  • (10 Oct 1968) A name to be reckoned with, the British-bred "Vaguely Noble", bought by American Robert Franklyn for a record price ten months ago. Since then he's won almost a hundred thousand pounds, and his win in the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, beating Lester Piggott on "Sir Ivor", makes his the wonder horse of the year. But it's retirement for one of our greatest Steeplechasers. The great Arkle - is to remain in County Kildare, never to race again.

VN was once owned by Winston Churchill. He is noted in the pedigree pages to be "Irish", not of Great Britainis descent, although his sire and dam were British. His grandsire on the dams side (Noble Lassie) was the great italian runner, Nearco, who went on to breed Neararctic, then Northern Dancer, a line that is world wide even today. His sire' (Vienna) had a so so breeding career with Vaguely Noble without a doubt his best foal by far. But he Brought the great Hyperion--Gainesbobough line.
VN also had quite a few French horses in him. There were many Irish dams, including the often seen Catnip. It is these horses from different countries that gave him his strength and stamina. He beat the great Sir Ivor who is claimed by the British, but who is a progeny of Turn To, and Irish horse who was imported to America, a practice that seemed to be very common in the mid-1900's.
Vaguely Noble was one of the most beautiful stayers, with a terrific way of moving across ground. RIP Vaguely Noble!!!!

Churchill did not own VN. He was first owned by the Holliday family. Churchill owned VN’s sire “VIENNA”. The Hollidays owned the dam “Noble Lassie”. VN was one of the top 5 horses of the sixties. David Simmons

Vaguely Noble was never owned by Winston Churchill. He was first owned by the estate of Major Lionel Holliday. The major bred him using Winston Churchill’s sire Vienna for Noble Lassie, the dam of Vaguely Noble. Vaguely Noble was sold for 136000 guineas to an American doctor after he won the Observer Gold Cup by 7 lengths. He raced as a 3 year old in France. David Simmons

Vaguely Noble was a monster on soft ground . Etienne Pollet reckoned that Vaguely Noble was the equal of Sea Bird , although I would beg to differ . He made The Derby winner , Sir Ivor look one paced on this showing .
