. The reason people buy 100W+ adapter is to use with their laptop. So it is expected that user will use this for several hours at once.

      It seems like this charger does have some issues with certain devices. I know the power delivery is not even across the ports. The only thing I can suggest is switching which port things are plugged into. The 5V port sometimes turns off the 2nd USB C port and can cause an oscillation, I've seen that on clone devices but I haven't seen it on this one. I generally don't use this one though because of the noise it makes. I use the 100W ones daily.

    @sevbait ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, after further use with my S21 Ultra, I can't get it to Super Fast Charge for longer than about 2 minutes. It drops to Fast Charging and stays there. The bigger issue for me is that it rapidly disconnects and reconnects charging around 4-5 times sometimes, and I charge at night next to my bed. My phone vibrates and turns the screen on when this happens, and it's just unacceptable. I'm going to get a basic USB power tester to check this thing out, and then return it to Amazon before my windows is up later this month.
    It's not just rapidly disconnect/reconnecting on my device either. My kids android devices are buzzing away if they plug into it as well. It stops after around 15-20 mins but it's just not right. I'll update this comment once I have gotten some hard numbers on the unit. I saw others on reddit trying to power usb x monitors with this and having the dumb renegotiation cause their screen to drop and return as well so it's not just me.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace

      Yeah, this is a pretty early unit for this power level and it is known to have some issues with low power charging and negotiation with some devices. If you want to charge a few things at once, the 100W Baseus charger is my go to. It does get warm but they all do these days the consequence of making the adapters so small. If you want a little extra power the Anker 120w and 150W aren't bad choices (these have more even power distribution).

    • @AllThingsOnePlace

      I think the GaN number is marketing non-sense. Baseus has in some cases made improvements to the control chips generationally but the GaN IC is probably the same. The 120W adapter has some issues, the current spikes mentioned in the video and the audible noise. I would go with the 100W if you can, the later generations did improve idle power consumption so that is a plus. As many have commented, I think Baseus is still working through quality control issues so for that lower price know the device may not last as long... It has a 17WH battery and uses 40 WH to get to full charge, DC, not including AC to DC losses which means it is even worse. Cool device otherwise, charge it slower for more efficiency in charge.
