    Been journaling for 30 years now via a word document. About 5 years ago I started copying and pasting it all into evernote. I have mine with 366 entries in a notebook. Marked 01.01, 01.02, 01.03 etc... and sorted by title. Doing it this way, I now have a "this day in history" for every day of the year, each year I've written. It's wonderful to see how I was feeling, what was going on in my life, what's changed, what goals I achieved, pix, memories, screen shots, attachments, anything I want to keep track of and comment on. I still use the word doc in case evernote ever goes out of business, so I write everything in the word doc and just copy it into evernote.

      That sounds a fantastic system, Dan. Like how you have it give you 'on this day'.

    thanks for the video Carl. Maybe a little tipp: If you type the date like this: YYYY-MM-DD Day (2021-01-28 Thursday), you're able to sort it by title and it will be chronological sorted even if you change something later. I use EN for journaling this way and has set up a very similar template. EN works very well for me, because of tagging and the great search feature, when I need to find a specific note quickly.

      I used to do this, but then I got annoyed at always having to type in so many numbers for every day. I like the method via the video much better.

      Perfect tip! It's also the international standard of dates. I've shortened it to 210128 to make it faster to write.

    Thanks Carl for your video, great ideas.
    However, for me simplicity/portability is key or I won’t do it. I’ve been journaling in Evernote for 3 years and paper before that.
    I just create a journaling folder, with separate categories for year and month.
    I just record the date every day, and “dump” my thoughts into the day, randomly, with whatever emotion I’m feeling. No structure at all, and I think that’s the whole idea. My journal is like my own private “shrink” listening to me rank away. In doing so, I usually come up with my own answers. Or so I think.
    The real benefit with Evernote is the search ability, years later. I just searched for something the other day from years ago, and was amazed at my progress on a certain topic or thoughts regarding others.
    Simplicity, Evernote search capability, minimalist structure.
    This works for how I think.
    Best regards Carl,
    Jim

      Hi Jim, that's exactly what journaling should be. Your own personal place to record whatever you want in whatever format works for you.

    Carl, I have toyed with all kinds of "to do " apps over the years, and most just don't cut it, at least the way I work. Eventually, I created a system for myself that worked well, and then I came across your Time Sector Workshop which mirrored much of what I was doing, but you had refined it took it much further than I ever did, so thank you for that. But now I'm running into some confusion. I have used Evernote for years, so I thought I would take a look at this video and you make some good points. I get the idea of journaling, which I am going to try. However your template covers daily activities. One of my "routines" is to journal and plan tomorrow in the evening. It's a little late to answer the question "what do I want to accomplish today?" when it's the end of the day, which conflicts with your mantra to journal at the end of the day for 10 minutes, unless now you're suggesting to journal twice a day which sort of goes against the grain of "time management"

    • @Carl_Pullein
      @Carl_Pullein  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Garry, From a personal perspective, I've always journaled in the mornings. I do occasionally write at night, but that's rare. I advise people to just journal. Whether that is in the evening or mornings it doesn't;t really matter and I would always recommend you create a journaling routine that works best for you.
      When I do my journal in the mornings, I do begin with the previous day's journal to check off my evening routines and if I feel compelled to write in something I learned. I will also add a picture from that day too. Then I create a new journal entry for the new day set out my objectives and dump my thoughts.

    I have created a table with titled cells to capture specific journal content to be sure I address what I consider to be important aspects of the day, such as what I accomplished and even a soapbox section for personal rants or musings on events. I include receipts, seating charts for an event (well, not lately) , sometimes a snip of my calendar and links to other detail in some of the cells. It translates very well for quick entries from my mobile device. Tags include the names of people I met with that day and projects. I do tag each entry as "journal" and file it in my main notebook, but am debating the advantages of creating a separate notebook for my journals. I appreciate all the ideas you share. Thank you!

    Actually to change the date sort from ascending to depending and back just click on the date sort again and the little arrow will change.
    I too use EN for a journal but I just enter significant events or things I want to remember long term. Maybe a conversation I had with my daughter or wife, maybe a work event of some kind, anything I want to document and remember long term. I just set up 1 notebook called Journal and I let created date sort put it in year order. One piece of functionality I really like and use in EN is the ability to change the created date. If I dont make the journal entry on the day it actually happened I can change the created date to the correct date. Would like to see more EN content. Thank you for the video today.

    I just created a journal based on your ideas. My one suggestion if you load up the legacy version for Evernote you can after creating the pages use the make a contents page remembering to select all the pages in reverse order to make it in the right order. It is a shame this has gone in the latest version of the program.

    I use a template for my daily journal also. It is in Dutch though.
    Basically:
    It uses a theme per month and a quote of the day (both from the Daily STOIC Journal by Ryan Holiday.)
    It has a section with my morning routine activities using checkboxes
    It has a section for notes that I jot down during the day, this is more your basic journaling
    It has a checklist with the planned activities or actions of the day with some goals setting also with checkboxes. This list is part everyday stuff and next actions for that day that I planned either in the weekly review or in the evening before.
    Also a checklist where I can note unplanned activities and what I did there and why and what goals it supported, if at all
    I have a specific checklist for all the training I do with a checkbox per training that I want to do that day and results. (Training is hiking, biking, swimming, standing meditation, various Tai Chi and QiGong Traning forms, stretching exercises such Yi Jin Jing.)
    My reading list for the day, which consist both fiction and non fiction. Both books and articles, but also specific subject matter videos
    And finally a section with notes where I reflect on the day, what went well, what not so well and what can learn from this.
    Also I look forward on the morrow and fill that section on next day’s note.
    As you may notice, my template is pretty heavily influenced by Stoicism.
    To be true, there are times that I follow this schedule religiously and other times only sketchy. However it is always in my mind.
    I use this template to generate a daily calendar. Every two weeks or so I take some time to generate a daily calendar per day for the few weeks. I find this works better for me then doing it on a daily or weekly basis. I have a note that I use as the template. There is shortcut to that template note in my list of shortcuts. This works better for me than creating an evernote template.

    I like this idea, but I hate having notebooks for each month. Instead I have a stack called "Journals", then a Notebook called 2021 Journal. Then, inside the notebook I use the sort by function to sort by created date, and also tick the "show in groups" option so it groups the entries by month. Seems to work perfectly for me that :)

    • @Carl_Pullein
      @Carl_Pullein  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is just one way of doing it. Your way works and you can also do it by tag.

  • @ipengiewoo

    Great vid! Is it better to have one year notebook with all your journal notes inside instead of one notebook for each month?

    • @Carl_Pullein
      @Carl_Pullein  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That really should be your choice. I like having months inside my notebook, but I know other people who prefer one note for each month.

    A man like you should give Obsidian a try, I think 😊 Especially if you like a more fluid/non-hierarchical framework, without all the organization/structure BS. It’s amazing when your notes (thoughts) can flow freely.

      I looked at Obsidian (Roam Research and Notion) and none of them would work for me. I've been with Evernote for 11 years now. It works, I have thousands of notes in there and I know how it works and where everything is.
      I don't have time to waste on learning new apps.

    Hi, Carl. I use Evernote for a lot of things (file cabinet, web clipper...) but not for journaling. In fact I don't need to have 1 or 2 checkboxes per day and a lot of text of what I've been doing that day. I use my Google Calendar as my journal. Easy because I use Calendar every day, without creating templates and new notes per day... I only fill in what was important that day as a event and in that event I can add the location of the event, a description of it, a picture or a link... So I have everything together in my calendar without having to pay € 26 per year like for using Day One (I used it for a while, but I can do better in my Google Calendar)

    Ctrl+J [Cmmd+J on toy computers] is according to Evernote coming back... ... as per their email this week, along with "new" [sic] feature of toggling on or off the spellchecking as you write... ... er, never left the version 6/Legacy. I do wish companies were just more honest where they also have access/control of our data, it might inspire confidence, which leads to sales, which leads to the continuation of your jobs... ... Sure they might get the hint. : )))))

    If you use the international standard for dates; YY-MM-DD, your notes would sort themelves, like this 21-01-22, or even easier; 210122 wich I use. Then every day would be in perfect order; 210123, 210124... etc...

      It depends on what you want to use it for. Evernote wasn't designed to be journal. If you want to make it a journal, you have to use your creativity.
