Solomon Burke was my favourite soul singer , still got L.P. Records of him. From around the late 60sWas so exited to see him when he came to London. He voice was fantastic.
Pretty much everything on the soundtrack pulls up movie memories. My big one is Hungry Eyes, though Time of My Life is the main song. So much great music! A react to the video of Time of My Life/the final dance would be so much fun!
Please react to -1.The Clovers: Love Potion Number 9 -2.The Coasters: Poison Ivy -3.Bobby Lewis: Tossing and Turning -4.Lloyd Price: Stagger Lee -5.Jody Reynolds: Endless Sleep -6.Ray Peterson: Tell Laura I Love Her -7.? and the Mysterians: 96 Tears -Thanks!!!
Y’all have got to hear “Everybody needs somebody to love.” He has so many great songs. You should also check out Wilson Pickett “In the midnight hour”.
You should hear Sir Tom Jones' impromptu solo rendition of "Cry To Me" on The Voice UK! It'll blow you away. The shading in his voice and his expert timing is perfect for this kind of soulful song. He also sang "Cry To Me" with one of the contestants another year on the show. It's one of the songs he's incorporated into his tours. Tom can take me to church any time! And since you mentioned Little Richard, you also should hear Tom in a duet with Little Richard on "This Is Tom Jones" TV show back in 1969.
Five songs from the 50s: "Goody Goody" by Frankie Lymon; "At the Hop" by Danny and the Juniors; by "Little Bitty Pretty One" by Thurston Harris; "Maybellene" by Chuck Berry; "Rockin' Robin" by Bobby Day. An instrumental that revels in sax playing is "Jam Up" by Tommy Ridgley.
I love "Little Bitty Pretty One," and "Maybellene" itself is a total killer. I remember "Rockin' Robin" from the Jackson five version. I am unfamiliar with "Jam Up, " unless it was the the basis of "Jam Up, and Jelly Tight."
Great choice. One of the best soul singers of the 60s, for sure. Check out "Got To Get You Off My MInd", "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love", and "If You Need Me". Great rabbit hole to dive into! In his day, he was compared to legends like Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, and even James Brown.
This song always reminds me of Dirty Dancing! I love it and I love y'all too! Always enjoy watching Amber close her eyes and get into the songs! You've got some cutie pie kids too❤
"Cry to me" is my all time favorite Solomon Burke's song. He sounds like a minister, because he is one. Like Al Green, he became a Minister and stopped singing secular music!
Oh heck yes! "Little Bitty Pretty One" by Thurston Harris, "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire" by The Ink Spots, "Sh-boom" by the Chords, "Mr. Sandman" by the Chordettes, or "Come Softly To Me" by The Fleetwoods would all be amazing choices to get you back into the oldies!
I never heard of Solomon Burke until this song was in "Dirty Dancing". I scooped up a greatest hits album as soon as I could. I would like to see you guys react to "That's How I Got to Memphis". He recorded all the way up to the early 2000's.
This one was before my time, but like many I was introduced to this song in the Dirty Dancing movie and I absolutely love it. That film also introduced me to The Contours, The Four Seasons, and The Five Satins.
Thank you for this brings back such wonderful memories of my childhood dad grab Ma dancing to the song the pure love and joy that they had for each other in our lives together. Simply magical times got me in tears missing him but don’t feel bad it’s all good memories and I thank you for that. Love joy and peace to you and yours
I think this song cadence qualifies as - The "Carolina Shag" is said to have been born along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean near Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The basic step for this upbeat, quick and smooth dance is a six-count, eight-step pattern danced in a slot. Look the dance style called "shag"
Solomon was a preacher who started singing professionally in 1955 and was one of the best rhythym and blues artists of all time. Sadly Solomon passed in 2010, he is sadly missed. Tom Jones sings Cry To Me in his stage shows and did a version on The Voice UK. As for similar artists James Carr singing Dark End Of The Street is one for you to listen to.
Oldies I'd like to hear: Howlin'Wolf "Smokestack LIghtnin'" would be a good intro to the man who learned from both Charlie Patton AND Robert Johnson, in person I might add. But ANYTHING from him is a treat. The same goes for Muddy Waters. Some of his best known songs are "Rollin' and Tumblin'", "Hoochie Coochie Man", and "Mannish Boy."
Absolutely positively a great song glad you guys got to it. You also must react to Aaron Neville his song Tell it like it is. These two songs are 60s classics!!!!
The real thing! Millie and I were dancing around the living room. Jay I was doing that sorta jazz hand thing, and look up, and there you are joining in, lol! I don't think you guys have ever reacted to a seminal band of the 60's called the Young Rascals, and then just the Rascals. "Good Loving" will knock yer socks off! Or Gene Pitney, "I'm Gonna Be Strong". Thanks for the reaction!
It would be cool if you two reacted to a great falsetto group from the 70''s called The Stylistics They had a string of hits in the early 70's, but one of their most beloved songs is "Betcha By Golly Wow" , an innocent love song that captures the imagination and executed perfectly by The Stylistics and lead singer Russel Thompkins. I hope you'll consider this one Amber and Jordan.
Solomon Burke will take you to church without you leaving home. This is the kind of 'gospel-styled' soul that was prevalent from the 50's, especially the 60's, even through the 80's, that is almost gone today. Yes, it was present in the performances of Little Richard, early Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and countless others. The Reverend Solomon Burke was, indeed, a preacher and a giant among soul singers. Criminally underrated and overlooked toward the beginning of his career, he did get some recognition later on before his death in 2010. This song was recorded very late in 1961. It's a very honest recording, done all at once. In other words, set up some mics, turn on the tape machine and go!! It was, thankfully, included in the Dirty Dancing soundtrack in 1987 which gave it, and Mr. Burke's career, a well deserved boost.
Coming back to your Dutch bands. (shocking blue) Solomon Burke was going on tour and making an album with Dutch band "De Dijk". Bud sadly on the plane to the Netherlands he died.
Marc Broussard does a great job of giving tribute to Solomon on this song. There is a guy named Grayson Hughes who has that New Orleans sound that would be great to listen to, especially Talk It Over In Bed.
“Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” was his classic that was covered by both The Rolling Stones and The Blues Brothers, but no one does it like the original.
I love this song so much. I bought it in 1962 and Atlantic records reigned supreme over the r & B stations. Driffers. Ben E. King, Percy Sledge just beore
Later in his career, he did some extraordinary country influenced songs, including the great "That's How I Got to Memphis ". Well worth checking out!!!
I love soul, an I absolutely love this an all his songs, especially Cry to me. I'm a older 73yrs old. Women, an love dancing to all his songs. Everyone has resung this song. Terrific. My kind of music. Check out other of his songs. Surely you'll know who this man is. Your about right on the time frame. I'm always listening an dancing to these songs. The 60s are great.
Back in 2011 I was in this dance class and this is the song we ballroom dance to and before that I've never heard of this song now it's my favorite song
There Are Probably At Least A Thousand Videos Out There Of People From 6 To 60 Dancing To This Song & I Would Definitely Suggest Watching Some Of Them.
Jay and Amber, you said if we wanted to hear some “oldies”, here’s one for you......Cab Calloway singing “Jumpin’ Jive” with the Nicolas Brothers tap dancing (1943). If you like dancing, then you’ll be surprised at how nimble they are with their footwork! Orchestra is included.
My first time hearing the bluesy Solomon Burke, loved his voice and the song. Reminded me of my man Jimmy, if you want some more great Rock n Blues, I have four words for you all, Jimmy Barnes, Stone Cold.
This is my favorite Solomon Burke song!!! I don't remember when it was first released in 1962. The first time I remember hearing it was in the movie " The Man from U.N.C.L.E. a 2015 spy film" I don't think he got the recognition he deserves. A very soulful singer!
One of my fave song if all time . Other great voices : Cry Cry Baby by Garnet Mimms ( which Janis Joplin did a cover of), Talk To Me Talk To Me by Little Willie John, Hey There Lonely Boy by Eddie Holman, Danny Boy by Jackie Wilson, You Made Me Feel Brand New by The Stylistics.
Can't hear this song without picturing Baby and Johnny. Loved the movie, absolutely LOVE the song.
Ikr! Loved Dirty dancing 💃
i was thinking the same thing. there's also a scene in the man from u.n.c.l.e. movie where alicia vikander dances to this song.

Great soundtrack!!
Solomon Burke was my favourite soul singer , still got L.P. Records of him. From around the late 60sWas so exited to see him when he came to London. He voice was fantastic.

Same 😊
I can’t listen to this song without thinking about Patrick Swayze 🥰😍

Yes! Stagger Lee!
Now I gotta watch Dirty Dancing again for the1,000th time. Can't separate this awesome song from that movie. 😉
That’s how I feel about this song and she’s like the wind! Sending love to you and yours from Orlando Florida
Y’all have got to hear “Everybody needs somebody to love.” He has so many great songs. You should also check out Wilson Pickett “In the midnight hour”.

And since you mentioned Little Richard, you also should hear Tom in a duet with Little Richard on "This Is Tom Jones" TV show back in 1969.
Also check out the duet of Sir Tom Jones & Bethzienna Williams. And try Precious Wilson of Eruption in the early 1980s.
Oh I love Solomon Burke. I actually had this one on my list to suggest to somebody. Lol You could try Cry baby by Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters.
Enjoy you guys and your reactions! A great oldie you may enjoy is "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" by The Platters. Please keep the great reactions coming!
Great suggestions
Love Rockin Robin!
I love "Little Bitty Pretty One," and "Maybellene" itself is a total killer. I remember "Rockin' Robin" from the Jackson five version. I am unfamiliar with "Jam Up, " unless it was the the basis of "Jam Up, and Jelly Tight."

I'm excited for this react!!! Dirty Dancing brought me here! XD
Solomon Burke one of the greats.
"Cry to me" is my all time favorite Solomon Burke's song. He sounds like a minister, because he is one. Like Al Green, he became a Minister and stopped singing secular music!
He was raised a minister, started preaching full time as a child.
Also a licenced mortician that owned a chain of funeral homes. A Man of many talents.
Also a licenced embalmer and mortician ! One talented dude.
I thank Dirty Dancing and my parents for introducing me to this kind of music!
Yes!!!
I say the same
I never heard of Solomon Burke until this song was in "Dirty Dancing". I scooped up a greatest hits album as soon as I could.
I would like to see you guys react to "That's How I Got to Memphis". He recorded all the way up to the early 2000's.
Same for me 👍

that's where I recognize it from!!
This one was before my time, but like many I was introduced to this song in the Dirty Dancing movie and I absolutely love it. That film also introduced me to The Contours, The Four Seasons, and The Five Satins.
Solomon Burke, like many early soul artist came from the church which is why there's the church feel. He was actually a preacher before he passed.
soloman burke had an amazing voice! him and jackie wilson could move through the vocal scales with so easy love the reaction. ; )
This is one of the hardest driving, nastiest early soul songs .... so glad to hear Mr. Burke belt it out again !
Amber ,you are more right than you know. Solomon Burke was a preacher in addition to a singer.
PREACH Pastor Burke!🎙🎶✝️😁
And an undertaker
This always transports me to the sexiest dirty dancing scene…. 🎶🎶🎶
Another great song 🎶 🎵 from Dirty Dancing!
Solomon was a preacher
He was a founding father of soul and RnB
He had a couple great albums in the early 2000s too
Even a duet with Dolly Parton
I was gonna say - his 2008 "Don't Give Up On Me" is one of my favourite albums ever. He kept making great music late in life. RIP to a legend.
There IS NO WAY anyone can stay idol hearing this....one of my favorite songs of all time RIGHT HERE ‼️‼️👏👏👏❣️❤️
I think this song cadence qualifies as - The "Carolina Shag" is said to have been born along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean near Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The basic step for this upbeat, quick and smooth dance is a six-count, eight-step pattern danced in a slot. Look the dance style called "shag"
He does have soul and has a good sound
Thank you! This song was used in the movie "Dirty Dancing". Such a great voice!
Solomon was a preacher who started singing professionally in 1955 and was one of the best rhythym and blues artists of all time. Sadly Solomon passed in 2010, he is sadly missed.
Tom Jones sings Cry To Me in his stage shows and did a version on The Voice UK.

More of this Doo Wop please. 50's and 60's are the best ❤✌🇨🇦
Aww that saucy moment in Dirty Dancing 😍!
This song just reminded me of another artist to check out - Marc Broussard. He did a cover of this song and I think Mr. Burke would like his cover.
This song was on the movie Dirty Dancing
I have requested AARON NEVILLE several times. I ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ his voice!! 👍🏻😃👍🏻

Rest in peace the great Solomon Burke. This song is unmatchable as far as soul music at its best.
This Soul Classic Was A Huge Hit When Released,, King Floyd "Groove Me"

I love this song. I know it best from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. It’s an awesome collection of songs….it’s 2 parts , so-a lot to love.
Oooh, now you're getting to the good stuff.
One of my favorite R&B songs of all time. Kudos to whoever recommended it.
Stay In My Corner - The Dells.
In The Rain 🌧- The Dramatics
Trying to Make a Fool of Me- the Delfonics
The song itself refers musically to his hit, "Spanish Harlem".
One of the best songs ever! O. C Smith - Little Green Apples.
One of my favorite singers.
@@pattiturner0425 indeed!
This song was in Dirty Dancing..fab movie...great song....
When I think about “old Soul” music, it always starts with Sam Cooke. So many great songs.

As a person who was a teen in the 80s, thank you for calling the 50s the oldies. 😊

There Are Probably At Least A Thousand Videos Out There Of People From 6 To 60 Dancing To This Song & I Would Definitely Suggest Watching Some Of Them.
One of the best songs ever written. Solomon kills it. Gives you that vibe if you get my meaning. It was in the movie Dirty Dancing. Legendary!

"96 Tears"..A MUST HEAR Classic.

A Grand classic. Excellent request. Thank you.
Try The Drifters. Save The Last Dance For Me and There Goes My Baby.
This is my favorite Solomon Burke song!!! I don't remember when it was first released in 1962. The first time I remember hearing it was in the movie " The Man from U.N.C.L.E. a 2015 spy film"
I don't think he got the recognition he deserves. A very soulful singer!

Del Shannon “Runaway” is a good oldie.
First time hearing this or of him!!! Like his voice and the way he conveys what he is saying!!! Thanks!
