I haven't specifically tried that, but yes, I don't see why it wouldn't work. But if you are ok with the end result being a stereo track, you could simply choose to Mix Down a solo'd track and apply a send effect - which would keep the process 100% digital and you don't need to cable anything - and then re-import the resultant stereo mix down track back into the project. So, you have options...
Oh, I totally hear ya, just trying to downplay the praise (although I do truly appreciate it). I'm just happy to hear my videos help fellow multitrack musicians or give them some ideas to chew on for their own projects. Thanks for watching and for the kind comments!
I’m assuming it’s possible to mix down selected tracks to a new track, as opposed to a complete mixdown. Is that correct ? Forgive me if you’ve covered that previously, I’ve been watching most everything R20 before I commit to buying one, and I’m not certain about that detail. I realise that it’s ’destructive editing’ if I subsequently record over the source tracks. Thanks in advance, and thanks for all the excellent information you provide. The send/receive thing is *very* useful. ✌ 👽 🎸
When you use the Mix Down option on the R20 or R12, it does not destroy the original tracks. It creates a completely new track that gets placed in the AUDIO folder of the SD card. Then you just have to import that new track where ever you want it. I think this video might answer your questions a little better: th-cam.com/video/JYfAHu39vLo/w-d-xo.html
Yep. As long as you can create a clean, 100% pan in the left and right directions, it should work with say, an older R8 as well. I didn't specifically test it with the R8, but no reason to believe it wouldn't work.
"Normal" 1/4" to 1/4" TS cables will work. I just used short 1 foot cables to minimize picking up any hum from lines that are crossing all over the place on my desk.
You're not missing anything. The R12 has input routing because there are only 2 inputs for 8 tracks. The R20 has 8 inputs and you can only record 8 tracks at a time, so the hardware is internally wired from certain inputs to specific tracks. Input 1 can only route to Track 1 or 9; Input 2 can only route to Track 2 or 10, and so on. While recording with the R20 track routing is never a problem because it's so easy to move tracks around on the touchscreen. I explain this in a few of my tutorials, but it should be clear from this video: th-cam.com/video/EuVe58WC-ZE/w-d-xo.html
Thanks Gaz for another great video, this trick opens up all sorts of possibilities for the creative musician.
You're welcome! Happy to help!
Clever idea. Should also work to layer insert effects on the R12 without an external pedal.

@@GazRendar Good catch, that's a cleaner way of doing it
Great idea
I own the R12 (love it ) , this is very useful . even bought your stylus ;)
Haha, just to clarify, that's not my stylus...I didn't design it, and I definitely don't get any kind of commission from sales. Wish I did, though!
@@GazRendar point being loving the videos , alll your techniques are awesome ... :)

I too use the stylus you recommended, thank you so much

@@GazRendar Thank you, I appreciate that you took the time to answer that.
Great tip! This should work with older models too what do you think?

@@GazRendar nice i'll try it out. But it only works with patch cables (not "normal" cables) right?

@@GazRendar alright thanks for the informations.
Am I missing something on the R20? Input routing possible on the R12 but not the R20?
