They consider him a legend, which he is, but sadly a lot of people refuse to call him this just because he faced some problems in the later stages of his career. I agree with the part where you said someone wanted to see him fail, but I suspect that someone (or multiple people even) were in the football world and not the media. The media seemed to adore him too; he was goodlooking, charismatic, very talented and humble from the heart not just for PR.
