Definitely, if there is an option of clicking the like button 1 million times, I would do it! The ships, the birds, the bridge, the water, the tunnel, the sand, the perfect music, the gorgeous sky. You can't get better than that. A positive chill and excitement and a positive goosebump ran through me, absolutely amazing! Outstanding job there! I love it and am spoiled!
I'm your captain/closer to home Mark Don and Mel Grand funk railroad! Awesome music and what magnificent video! Crossed the bridge and tunnel in 1977 when stationed at Norfolk virginia thank you!
Love the somewhat melancholy feel of this song combined with the low clouds rolling in over the bay! I went to college in the Hampton Roads area, and this song is like a perfect anthem to play in my head as I fondly remember peaceful rainy days at the beach. And the wonderful smell of the tall pines in the humid summer air ....
Had to share this with a friend talking about the CBBT as this is an amazing video of an amazing route. I hope to experience it myself hopefully in 2022
Wow I wonder if the residents of the Hampton Roads know how bless they are to have this Bridge....This is soo beautiful and than to see that container ship was soo special. Thanks.
Wow- turned out great and a great video to see! I have always loved the CBBT ever since I first went on it in 1989 with my aunt and grandparents- never got to ride it at night but seeing it all lit up was just beautiful! Wow! My mind has officially been BLOWN away! I can't wait to one day get back down to VA Beach and check out this ride again!
Beautiful video. I remember when I was six or so I asked my parents to take me to this amazing bridge-tunnel on a family trip to Virginia. Too bad that I couldn't remember the actual scenery and I'm now back in my home country (Japan) so it's not easy to travel there myself. Thank you so much for sharing this spectacular drive!
Oh, btw, I was watching a video of the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line (a Japanese equivalent of the CBBT) right after first seeing your CBBT clip, and was very surprised to find your comment there. Nice coincidence!
I was actually on the CBBT just a couple days ago as I drove down from Michigan to Virginia and Maryland (and back) for the holiday weekend. I drove north on it last Saturday morning on my way up to St. Michaels, MD as well as to Annapolis (I enjoyed driving over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge too). It was definitely a spectacular drive. It was cool seeing the bridge and tunnel in this video during dusk. Thanks for posting!
Wow Jim! That was great all around. I liked the work you put into it. Totally worth what seemed to be you driving around and around (which doesn't sound like a bad way to spend an evening!).
Thanks, we really had a good time going back and forth (a bathroom stop was crucial to that as well), it was a wonderful way to spend the evening to be honest. I got my $13 worth :)
Freewayjim How many trips did you end up going up and down the bridge? I'm assuming you used the turnarounds at the overlook on the Eastern Shore just past the toll booths and the pier after the southern tunnel to make the repeated trips?
***** As long as you don't pass the toll booths on the other side, you have spots where you can legally turn around and drive the other side. I never have done that, because the bridge usually marks the end of a 11 hour journey and we're longing for the hotel room by then.
Well, you definitely weren't kidding about having some great things in store for your replacement video of the CBBT. This goes down as one of your top 5 or 10 best edited videos. As for the footage...this is pretty darn awesome stuff. This really does feel like you're driving over an ocean, not just a lake or a bay. I've never experienced going "head first" toward a massive ship, out in open waters...of course, in this case, you were dipping into an undersea tunnel. That had to be a real sight to behold. I also enjoyed the detour and footage of the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and the footage at dusk with the sunset and vibrant colors added such a brilliant touch to this. I'm sharing this on my FreewayBrent Facebook fan page. Well deserved recognition for this one!
Thanks Brent, I had never been that close to a large ship in my previous trips across the CBBT, it was busy out there that night. Glad you liked it, thanks for the kind words.
Great ride, glad you had a stunning sunset for the south bound ride. Music was well chosen for topic and nautical theme worked well. I especially liked the aqua transitions.
Thank you and thanks for noticing the aqua transitions, I try to put little touches like that in the videos. I also used an underwater themed notation bar that I had never used before.
Absolutely OUTSTANDING in every way...an incredible way to experience the CBBT short of driving it myself...of course, I'd want Grand Funk Railroad playing in my own Acura as well.
Great work as always Jim! This is definitely one of my favorite classic bridges/tunnels in North America. It's amazing how it can survive through such harsh weather during hurricane season! Reminds me of when my family went to OBX, NC in 2012. Can't wait to drive this in ~6 months when I upgrade from a permit to a license! Looks like this bridge needs some resurfacing soon though. There's only so much crack-filler a bridge can take! In my opinion, the fact that the toll revenue isn't keeping this wonder in tip-top shape is adding salt to a wound.
Another great video, good job! It's been quite a few years since I've driven the CBBT, and then it was on a cold, rainy night. It's not that far away, I think a road trip is in order!
That was a nice ride Jim, I had driven across the (CBBT), once late at night going north, but we couldn't see anything except for the road ahead. Almost at the end, DOT shut down the south bound side for maintenance and all traffic was diverted to north bound lanes, via a Virginia state trooper shuttling traffic back and forth. Would love to drive it during day time. Great job....
+Freewayjim Hey, Doesn't this remind you of the Key West drive in Florida US1? Not exactly like it, but very similar. It gave off a Florida type of feeling when my parents and I drove here a month ago for Spring break. It really reminded me of The overseas highway my parents and I drove on in spring break 2014.
+Peter John Lerum I've never driven the overseas highway but I've seen photos and videos, this (CBBT) looks more interesting although it is much shorter.
Very cool video! It was a little more tense before the second span opened in the late 90's. Just a two lane bridge out in the middle of the water with other cars coming right at you.
Those ferry boats you mentioned was later acquired by the Delaware River and Bay Authority, becoming the Cape May-Lewes Ferry (rode it twice). To this day, there is still debate to replace it with a Delaware Bay version of the CBBT, a suspension bridge, or a cable-stayed bridge (as the Philadelphia Navy Yard is now closed, a bridge can now be an option).
I have taken one round trip on this road in August 1981...don't remember much about it but do remember the big ships going by and thinking we were going to run into them...what I find a little crazy is 5 years ago the toll was $15 on this 17 & change mile road and the GWB is $15 now possibly $16 soon to go maybe 2 miles across the Hudson...wow
This road is amazingly tranquil as it hovers over the Chesapeake. When approaching from the opposite side, you can barely see any land on the other shore, with a fat and happy seagull claiming their own street light pole as their sole turf.
The camera doesn't do it justice on how awesome the views are here. It's wild to see the lights of Norfolk and the bridge and just disappear at the channels. If you haven't, sunrise is another amazing time to cross
As this is being played, the Thimbal Shoals Channel Tunnel is undergoing expansion, with a new southbound tunnel being bored using the same type of equipment used for the English Channel Tunnel.
A most dangerous stretch for windshields from gull collisions. N.C. 12 through the national seashore is worth a video. Parts of it are desolate and desert like with a beautiful crossing over Oregon Inlet.
Excellent! I filmed this (and the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel) in May, 1987, when it was still 2 lanes. I've posted it to my youtube channel if you want a comparison. Video technology was a tad more primitive back then.
Love to take this drive, have been over it several times in the past few years. Any chance you would consider doing a video of NC Rt 12 down the entire length of the Outer Banks? You can get a ferry ride in on the video as well if you include Ocracoke. Great videos you make here, I stumbled on your channel quite by accident. Love it! Subscribed.
Jim, you call it one of the most spectacular driving experiences....? I call it one of the most horrible, frightening experiences of my life. I drove across the bridge in the early 80s. It was one lane! And I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that when I looked down, it was not paved - there was this sort of grill work and you could see the water right beneath you. Could that be right? Or is my memory distorted due to having had such a terrifying panic attack that I couldn't breathe? There was nowhere to pull over, and I couldn't stop because if cars were behind me, I would have held up the whole thing. I felt TRAPPED! It went on and on and on forever -- I forget how many miles long you said it is. Before I even looked at the video, I was thinking about taking a tranquilizer! :) But as always, you did a great job.
Of course it was paved back then, it's never been just a grill for a road surface. It is 17.6 miles long. Thank you :) at least now there is that extra lane each way except for the tunnels.
Wow. What a great video experience. I don't think you could've picked a better song to go with it as well. ;-) Hopefully, some time in the future, I'll get to make a trip down to the CBBT myself. Many thanks, FreewayJim.
I soooo wanna do this on my bike!! The wife is from there so, she's done it. But, not with me and the bike. Oh, and I told her the name of the song and by who before you showed it at the bottom of the vid. But I really wanna do it with a ship going over as we go under. That was so cool!! Ya lucky bastard!! That's really kind of you, thanks, lame music? You do realize there isn't a single song I could use that would please everyone. Whether you personally liked the song or not is irrelevant, what does matter is if the song I chose worked well with the footage and the mood and this did, that's what's important.
Hey FreewayJim do you have any plans to make long distance (and I mean long long distance) videos like BarbiePoleDancer does anytime soon? They would be awesome, but I can see that syncing them with all the signs and info and stuff for such a long duration would be a lot of tedious work.
No I do not, I think those videos are pointless and aren't very entertaining and lose most viewers within the first 5-10 minutes. The longest video I ever did is of I60 Miles of I-70 west of Denver last summer (Video 13-60), unless a road is that spectacular it would only hold an appeal for a very few people, and even at the 27 minutes my video was I think that's pushing the limits of most people's attention span for something like that.
The newer southbound lanes are obviously so much nicer with the break-down lane. You aren't kidding about how the pop charts have changed over the years. If you can stomach looking at the top-selling singles nowadays, the list is always dominated by Bieber, selena gomez, One Direction, that ilk. Parents of 12-year old girls should make them spend their allowances on something besides i-Tunes...lol.
I have a question Jim (and you don't have to answer if you'd rather not) but I've always wondered how you, and Brent, Click, and all these other "freeway video" people afford the gas to do all this driving! LOL! How do you afford it??
I really don't know how to answer that other than we have jobs/careers that allow us to afford the excess driving we do. In my case I really don't travel much outside of my one major trip a year.
Ok gotcha. But I am curious, though, if you don't travel other than once a year then why are there so many videos (even recently) of you driving in places other than Atlanta? lol
***** in previous years we took an overnight trip to someplace within a 8 hour drive of Atlanta around spring break (2013 was Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville), I did not do that this year. Driving around Atlanta is not a big deal really. When I take the one big trip I plan it to get as many interesting areas along the way...really the driving and sightseeing IS the vacation. In other words I make the most out of my time on the road. So if I'm going to NH like I did this year, I'll get as much as I can along the way to and from and usually take different routes as to avoid overlap.
I live in Hampton roads you did us justice thank you ❤️
Thank you, I had a lot of fun gathering the footage and making this video.
Definitely, if there is an option of clicking the like button 1 million times, I would do it! The ships, the birds, the bridge, the water, the tunnel, the sand, the perfect music, the gorgeous sky. That view of the ship passing over the tunnel was godlike! Wish I had the money to do all kinds of travelling, but that's why I come here!
Thanks, it was very cool to see the ship cross in person, I've crossed this bridge 5 times and that was a first for me.
Great video..took this trip last year...you have captured it better than we ever could have. Thanks!
Thank you very much!
It's been 10 years since I've had the pleasure of crossing the CBBT, so it was so nice seeing this beautiful video. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Had to share this with a friend talking about the CBBT as this is an amazing video of an amazing route. I hope to experience it myself hopefully in 2022
Thank you and it is indeed an amazing drive, hope you get there!
Wow I wonder if the residents of the Hampton Roads know how bless they are to have this Bridge....This is soo beautiful and than to see that container ship was soo special. Thanks.
Yeah, it makes you wonder, doesn't it? thank you for watching.
lol honestly it’s annoying at times but we are lol all of our crossings are like this expect for 1 (James river bridge)
Great video and photos
Thank you!
So peaceful and wonderful though! One of your best videos I've seen so far Jim. Good job!
Thank you very much!
Great video Jim, I love what you did with the CBBT! What a great way to spend an evening.
Thanks, we really enjoyed ourselves out there.

Freewayjim How many trips did you end up going up and down the bridge? I'm assuming you used the turnarounds at the overlook on the Eastern Shore just past the toll booths and the pier after the southern tunnel to make the repeated trips?
Rick's Travelogue We turned around 2 times at the scenic overlook before the toll booth on the north end and once at island #1.
Freewayjim Very nice. That's one of the best ways to stretch your $13 toll. No need for the 24 hour return discount with that.
***** As long as you don't pass the toll booths on the other side, you have spots where you can legally turn around and drive the other side.
I never have done that, because the bridge usually marks the end of a 11 hour journey and we're longing for the hotel room by then.

Rio Bautista Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Definitely one of your best videos so far. Song was a perfect match and it's an all-time favorite of mine -great to see it in your work.
Thank you, I love that song as well.
Great ride, glad you had a stunning sunset for the south bound ride. Music was well chosen for topic and nautical theme worked well. I especially liked the aqua transitions.

Amazing video ! You have done outstanding job ! The additional footage are one nice touch + the sea and the ships ... wow :)
Thank you very much!
Absolutely brilliant video Jim. I compare this of course with the Overseas Highway to Key West. Look forward to the new videos.
Thank you very much!

One of your top five Jim !

Absolutely spectacular!

I'm a big Southwest and Mountain West guy I'm very ignorant about the land of the east coast! I need to change that this looks awesome!!!!
This is a great night drive, nice music too!
Thank you!

Surprised by one carriageway has a continuous emergency lane but not the opposed carriageway. Great ride, mainly at dusk!
Thanks, The one that doesn't was built in 1964, the one that does was built in 1999, that pretty much sums it up.
I have taken one round trip on this road in August 1981...don't remember much about it but do remember the big ships going by and thinking we were going to run into them...what I find a little crazy is 5 years ago the toll was $15 on this 17 & change mile road and the GWB is $15 now possibly $16 soon to go maybe 2 miles across the Hudson...wow

real nice, have to check that one out myself, drive that stretch.
Thanks, I'd highly recommend it.
Amazing
Thank you!
As this is being played, the Thimbal Shoals Channel Tunnel is undergoing expansion, with a new southbound tunnel being bored using the same type of equipment used for the English Channel Tunnel.
I rode over this bridge I was like this is nice yet scary at the same time!!
Well done as usual Jim. Good choice of music using GFR.
Thank you!

Simplesmente espetacular!
Thank you!
This might be your marquee video of this season...unless you've got some surprises to spring up in upcoming videos.
Thanks, I think I've got better coming down the road, no pun :)
LOL
From Texas to New Jersey, the land of big waters, big skies, flat land, shifting sands, hurricanes and thick sweet salty air.
Nice job.
Thanks!
Happy new Year Jim
Thanks, Happy New Year to you!
AWESOME!!!
Thanks!
Freewayjim Me & my Son Watched a few so Cool ‼️
Thank you very much for watching! glad you enjoyed it.
Great video! Though I do wish the parallel tunnels were there in the first place; because of the budget fund issues, this could prevent the tunnels from being constructed. . .
Thanks!
Freewayjim No problem! Oh, and I didn't even know there were cruise ships out there too!
I liked it.

I would suggest you join the FreewayJim group on facebook, that's where we all the road videographers hangout.
Imagine cars coming other way on bridge as in tunnels. Such was the way 1964-1999.
My wife freaked out when she drove over this bridge for the first time.
I love this video. The song is the perfect Chesapeake bay song! How do you find the right song for every video?
Thank you, I had it in mind for this place for a long time, just needed the right footage.
I remember in 2007 there’s a accident on the bridge
The road is similar to new Orleans lake bridge
With the exception of the two tunnels, 4 man-made islands, fishing pier, curves, and high-level bridges, and this doesn't cross a lake.
Beautiful views. Glad you used captions as I had to watch it muted thanks to the lame music.
That's really kind of you, thanks, lame music? You do realize there isn't a single song I could use that would please everyone. Whether you personally liked the song or not is irrelevant, what does matter is if the song I chose worked well with the footage and the mood and this did, that's what's important.

Landscape Structures Pink Slide No Leave Kendall Drive-In
Landscape Structures Pink Slide No Leave Kendall Drive-In
Landscape Structures Pink Slide No Leave Kendall Drive-In
Mountain tunnels I'm not scared of its just the underwater tunnel I'm scared of 😳 and I'm not scared of any bridges
This is a cool video, Freewayjim. But you need to slow down.
The video footage is sped up, I'm not going much if anything above the posted speed limit.
I have a question Jim (and you don't have to answer if you'd rather not) but I've always wondered how you, and Brent, Click, and all these other "freeway video" people afford the gas to do all this driving! LOL! How do you afford it??

Driving around Atlanta is not a big deal really. When I take the one big trip I plan it to get as many interesting areas along the way...really the driving and sightseeing IS the vacation. In other words I make the most out of my time on the road. So if I'm going to NH like I did this year, I'll get as much as I can along the way to and from and usually take different routes as to avoid overlap.
ah ok. :)

Nice video as usual but that song is as bad today as it was in 1970 ... boring. To each his own.
Thanks....there is not a single song I could use that would please everyone so it's pointless to even go there.
True enough.
