P.S. there is another event with the fire bomb where you get the quest to scout out a mantis(?) camp. Normally when you arrive you’re forced to back out but if you have the fire bomb you get a good bit off loot and a crew member.
Speaking of fire, some of my most fun moments is fire beam + rock crewmen + teleporter. I know the B variant has the fire bomb but I swap it out for the fire beam every time. Nothing beats being able to set half their ship + medbay on fire, then after fighting them to get them low hp, teleporting back to your ship to watch them burn.
My favourite tactic in the entire game is doing boarding with Rock B. Imagine fighting two 150HP enemies in a room that's burning. Heavily recommended.

Hey, enjoying your FTL content! For the Shivan(my favourite rockmen ship), one very silly way to be able to vent out your oxygen is to purposefully leave a hull breach in your ship, systemless room preferably. You’ll still need to pay for the doors to have control of it however, so it’s incredibly niche at best.
As for firebombing your own ship, the only best case scenario I can think of is to sow chaos to enemies during enemy teleporter breach events where ship combat and maintaining systems isn’t a high priority issue, even then it’s likely better to just punch them to death.

Rock and Zoltan ships have the coolest names. It's hard to beat Tectite or Noether. Coolest physicist. Coolest name. Symmetry, baby!
there are tectites even cooler then the ones you showed. Button tectites or australites, formed from the stable decent of molten rock, were used to design the Apollo re-entry module.

I think the rock ships work best if you get a teleporter. You start with a lot of rocks and weapons that cause fires. It's a great synergy, only teleporter not included :(. If you can sell the hull missile and rock plating and pick up a teleporter with the rock A, you have a good run going. You just really need to find a store with teleporter.
B&C are even better. Just watch out! I found out that your rocks are not harmed by the fires your bombs set, BUT they are harmed by the bombs themselves. So teleporting two rocks in and then fire bombing the guys who come fight them is dangerous. Hilarious, but dangerous.
Their extra health may be good for getting around that, in a pinch. Setting fire to any medbay would give your rocks a great advantage while boarding! I may have to try this strategy out sometime soon

I once had Rock B with teleporter. Nothing beats teleporting 2 Rockmen and a firebomb into their weapons. They have to get through 300 HP before they can stop the fire burning their weapons and their faces.

Freespace is a great space fighter game. 2 is definitely better though. I have some very fond memories of the game. Freelancer, considered one of the best open world space sim games (especially for its time), took heavy inspiration from it.
The Descent series is also really good (if I remember right the only reason Interplay put Descent into Freespace 1's title was to sell more copies, made by the same devs though). And I think you can get Descent 1 and 2 on abandonware sites for free these days, can't remember for sure though. And there's mods for QoL and widescreen and HD and all that.
Perhaps I’ll have to look into it after finishing FTL! We shall see…
@@SamsSideshow Nvm, must be mistaking them for some other games I found for free... Or remembering that GOG has them DRM free so sometimes I share copies with friends, lol.
Still, if you want head spinning retro sci fi action... They're all pretty fun games.
