  • Here, I attempt to articulate my current feelings towards Sunderland's 'model' which has come under scrutiny recently. Also, thank you to everyone who has shown support for me in what has been a very hard time recently with my uncle's passing & funeral. It's so appreciated. Videos will start to come back in the near future.

    I agree with the model but it has to be seen to be progressing us which at the moment doesn't look to be the case. Recruitment as ever is key & that failed for the most part last summer. Still no centre forward !! Great to see you back.

    Good video Michael and I hope you give us the odd post match analysis as your summaries are always excellent.
    The challenge will be to find the right fit between players and coach I think. It seemed we had it for a while with Mowbray and the youngsters, but that identity seems to have slipped away.
    Let’s see the odd “blue chip” investment in amongst the speculative ones and with the right coaching appointment maybe we can decide who we are and what we need to do to get to the next level. At this stage, unfortunately, there seems to be no evidence of strategy or leadership and we are just about clinging on to the wreckage!

      My opinion may change if we mess up this summer but as of right now, think many have forgotten how this is supposed to work. But once big fees are brought in, then we better spent accordingly. If not, then every bit of criticism coming their way is justified.

    Welcome back Michael. Hope you are healing well.
    Couple of points:
    a) It makes good business sense to spend in the bounds of our income. In that case though, there is no need for a billionaire owner. I had hoped he would have "indulged" much more with the ambition of getting his money back in the Premiere league.
    b) The income we have is not just from player sales, but from having the biggest fan base in the Championship + shirt sales + concerts etc.
    c) Why are we being outpunched by smaller clubs like Ipswich? Ipswich have achieved because of their ambitious transfer policies.
    d) You're right - this summer is huge.

    • @michaelbowers541
      @michaelbowers541  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good points. Agree with a, b & d. As for point c, I'd argue aside Ipswich is the exception rather than the rule. I don't know for sure but I'd not be surprised if there's not many if any other examples of what they're doing without serious consequences down the line. What they're doing now may set them back, regardless of potential investment, for a while because of FFP. But thanks for the good wishes, I'm getting better.

    First time post on your channel mate and just have to say that you make total sense reviewing the model along with the outgoings and incomings from SAFC over this period. I have believed in the model and want it to work for the long run. Finances are paramount for Sunderland and the stability needed makes total sense at this most difficult time in our history.
    KLD is not your typical archetypal chairman and over the years, his want to progress the club with Speakman has to be appreciated because I don't think there is a risk for KLD or his family's fortune because of the model used and as you say, if the project is tinkered with slightly, then they could be onto a good thing moving the club forward. The risk that is apparent however is if KLD walks away from the club and replaced by someone without a vision for the future. Fickle fans want KLD out and another billionaire to walk in chomping his cigar lying through their teeth about trophy's to be won and successes etc whilst surreptitiously taking the cream from the top without a vision except their own. I personally don't think the Kid is skimming and your review on outgoings and incomings provides that reveal. The Kid wants the club to work, keep going!
    He will have to spend some money next season even if Jackie Clarke is sold or not.
    SAFC!

    Evidently, I am commenting on this video after the heavy home defeat to Blackburn. Still, I was not expecting for this result to make my mind. The model, in my opinion, is low risk, low gain. Last year, it almost worked mainly due to individual charisma. This year we saw the full application. Not enough experience to deal with adversities. The moment some results went the wrong way, it was downhill non stop. I have the feeling the climate changed after the Newcastle loss. We need some (At least 5-6) players with Premier League experience from the lower shelf. With the current configuration, i cannot see us nearing the automatic even with some experienced players. I urge all the good people of Sunderland to keep the faith. If there's one thing that brings me to tears is the SoL packed with Sunderland's Finest! Ha way the lads!

    Hi Michael - nice to hear some reasoned comments about the model - I think it's a good approach. Speakman has brought in a lot of players that top level teams are now interested in - Ekwah, Bellingham, Ballard, Trai Hume, Jack Clarke - I'm not including Dan Neil or Patto in this as they were already here. SAFC are also spending money extending a lot of contracts to tie players down - compared to having to pay them to go or waiting while they wind down their contracts.
    I also think Aji & Cirkin will come good and join the in demand list above - criticism of Aji as sick note is very unfair - he stepped up for the team against Luton last season while not fully recovered and that made injury worse. West Ham were cute with Ekwah - Chelsea had a sell on clause, so they let him go for free but put a high sell on percentage to SAFC.
    Speakman & KLD aren't mugs, and I think they'll adjust parameters of model going forward. For head coach, I'd be happy with Steve Cooper or Danny Rohl. Not sure about Will Still - think he sees us as a stepping stone to PL and would jump ship faster than Alex Neil.
    As you say we need to see what happens over summer.

    Great video, Michael. Your argument for the model (and Speakman) only looks at pkayers/fees in and out. What you don't consider is the type of player. My view is we don't have a balanced squad which is why o9 is centre back, no defensive midfield, not good enough strikers, no depth, too many light weight midfielders, no leaders, no winning mentality. From a coaching side, we can't motivate, have no game plan, can't squad rotate leading to injuries and burnout. The model itself is a good theory, safc are just not executing well - down to Speakman? I must add the injury situation is dire. If you track back the team performance it shows we miss Cirkin and Huggins more than we think, IMHO. Gan canny.

    Reported fee for Hjelde approximately 1.5 million I believe? Just to add in to the equation. I take your point on the merits of the model but I can't give any credit to speakman and co for the failure to recruit a striker who can score goals over the last 3 transfer windows. HWTL

    • @michaelbowers541
      @michaelbowers541  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michaelbowers541 if we had invested money in the likes of Simms and Broahead rather than gamble money on potential,I for one would feel like they had a go. I must admit that I sometimes feel like I pay for a season ticket to watch a development side. the fact that our loaned players can't get into Hibs or Aris starting eleven is in itself a poor reflection of the model. Not to mention the head coach situation 😳

    • @michaelbowers541
      @michaelbowers541  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@markneill2364 Traintis plays regularly for Hibs I think.
      I'd say we still haven't had a big sale yet. And as I explained in the video, I think the blame should be pointed at KLD seeing as he's the main guy at the top. Prior to this season, it was a rarity we spent over £1m on one player. This season, when we've made money from three sales in Gooch, Lhadji & Stewart, we've paid over £1m for five players, which I think backs my point up about the model.
      Saying that, I agree Simms or Broadhead we should have signed. And this summer if (let's be honest when) Clarke is sold, we have no excuse then. If we don't have a go with the money that should be coming in, then I will agree with you. And they MUST get the head coach right as well. No excuses there either.

      @@michaelbowers541 I think it’s a 7 out of 10 ori approximately 66% success. In terms of managers, Neil and Mowbray were very good appointments and Beale was a disaster - 2 out of 3 success. Prior to that I reckon we had 3/4 poor managers in a row!
      On the playing front it’s been a similar ratio. In terms of asset value we got 12 million for Stewart, approx 20 million for Clarke, Ballard is worth 10m, and Hume and a fit Cirkin 5m. We’ve seen accelerated development of young players who were not getting a chance 3/4 years ago. Patto is worth 10-15m, Neil about 10m and Rigg has the potential to exceed that!
      We have had some terrific loans - Amad, Clarke, Roberts, Doyle and Witehead but clearly Burstow and Geldhardt didn’t fire up - again about 2 out of 3 success rate.
      Beale was the most concerning appointment. A poor coach with poor man management skills has sent us backwards. The next managerial appointment is critical!

    Sorry for your loss. This whole model thing is becoming tiresome. It is quite simple. Sunderland seem to have an attitude where if promotion happens then it will happen(last season coming close) for example.. Where as teams like Leeds go out and make it happen. That is the difference

  • @ThaneME2
    @ThaneME2 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Aside from the promotion season and the summer of last season, the last 3 transfer windows have been shocking IMO, personally I've never been a fan of the model, I've tried to give it a chance but recent windows haven't been good enough in terms of incomings and outgoings, the reasons why i don't like the model and why it doesn't works is u need to be flexible and progressive, in terms of flexibility they've absolutely destroyed the team in terms of experience, before the start of the summer window the balance still wasn't quite right but we had a few experienced players but this season we got rid of Gooch, Batth, Stewart and Pritchard, so 4 key experienced players gone and only brought in 1 player over the age of 25 in Dack, so straight away that's poor to begin with, then u get rid of the experience and bring in more inexperienced kids and the average age of squad dropping down to 22.7 which is far to young especially in the championship and finally the biggest problem is the wage bill, we've got the 4th lowest in the league, some see that as a positive, maybe last season yes but this season and going forward no cos u can't get promoted on a league one wage bill, how are u supposed to compete with the top sides in this division if you're still penny pinching, yes we'll see what happens in the summer but personally I've got no faith in this regime because i don't think they want to get promoted, let's be real aside from Clarke, Ballard and Amad they haven't shown enough ambition that tells me that they want to go up and with the absolute shambles that's happened on and off the pitch this season, i just want them gone personally, unfortunately I'm not gonna get my wish, i would love to be proven wrong but honestly I can't see this lot changing, IMO i don't think we'll ever get back to the prem under this lot, anyway away from the football glad to see u back mate, stay strong bro 👍

    RIGHT ! .......cant believe your gonna give speakman more time.....this is his squad now and its full of young players who are nowhere near ready and some will never be,also we have many many players who are made of glass who rarely play.we have brought in no experience to balance out the squad probably because of wages and no sell on value.we need a striker (k.moore was a no brainer) and have needed one for atleast the last 6 windows.he replaced a manager who finished 6th the previous season because he had a dip in form(nothing as bad as the current form) and he wanted to bring in experience which he has been proven right on.using us as a place of trade to make money which wont be spent on the squad.not sure of our wage bill but ill bet its atleast the 5th cheapest in the league.also the beale appointment, need i say more....no manager of any real stature will work undet speakman either....he has to go now or it will be same again.
