This video really emphasizes how wacky the riddler is conceptually is as a villain and makes me sort of appreciate how the movie riddler uses “classic” riddles for information rather than clues or riddles simply for the sake of having riddles

It's why the Arkham games just have him with these easy puzzles and hand-wave it as "Oh, he's losing his edge because he's going increasingly crazy from being beaten all the time."
I think the riddler is a real cool character concept and can work in a darker setting but all of that hinges on actually writing new unique and relevant riddles to the situation. Which rarely happens. Edit: I watched the new Batman movie and the Riddler was good idve preferred more showmanship but that may just be me
The volume five of Snyder's run makes an interesting use of his character. The final battle of the comic for instance is fought against time, while any of the above average difficulty riddles he gives Batman need to be solved before time's up or thousands will die. Even if Batman solves them all, it would technically be impossible to solve them all unless he's a supercomputer, and even then he's risking death at every step. The actual solution is pretty damn interesting.
This is funny as hell, but I mainly just appreciate that this is an unquestionably good guy Batman who actually is clearly more sane than the villains that keep projecting onto him than the overdone narrative that they're not so different.
OK, I hear you. Counterpoint. He's still dressed as a flying mouse, and he's still beating up criminals. Being a good guy and being mentally unstable are not mutually exclusive.
This video kind of showcases the struggle of writing the Riddler in a modern setting, which is probably why the character seems avoided and seldom used in any real extent in newer movies. He became almost a joke character, which contrasted greatly with the menace he used to inspire. This is why I love "The Batman" from 2022, and the fact that they not only used the Riddler, but made him the primary villain. They altered him to better fit a modern world, and made his puzzles and riddles more obscure, or added elements to them that made simply looking up the answer much harder or impossible altogether. Not everyone liked the new look and direction, but I personally loved it, and feel that this depiction of the character brought him back so to speak, a made him more relevant for a modern setting.
Batman has made his own shark repellent, but has he even made a crocodile repellent solely to deal with Killer crock? Batman should also make some Bat-Herbicides to defeat poison Ivey.

I remember seeing a post on Tumblr the other day talking about how Spider-Man and Batman’s foes wouldn’t last ten minutes if Spidey and Batman switched rogues galleries with a favorite part of the post being that Spider-Man would tell the Riddler he likes Knock-Knock jokes better while Green Goblin is getting his ass whooped by the Bat-Family.
Yeah, like how if Spider-Man ended up fighting Joker we’d literally just get the Terry scene from the Batman Beyond movie where Peter just bullies and laughs at him and the Joker doesn’t like it.

In Batman's defense, this is what Riddler deserves after having each and everyone of us go through tedious guidelines on the internet to find the locations of all the Riddler trophies in Arkham.
The guides needed to be created by someone. Basically at least a single person found them without any guides, and then created guides for everybody else. (Or maybe they just looked at the game code idk) they deserve to beat riddler the most.

Writing intelligent characters can be difficult. Inventors and investigators are easy enough. Just throw in some techno jargon, plot device, or psychological bs to solve the issue. Usually these feats can be boiled down to the character just being smart and that's it. Villains like the Riddler, however, have a theme that can't be ignored. You can't have a riddle theme villain not make genuinely unique and difficult riddles.

Someone asked one of the Batman comics writers why Riddler doesn't show up more often, and his response was basically "you try writing 20 riddles for a comic arc."
Yeah, and props to anyone that at least tries to make any iteration of the Riddler live up to his name and actually come up with genuinely unique and difficult riddles one can't just look up online. Whether they fail or not is a different matter altogether but at least if the intent is there, that's a good start 😛

God, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.
This video kind of showcases the struggle of writing the Riddler in a modern setting, which is probably why the character seems avoided and seldom used in any real extent in newer movies. He became almost a joke character, which contrasted greatly with the menace he used to inspire.
This is why I love "The Batman" from 2022, and the fact that they not only used the Riddler, but made him the primary villain. They altered him to better fit a modern world, and made his puzzles and riddles more obscure, or added elements to them that made simply looking up the answer much harder or impossible altogether.
Not everyone liked the new look and direction, but I personally loved it, and feel that this depiction of the character brought him back so to speak, a made him more relevant for a modern setting.
Part of the reason Riddler isn't used much is mostly because it's really hard coming up with riddles.

I remember seeing a post on Tumblr the other day talking about how Spider-Man and Batman’s foes wouldn’t last ten minutes if Spidey and Batman switched rogues galleries with a favorite part of the post being that Spider-Man would tell the Riddler he likes Knock-Knock jokes better while Green Goblin is getting his ass whooped by the Bat-Family.
The funny part is their rogue galleries are really similar too
Yeah, like how if Spider-Man ended up fighting Joker we’d literally just get the Terry scene from the Batman Beyond movie where Peter just bullies and laughs at him and the Joker doesn’t like it.

In Batman's defense, this is what Riddler deserves after having each and everyone of us go through tedious guidelines on the internet to find the locations of all the Riddler trophies in Arkham.
The guides needed to be created by someone.
Basically at least a single person found them without any guides, and then created guides for everybody else. (Or maybe they just looked at the game code idk) they deserve to beat riddler the most.

I want to know who thought it was a good idea to give the worlds greatest detective a villan who throws fucking kiddy riddles at him. Its like a spider-man villan that puts a bomb at the end of a parkour course and says "HA HA BET YOU CAN'T GET THROUGH THIS, SHPIDAH MAN"
Writing intelligent characters can be difficult. Inventors and investigators are easy enough. Just throw in some techno jargon, plot device, or psychological bs to solve the issue. Usually these feats can be boiled down to the character just being smart and that's it. Villains like the Riddler, however, have a theme that can't be ignored. You can't have a riddle theme villain not make genuinely unique and difficult riddles.
That's why they pretty much turned Riddler into Jigsaw.

Someone asked one of the Batman comics writers why Riddler doesn't show up more often, and his response was basically "you try writing 20 riddles for a comic arc."
Yeah, and props to anyone that at least tries to make any iteration of the Riddler live up to his name and actually come up with genuinely unique and difficult riddles one can't just look up online. Whether they fail or not is a different matter altogether but at least if the intent is there, that's a good start 😛
