  • December 1983 episode of the San Diego public access TV program Club 33 featuring the Tell-Tale Hearts performing "Hey Tiger." The Tell-Tale Hearts evolved from an earlier band called the Mystery Machine, featuring Mark Z (later of Manual Scan and the Shambles). Their first gig in September 1983, a yard party at 5266 Cobb Street (off Clairemoint Mesa Boulevard), was also the first public show played by the Gravedigger V (though they were called the Shamen at the time). The band split in 1986, but their popularity among fans of DIY garage rock continued to grow.
In 1994, they partially reunited to take part in a five-date West Coast tour to promote their High Tide anthology. However, with Bill Calhoun living in the Northwest and bassist Mike Stax's reluctance to participate, the odds seemed slim for any further shows. On November 11, 2004, the Tell-Tale Hearts reunited for their first performance in over ten years with singer Ray Brandes, guitarist Eric Bacher, drummer Dave Klowden, and bassist Mike Stax (organ player Bill Calhoun was living in Nevada and unavailable). More reunion performances took place September 28, 2007, at the Casbah, and the following day at the Adams Avenue Street Fair on September 29.
In late 2017, Munster Records released a seven-inch vinyl EP featuring the earliest recordings of the Tell-Tale Hearts, 517 Fourth Avenue, taped live in the studio on March 7, 1984, with a picture sleeve including liner notes by Greg Prevost.
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded between from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on TH-cam or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

This band is awesome-sure wish there was easy access to their music. I would have been shimmying across the floor to this.

For the record Club 33 did not make this footage. It is from a 3 episode Tv show done by Santana High School Students and Cox Cable for Junior Achievement Club 33 just stole our footage and idea. I was in charge of production and booking the bands.
