  • John from www.okraw.com/ shares the specific foods he cooks as a raw vegan and how he heat processes them for better health.
In this episode, you will learn about John's journey as a raw vegan and his recent incorporation of heat-processed foods into his diet. John, who has been a raw vegan since 1995, shares his definition of being a raw vegan, which focuses on excluding animal products and primarily consuming raw foods. However, he has found benefits in adding heat-processed foods, which he prefers to call "heat-processed" instead of "cooked." He exclusively uses an Instant Pot for this purpose, avoiding high-heat cooking methods that can produce harmful carcinogens and toxins, while also significantly diminishing the health benefits of foods.
John goes into detail about the specific foods he heat processes and his methods for doing so. He emphasizes the importance of using water-based cooking techniques, such as steaming, to maintain the nutritional integrity of the foods. Some of the foods he discusses include purple sweet potatoes, various grains like einkorn and millet, beans, and mushrooms. He explains that while some of these foods can be eaten raw, heat processing them can provide additional health benefits. John also highlights the importance of a diverse diet and how incorporating heat-processed foods can help achieve this.
Furthermore, John addresses the controversy surrounding his choice to eat heat-processed foods while maintaining a raw vegan identity. He argues that his approach aligns with his definition of veganism, which prioritizes practicality and nutritional benefits. He encourages viewers to consider adopting the best cooking methods if a person chooses to cook their food to improve nutrient intake, and fiber and reduce dietary restrictions. By sharing his methods and the benefits he has experienced, John aims to inspire others to explore a balanced approach to raw veganism that includes the advantages of heat-processed foods.

I think people today would define your diet as "high raw vegan". 😊 Things are changing... we are a bit "more experienced" in our age (but not old!). Not at all! 😅
It doesn't matter if you eat "fully raw" or "high raw" vegan, we like you as you are! 😊

You pretty much switched to whole food vegan, which is great! I eat that way as well, low fat, only steaming, or oven cooked, or gently steamed with no oils just water and herbs and spices. 👍💚

While I do advocate for a whole food plant based diet, I believe my diet is a raw vegan diet, IMO on a whole foods plant based diet there is no specific percentage of RAW foods are eaten, or how they are heated. Furthermore a person can eat a very grain based diet and call them self whole food plant based. I specifically eat 80%-90% raw, and eat mostly vegetables and fruits as the base of my diet. I also only heat process my foods with the instant pot and only heat process select foods as I share in this episode. I advocate people on a whole food plant based diet increase their RAW fruit and vegetable consumption, pay attention to the specific foods they choose to eat, and heat the foods in the best ways possible to avoid creating toxins and maximizing food value.

I really appreciate this. You may want to delve into whether people beginning fully raw for their health should wait to heat process for a year or two or not. I noticed when I first when raw in 2017, I was drawn to mostly fruit. After I regained health, my body started asking for more greens and fats.

AWESOME live John, although I missed it, but totally enjoying the replay today on my sunday funday!😁Since you recommend we eat more purple veggies,I know you're familiar with prickly pear fruit, and maybe the pitaya(not to confuse it with the pithaya=dragon fruit), have you tried the Myrtillo Cactus berries? So good, just as good as blueberries, I've been incorporating them in my overnight oats, and besides adding their unique flavor, they tint the oats from a deep purple to a light red (depending how many you add to the oats). Thank you for sharing more of your wisdom and knowledge, 👍and greetings👋from Querétaro, Mexico.🤠

Awesome content John as always!❤ I have also added some lightly heat processed plant based foods to my raw diet such as tempeh, natto, tofu I make myself, or for instance purple potatoes and broccoli - regarding artichokes, I eat them raw just as I tried them in South of France, dipped in extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper, delicious!

Hi John! Love your channel! You’re bringing a lot of new info about dehydrators and I have a question. I’m trying to help family members transition into a high raw diet and we were wondering your opinion about what would be the healthiest way to create pizza and wrap crusts.. we only use Whole Foods but is it best to dehydrate them or bake them at lower temperature. Thanks a lot! 😊

    • @okraw
      @okraw  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

there are pros and cons of each. If making pizza, I would use my crusts: th-cam.com/video/jetKmOcljoI/w-d-xo.html and then most all ingredients are raw: th-cam.com/video/9haFtOOaGIM/w-d-xo.html with few exceptions
If making wraps, I would make lissa wraps: th-cam.com/video/lUMqQQCvNgw/w-d-xo.html
No need to cook these items.

Also you seem to be too focused on what you are eating and you pay too little attention to the stress factor. You are way too worried about eating too many things, in order to get all the nutrients. Well, the stress can dictate how much you can actually absorb from those nutrients.
It is well known that the stress affects your eating apetite. Whenever you feel a strong desire to eat cooked food or sometimes even some raw foods, that's simply because of the stress.
Also the stress affects emotional balance, sleeping, and pretty much every single cell of your body can be affected by stress.
The health problems originate in the human's mind. The mind controls the soul and the soul controls the physical body, through the endocrine glands. In other words, the mind creates the stress (bad emotions), then the stress destroys the physical body, by blocking it's capacity to extract the nutrients from food.
The less stress you have, the more simple your diet will become, simply because you don't feel like eating a great variety of things, and that's because your body will absorb everything it needs even from the few things you are eating
