Another great video. I love that you don’t necessarily teach technic but rather culture. I’ve been training for almost 3 years now at Carlson Cracie miami. We’re more of competition school. Most of us are Latin. Cuban, Colombian, Ecuadorian, Panamanian etc. we have guys from Jamaica and Haiti and Trinidad. A bunch of cops and firefighters(I’m a firefighter and of Cuban decent). But the universal language is Jiu Jitsu!! Thank you from your style of videos. It’s very informative!! Please come visit us if you’re ever in the. 305!
Schools I notice are not clique-y by race but more by profession or social Group. Cops train alot and they tend to stick together, same with the people that were or are wrestlers in college, and then the rest of us
It's interesting seeing how other schools are. I see so much positivity for the most part from all of what I see on here and online in general. The one that we did train at until recently had zero camaraderie, no support, nothing. The owner/instructor wasn't supportive at all. In our time there, there was 2 different competitions for everyone to compete at. The one that he showed up at, he did little to help his students out, even left early before my one child was done competing, and wouldn't even go to the other tournament that was in our town. I ended up being the "coach" for the day, and I barely train... I didn't want to be in that position but since the owner of the gym wouldn't even acknowledge the tournament, someone had to try and help the kids.
Is it normal for people to hang out by belt colors? At my school the white belts hang out together, the blues are kind of in between, and the purple and up hang out together. Maybe it's not the belt color but it's just the people they started with or train with more regularly.
I respect people of any belt at the gym, and hang out with people I get a long with. That being said, my closest friends are the guys I went from white to brown with. Lots of years on and off the mats growing together made us close even though we live in different areas now.
As a person who moved to Hawaii at age 10 from St. Louis, MO, I was definitely the Cracker to "the soup" for the first few years until I figured out how to get in the bowl. It was rough when I first got there. I moved back to MO when I was 24 and felt like I took a 25-year step back in time socially thinking. Love your videos Prof. Ryan. Thank you.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Prof. Ryan. I train at another GJJF affiliate and we pretty much all get along. It's the white belts (myself included) that spaz out and try to kill each other during sparring. Lol
Off topic question: I've been to a school where they have paired me off, as a white belt, with a blue or purple. For me, this seems great at first. Unfortunately, I very quickly catch the drift that this guy wants to pair up with a brown or black. Maybe they don't realize that teaching is a great way to consolidate knowledge. This has happened to me twice at different schools as a beginner. Should I just suck it up? Or is it always like this? When I become a blue will the purples or browns really want to pair up with me? Have others experienced this? Is it just the way it is?
Ryan, what according to you are the practical ways to stop cliques, build camaraderie, fun and respectful environment in a school across the board? Many schools have different class levels, like Fundamentals and Advanced and the older advanced students seem to have a clique that tends to be different from beginners.
Man I love you man I wish I was out there. I was having some doubts about why I should switch my gym and I don’t want to go the spiteful route even though I will miss a lot of the people there but I have to go to a smaller gym and I hope I get what I’m looking for . There’s probably some changes that I need to undergo at the same time and it’s all a learning experience. But through your video with your positive attitude, it’s brought me some light and respect. In my gym we are conducting training outside, under tents for about two months now. Usually groups of no more than three. But I know where you coming from and I hope that things get better soon!
At my school the groups are more based on the day you train monday wed fri are 1 coach and Tuesday Thursday its the other coach. We all tend to pick a coach and train on their days
We do bjj mainly for a common point, fighting. But like you know, we are all different. In a big academy the problem is also that you don't even know a lot of people... Personaly in my big academy I often prefer to come train in the early morning, 7 AM, because classes are usually 5-10 people, and in small groups usually no cliques in.In the evening, it's a different story with very big classes.

Call em out on it. Make a subtle obvious comment in conversation like "those guys wont roll with me." Make sure they hear u, pretty sure they will all feel like dickheads. Throw a bitchin party on a fight night, invite the ppl in class that are cool with u. They will come back to class like "oh why didnt u go to the party?" Well they werent invited for taking themselves too seriously. Sometimes the white belt could be the coolest dude u ever met cuz he dont have his belt up his butt!
My school is good, but that gym location always reminds the worst time of my late 20s in that town. Just something about that area I feel has a shadow over my head, and I don't feel like I'm moving on from the past. Is this a valid reason to change school? As far as cliques go, you just need to have a better life outside of BJJ, so stupid cliques at a BJJ gym have no bearing on your social life.
i only say that for someone who is a little of many ethnicities. for instance, i find it weird for me to hate someone for being (native) hawaiian when i have native hawaiian blood coursing through my veins.

And just like what you said about California, get the same ting in Grand Rapids. Get little bit different groups, like da popolo's, Africans from Africa, Indians from India, Asians from Asia, Mexicans from Mexico la-dat, but they no mix like how get in Hawaii. I train at one Krolyer Gracie affiliated academy in Grand Rapids. One day I like come Texas, drop in and train wit you fo one week. I just wen watch your video about starting one BJJ school. I've seen my professor kick a student out from the class because of poor sportsmanship and he wanted to fight everyone, even professor lol. Something was going on with that person and he's membership just got provoked.

Carlos Cabrera make your own decision. If you are under 60 you are probably fine. The fatality rate for people under 55 is almost zero. This is simply a viral pneumonia, it’s NOT that big of a deal.

Video critique for Rusty. I found it quite distracting when the music was playing at the same time Ryan was talking. I'm watching on my phone, and I had to turn up my volume close to max to hear, and the music made it even harder to hear him talk.

It might be for your school. It’s not for our campuses.

It's okay to be with people you enjoy being with. Anyone that tries to make you feel bad about that is projecting their own insecurities on you.

Qliques are also a red flag for a toxic invirement.
