ALL ALONE IN ANGKOR WAT (Caught in Cambodia as The World Shut Down)

- In our last travel vlog before the world shut down, we explored one of the most famous sites in the world located in Siem Reap, Cambodia - Angkor Wat!
Angkor Archaeological Park is the largest religious monument in the world! In a typical year, this temple complex welcomes 2.6 million visitors. But, while we were there, the pandemic sent the tourist numbers crashing by 99% and we had the entire temple complex almost entirely to ourselves.
We had so many plans to explore Cambodia. However, our actual visit was quite different. In mid-March of 2020, the world was changing for good, and in our last vlog of its kind, we visited the ancient site of Angkor Wat in a way few people ever can - almost empty!
Climbing through the temples surrounded by the forest and monkeys with almost nobody around made us feel like we were the first people exploring this ancient temple once built by the powerful Khmer empire. While the experience was amazing, we couldn’t help but feel sad thinking about how the severe drop in tourists was devastating the local’s livelihood, not just in Siem Reap but around the World.
During our time at the Angkor Wat temple complex, we visited three of the most famous temples in Cambodia: Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, and Ta Prohm (aka the Tomb Raider temple). You’ll have to watch to find out which one was each of our favorites!
Just after our time in Siem Reap, Cambodia we began our journey back home for what we thought would be a few months of quarantine. Instead, as everyone on Earth knows, it's a year later and we’re just beginning to get going again with travel…

You guys were insanely lucky to see Angkor like that. I totally get the bitter-sweetness, but the last time Angkor was that empty was 20 years ago+, before tourism really took off. I ended up working in SR for 12 years and still feel enormous love for the country and its people. Super video. Really enjoyed it.

I was there in 2018 ...with my wife and son... Stay in luxurious hotel ( for the comfort of my wife and kid... I dragged them here to Cambodia ) ... My wife is not a big fan of ancient temple site or relics of those type..... but Angkor Wat , Angkor Thom , Bayon changed everything.... The statue , the cravings.....the history.... We just love it.... and my son loved the tuk tuk ride... LOL .... Darn... i miss travelling...

Ahhh memories! What a nice visit you had! We visited in 2006, and to get that famous shot of the entangled tree roots, we waited 30 minutes -- 30 minutes!!! -- to get a break between the massive tour groups stopping there. And then we had 2 seconds to snap a pic real fast without people in it. On the flip side, we once visited the Taj Mahal on a voting day and it looked like Angkor Wat here, very few people here. Highly recommend visiting the Taj on a voting day!

Great video... We visited Angkor wat in December 2019, the last year of freedom. It was full of people, which is how it was supposed to be. We did it by cycling and it was an unforgettable experience. How I wish 2020 was just a nightmare and I could wake up one day without this heavyweight of a virus and crazy rules.

i wanted to know how you get/license the music used in the videos, and what camera you use?
Thank you! We use Epidemic Sound for all of our music, highly recommend. For this video we were filming on a Nikon D3300 DSLR. That was the camera we had when we started traveling. Now we film on a Sony a7siii which has been really fun to learn.
@@KeepGoingPlaces That is THE vlog camera. Any plans to upload in 4k50/60fps in future with that beast (4k 120 4:2:2 10bit capability) of a camera? also 12800 iso in slog3 is just magical at night... better than what eye can see without noise

That is so sad at the temples are the lifeblood of Siem Reap, i had an amazing morning there in Nov 2019 yes it was busy but had an amazing guide I can't wait to go back as the people are so nice, its a world away from where i live and so different., the golf courses are brilliant.

My fave temple was also the Bayon temple, but wished there were a little less people when I visited.

I saw three sunrises and three sunsets but I’m a nerd for ruins and rented a motorbike to self tour. You’re totally right though you have to do you in your life. I’ve spent 17 months in India and never seen the Taj Mahal!

Now, the Angkor Wat's beauty has been added with some beautiful flower gardens right in front of the main entrance (Western gate), new infrastructures ( sidewalks, souvenir market, parking, roads,...). This would provide you totally new perspectives on the beauty of Angkor Wat in your next visit.

would have been amazing to see it uncrowded. To each their own of course, but to me 1 day does not go close to doing the temples justice, doing only half day almost sacrilege. My 1st visit of 4 days I was out before dawn each day and stayed out exploring until sunset all 4 days. 2nd visit also 4 days, did same except for spending 2 to 3 hrs in middle of each day back in town. Ideally if I get the chance again, will go for longer than 4 days

Dear little American baby’s they think they’ve been to Angkor by spending 4 hours and seeing 3 of the 25 major temples , gates and terraces , and of course being baby’s they were concerned about the dust riding in a Tuk tuk. I’ve been to Angkor 31 times , ridden 100’s of times in tuk tuks and never once experienced dust , just the wonderful Air-con as we whip along in the open Tuk tuk.
You come all this way, do it properly.
Buy a 3 day ticket so you can see so much more, every temple is unique, so many more experiences and memories.
