  • This week's second question of the week is "What to do when you disagree with your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teacher on your belt promotion."
If you're having a disagreement with your teacher about BJJ belt level, here's how to handle it. I cover things like the importance of communication, the importance of listening to your teacher, and the importance of honoring your teacher's decision. Hopefully, after watching this video, you'll have a better understanding of how to handle your belt level and progress on your martial arts journey!

Thanks professor. I believe that regardless of the color of your belt in any martial art, the mat doesn't lie. It is a wonderful teacher on the things we need to improve. In the same regard, if a person has knowledge that will benefit your journey, and is willing to teach, it doesn't matter the color of their belt either.

I overheard a guy ask my coach “where’s my purple belt?” I cringed. Like bro why would you ask that.. smh.

One thing training Brazilian Jiujitsu has reinforced for me is that your skill and physical capabilities are more important than your belt. In that same train of thought, would you encourage students to ask for periodic check-ins on what they are doing well, what they need to improve (generally or specifically), and what they should focus on for a bit if they feel lost or confused on their journey?

I think it is helpful from time to time to ask your instructor what things you need to work on, especially after rolling aka sparring with your instructor on the mat.
