If the ball is to your right, swing the Wii remote as if you’re hitting the ball from the right side and vice versa. if you tilt the Wii remote with the a button down, it’ll slice the ball with a top spin and it’ll go quick, but if you hit it with the a button up and swing up, it’ll loft the ball
Well, there’s also like how hi up the ball is when you hit it and where it is positioned when you hit it, so that you can make the ball go in the place you want it to be.

In tennis your preparation for the swing is being read which is why its showing the wrong input and acting like the ball is going right through it. Try using wrist movements that are as short and concise as possible (then when it gets faster you'll be able to respond and not get overwhelmed too)(If that doesn't work experiment with the left handed settings too).
