Like tools in a carpenter’s apron, lures can have wide-ranging uses beyond the manufacturer’s design intent. Patrick Walters discusses such a situation with his preference for fishing deep-diving jerkbaits over shallow-running models around shallow water cover.
The Rapala Shadow Rap Deep Jerkbait is designed to cover the 4- to 8-foot range, but Patrick prefers using it in the shallowest of water where you’d often throw a flat-sided crankbait. It’s all about deflection - the bill edges are similar in design to a coffin or flat-sided crankbait and produce excellent deflection characteristics. This makes it an effective lure around hard cover like wood, rocks, docks and other manmade elements.
Why not just tie on a flat-sided crankbait? According to Walters, bass are less conditioned to jerkbaits around shallow water cover so it’s part conditioning and part profile - a minnow profile is universally appealing to gamefish and sometimes outperforms crankbaits. The ultimate takeaway here is to look at your baits with an open mind. Experimentation often leads to successful “sleeper” tactics that can give you an edge.

I think the action on the deep dive seems more realistic also. For some reason a shallow bill on the long suspended profile of a jerk bait looks more mechanical amd less realistic in action. Predictable even.

Catch bass that others are missing. He explains the coffin bill performs like a squarebill while showing bass a unique and highly desirable profile (a minnow). If you get snagged, it's not usually hard to recover a jerkbait if you're fishing from a boat.

You do know there are such things as squarebill jerkbaits that do exactly this but get hung up far less???
He addresses squarebills in this video if you watch it through. A jerkbait is a minnow profile and wayyy less seen than shallow cranks in this environment.
Agreed. Presentation on a JB vs a SB for winter bass you just can't beat the JB this time of the year. As mentioned the profile, there is the action, just not the same.
