Danny, I'm located out in the sticks of Southwestern PA about 70mi south of Pittsburgh. I have never had any luck with the 3 store bought antennas hung 20 ft in the air. I built me one just like yours and didn't even get around to hanging it and I was picking up over 40 channels. Let me tell you guys, this man is spot on. Thank you Danny, your a blessing
Danny - I built your antenna today. I made it from wood and it is right now sitting on a stand in my living room. I think I spent about $80 for the materials. I spent that much mostly because I had to buy a whole lot more of the metal screen that I actually needed. The plan is to put it in the attic. I had a store bought powered indoor antenna I paid around $40 for and it got me a total of 3 stations. Your antenna has got me 23 stations. When I put it up 20' higher in my attic I expect even more. You da man, Danny! From the Gulf Coast of Mississippi about 40 miles from Biloxi and about 50 miles from NOLA.
Danny, after watching several of your videos, I decided to build the ultimate antenna. I recently cancelled my cable tv because I don't want to keep paying $200 a month for basic tv channels plus the internet. I kept the internet and dropped the tv channels. I built my ultimate antenna out of wood for the back bone after painting it with used motor oil.Everything went well until I got to the soldering part. I have never soldered anything before, so I made a few mistakes and had to do it over again soldering the whiskers. One or two whiskers got off the 9 1/2 marks that I made earlier. The reflector isn't pretty, but its on there. When I tried my antenna for the first time, I was skeptical that it would work as I didn't do a great job putting it together. To my surprise, it picked up 90 channels with it inside the house. I have brick siding and trees all around me. I'm also 35 miles away from the TV station towers. Compared to an antenna I bought at Walmart, side by side inside the house, the ultimate antenna wins hands down. My intentions are to mount the antenna outside on a 20 foot pole, but a week of bad weather is going to delay those plans. Thanks, Danny for posting your video on how to build this antenna.
I made this antenna to specs provided by Danny. It works beyond my expectations. Without the reflector installed and mounted on a tripod on the floor it picks up 20 channels with no booster. I used 8 gauge copper wire and made a wooden frame. I doubt a store bought antenna would out perform this model. Thanks Danny for your design and instructional video. Danny, now I just need some videos on soldering.
Good of you to share your discoveries. Wish we had TH-cam back before cable days. Lots of rural people and those who can't afford cable are grateful I am sure.

Danny, I made your original version of this and I love it. Kind of a crude imitation, but she works like a dream. It is set indoors in front of the window, looking out, and it gets every possible channel available for here. (about 12 channels on 4 stations here in the Oregon mountains...). I learned something important I want to share: 2 of my stations are slightly different direction from the other 2, and I'd have to aim the antenna back and forth, when I switched. Now, it is set for all of them, without aiming back and forth, just by having the reflector element able to aim at a little different angle than the whiskers. Pointing slightly different ways, maybe 15 or 20 degrees, makes it able to pick up ALL the stations all the time, without having to re-aim the antenna when changing. Kinda like having 2 antennas. I don't use or need any booster here. All the stations are on low power repeaters not very far away (15mi. ?...).

Danny, I built this with a few modifications and it works GREAT! I’m 60 miles from all of the transmitters in Cedar Hill Texas, and I’m down in a valley too. I put the antenna in my attic and I get 58 channels! The major difference between mine and yours is I used 3/4” x 1” rectangular PVC moulding from the mill work aisle at Home Depot. Thanks!!!

You are the Antenna Wizard Danny! Your antennas outperform the 3 different commercial outdoor antennas I purchased. I was lucky to pick up 9 channels with the store bought ones, I now can receive between 24-30 from 3 different directions and I'm in a valley surrounded by 800 to 1200 foot hills.I wish I had seen your videos before spending all the money on commercially made junk. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

A Question Please how far, as the crow fly's(,straight line) away are the stations, my closest is 65 miles, and there is three, at Panama City, Florida I would really like to be able to get a few programs, a store bought one that claims to pick up 70 to 100 miles is about $150.00 . thank you for any answers Johnny b.
The problem is in the type of antenna. Most people, like you, are "antenna stupid", meaning that you have no true understanding of how an antenna works. Danny's antenna is vertical and multi-directional, MOST of the long range antennas that are sold are uni-directional (the reason you have to point them and turn them until the signal strength is maxed), some are bi-directional (front and rear), an a few are omni-directional (receive 360 degrees). Along with that is that most of them are designed for line-sight signal reception of a groundwave signal, where the vertical style can also receive skipwave signals, as long as you are not in the skip zone (dead space where the groundwave ends and the skipwaves begin). The materials used also make a big difference (based on their conductivity and gauge) and adding a reflector can help improve the signal reception by increasing the impedance of the antenna. In certain instances a much smaller "reflector" can be installed in front of the antenna to help draw the signal in stronger. An lastly, the orientation of the antenna is also an important factor, mounting a vertical antenna horizontally or a horizontal antenna vertically will drastically change the characteristics of the antenna and so will an antenna that is not plumb or level.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with others about the antennas you build. I just built the Ultimate Antenna and it works great! I built it in hopes that it would work for my parents that are on a fixed income that can not afford cable any more. I installed it today 25' off the ground with no booster, 65 miles away from the closest transmitting tower and picks up 19 channels. I have very happy parents! THANKS!

I watched a lot of your videos now and decided to try to make a antenna of my own. Mine has coat hangers and copper and a wood base. I now get 23 channels and they come in pretty good. Thanks for these videos. I give you full credit for my build.

Check on the Channel Master website using your Zip code to find all available stations and you should try copper wire it makes a massive difference.

So at 21:50 you show bending the LONG edge of the reflector, so how about bending the long AND short sides of the reflectors. Any advice to that effect ????

I appreciate your videos very much. I have built a smaller version on treated wood. I get most of not all over the air channels. I would like to know the distance from your reflector and copper wires. My v's are set of four on each side and two middle wires that cross at both ends. I found your videos and seen reflector. Your antennas look pretty good like the material.

I have an old one that I want to replace/redesign and I just saw your videos. Thank you. For your advice on how I can upgrade my design. I did not catch the dimensions for the reflector.
Just made the original antenna today.
Board, copper wire, screws, solder, and COAx to TV adapter. I was shocked that it worked as good as it did on the ground. I put it on the house and doubled the amount of channels.
From a store bought @ 10channels to the DIY antenna @ 115channels.

I'm in a tricky place, I'm 76 miles from Knoxville Tennessee and 70 miles from Lexington. I can get WATE CH 6 and WBXX CH 20 From Knoxville Tennessee but no VHF will pick up on the Channel master 4228hd . Also two channels from Lexington Kentucky, channel 27 wkyt & WDKY Fox 56 . It's VHF that won't pick up around here. UHF picks up better.

in stead of the PVC I used the top end of some old blinds cut in small pieces and worked perfectly

We are trying to not have to use cable companies now, and this would be fantastic as a project that will be very useful for me. I love your videos and I would love to make more of them, but I am a woman who is not exactly in the know of parts that I would need, so I would love a parts list. Pretty please? LOL
Me too, I'd like to know where he gets that solid copper wire 10 AWG. Or if aluminum will work as good. I looked at Lowe's and they ain't cheap on wire.

i made this antenna like our Man here showed us on you-tube and i live in Ottawa Canada this thing works i made a crappy copy out of coat hangers and no balum and pull 14 channels through concrete wall in a high rise

I tune in to learn from your knowledge. I prefer to not have the distraction of talking about someone who stole your ideas to make their TH-cam video. It is awful that someone has done that and you should make a separate video about it, I would watch that too. But, if I am watching a video about building an antenna, that is what I would like to see. Just my recommendation to keep the attention on the antenna build. A great channel, please keep contributing your good work.

I was wondering which way is the best way to mount the Antenna. Standing straight up, or laying to the side. Thank You for your time.
I want to build one of these antennas. I currently have one that was purchased, but, there are a couple of channels that I know I could get better if I had a better antenna. I just have one question.. what is that part called that you solder onto the antenna that you plug the cable/wire into. Is that just like what we used to use back in the day to add a cable wire to a tv that only had the two screws in the back.. Also, my antenna has an amplifier that I keep plugged in and it really makes a difference with that amplifier. It now has a short in the wire and without it, I lose all my channels.. I have to go out and wiggle the wire till the little red light comes on again. Do you use an amplifier with your antenna. If so, where do you just buy the amplifier part? ty your video was awesome, I'm deff gonna use this as my blueprint to build my first antenna!
Danny, do you have a list with all the measurements and parts? If you do can you tell me and others, I am looking at a science fair project involving antennas, and I think your antenna would be perfect to test (Don't worry I would give you credit) also how do you measure signal strength

Enjoyed your video. I have a bit of a problem, I live in a subsidized housing complex that doesn't allow us to put anything outside, not even out on our balcony. So i have to use an indoor antennae. I'm currently using a 70 mile antennae that just manages to pick up a signal that is useable with an amplifier. Now the ONLY spot in the whole entire place that seems to work is right in my bedroom, up against my bed, but because i can't put it on any kind of stand it shifts and even the SLIGHTEST movement will cause me to lose one or two channels, depending on which way it moves. It also loses signal when it snows. Does anyone have any suggestions on what i could try.. Would some kind of a reflector help?

Hey Danny, I got a question, on this video it shows the reflector curved toward the wiskers. You did another video, How To Make Money Selling TV Antennas and reflector is curved away from the wiskers. Seems Iike I remember you saying one way works better than the other.

Just wondering, what happens if you don't cross the wires going to the whiskers? Does it make a lot of difference? I have heard that if you ground the reflector it will work better, have you ever tried that? What about some pvc coated wire for a reflector? I just happen to have some from building cages.

I might try that. I bought one of those GE Pro antennas it works great and I get 13 of the 16 channels they say I can tune in my area except the 3. Its bugging the hell out of me.
I can pick up one channel 48 miles away clear as a bell, but the ones I want is like 30 miles away only a few degrees off. Could be a tree or anything.

For the life of me, I couldn't find the Pvc fence piece like the one your using here at either of my local big box stores. I love this version of the antenna and want to build it this way. Would you mind giving me the measurement of this fencing piece (the way you buy it) so I can find the right ones? I probably have to special order it. I found the lattice cap from the other video. Steve Fernino that pvc fence part is what I call “u” channel. It is what attaches to the side of the vinyl post to hold the fence panel. Search for a vinyl fence supplier in your area. ABC Supply, a national company, is one suggestion

Question. I have a couple hundred feet of solid #4 copper wire just taking up space. Would that size wire work?
