two additional tips, 1) to 'splay' the legs, esp. with tripods that have spreaders, or other gear restricting or blocking splay, use a technique one could term a 'one foot landing': you place the NON rubberised leg in front of you, grasping the other two rubber grips on the legs, lay that leg down, then (holding the other legs up 1-2" off the ground), step back, and pull each hand apart, rest the other legs on the ground, DONE all splayed quick. [helpful for larger tripods, eg: Manfrotto 074/058, or LF/ studio tripods, like Ries A200/J200 where they are wooden legs, or are Heavy]; 2) when attaching cameras, use a 10 Cent coin, to tension the screw, as it's slot is too thick for screwdrivers, OR an Allen key "wallet", the one like a flick knife, this gets things tight, as you don't want the camera turning when on a tripod, or have a lot of gear out front, unbalancing the CG of the rig.

I always though the plate is attached parallel to the body of the camera rather than being perpendicular to it. Does it actually matter which orientation the plate is relative to the camera body?
