I also found the repetitiveness funny😆. It’s one of those books you read once or twice and learn stuff from it. It would be interesting to see what you found crazy… or even a summary from your book club without mentioning whose summary you’re giving.

Agreed! It’s a timeless book but one where your perspective might change from the time period you read it from in your life. I think that’s what makes it really special! Haha…. that’s a good idea, hopefully my club members actually finish the book 😂

So, I can understand people not relating to Holden in this book, but I think the criticism a lot of readers give this book with Holden coming off as whiny and annoying really shows sort of the hypocrisy and social privelege some of have. This is a character who is spiralling with mental health problems and grieving. This is a very raw portayal of not angst but anger and being lost. Yet, people just say he complains. The narration has a lot of accountability and isn't pretending to be virtuous. Feeling loneliness and grief and depression (when he hears people laughing on the sidewalk half a mile away and it depresses him). This is relatable. And so i find it funny that a strong voice who is going through existential problems isn't more sympathetic with some people. I personally think that people want to hate Holden because thet view him as a priveleged male. If you look at ither reviewers, this cones up a bunch. But yeah, criticizing society and dealing with loneliness and procrastinating incoming bad news isn't just a kid thing. The socal privilege thing I mentioned earlier is because this book is riddled with the theme of loneliness and death. I think people who have always had a good support structure would label him as annoying but for me the voice is effective. Anyways, to each their own, but it's definitely a book I think lingers with those that may veer on the negative side. Not to say that's healthy, but it is powerful and authentic.

I agree that you have to be in a certain headspace to read it. I read this book in my 20s when I was suffering from depression and could see Holden's need for company and grief for his brother. I still remember how he felt he was becoming (invisible? don't exactly remember) when he was crossing the street near the end because I felt the same way. And I feel people who call this book a red flag don't really understand it. One needs to look past Holden's phoniness and see that he needed help. And let's not forget, the book was published after the second world war, so it's really a very sad book.

I'm glad you were able to connect with Holden during a tough time in your life. There's a reason why it's an appraised novel - it was definitely an impressive book for its time. For me, the beauty of the book is that so many different people can feel differently about it!
