Black Widow as a character was supposed to be both a hot femme fatale AND a badass assassin. She's the kind of character that will lure you and poison your drink and also wrestle you to death when the moment calls for it. I feel like It's difficult to implement the "seductive" side of her character into a game mechanic without making her look like a cheap joke character, which completely abolish her "badass" side. It's also funny that they don't include her widow's bite gauntlet into the game, which is one of her most famous signature weapon. But again, it's probably because they put her to this elite sniper fantasy role so we won't see much of her close-quarter combat tools.
"I feel like It's difficult to implement the "seductive" side of her character into a game mechanic without making her look like a cheap joke character, which completely abolish her "badass" side." Yep, I think it's exactly it. In my opinion, this game's design strikes a very good balance between her "seductive" and "badass" side; I really don't think a character must have "sex-appeal" in its gameplay just because it's present in their design (ironically, it's one of the thing that frustrates me the most about LoL's Miss Fortune, since she isn't a seductress lore-wise, but she got a whole skill about charming others regardless (though, to be fair, that's probably a relic from her super-duper early days, like "pre-Gangplank rework" early)).
@@HuneeBruh It's not about progression, but about not changing a fundamental part of the character. It's like reviving Uncle Ben or giving Daredevil cybernetic eyes. You're removing the primary motivator and trauma of a character that defines how they ended up where they are. In particular with something like Strange (and like my Daredevil example) you're treating a disability as if it's a flaw that needs to be fixed, which in general is just kinda icky.

It's fun and frustrating to hear Skayen rant about Adam being too buff and seem too powerful as a support when his primary fire can two shot you if it hits your head both times. Like this guy IS powerful. Edit: i mispelled Skayen's name
At least MR Isn't going for Support=weak They went for Strategist Not just for healing But also destrupion and or damage Hell even Ultron is apparently going to be strategist
And also I personally think it works for Adam, because his passive is that he gets a free revive. 38:00 I think the funny thing on "Black Widow is copying Widowmaker" is this exact irony of Widowmaker originally being inspired by Black Widow and then when Marvel makes a hero shooter just so conveniently Black Widow has a sniper and a grappling hook like Widowmaker
@HuneeBruh although functioning completely different from Widowmaker's grappling hook, Black Widow's "Edge Dancer" features a grappling hook on recast after landing the first kick. The hook is a very subtle part of her kit compared to Widow's, but it's not like the joke comparison isn't this surface level on other aspects too
@ yeah I got farther in the video and saw it,but she she uses it for like half a second and if they changed her animation to have her just like dash towards the person it functionally would be the same. The closest thing to a grappling hook is Peni’s webs and the hook line from punisher

Cap's base design seems iron many because in this timeline he woke up in the year 2099 so EVERYTHING is vey techy. Also the rupulsor is not a repulsor, it's a magnet for the shield
Tbf to Adam Warlock, his lore is that he's the "genetically perfect man" who will always be in his prime, so he could become our immortal god emperor. So him being yoked makes sense for that purpose
Yeah and i dont see how he can say “look at mercy you can see shes vulnerable compared to this hulking guy” thats the thing adam is all power in comics. He two shots you in game and gain health back up like nothing and comes right back after killing him. YOU SHOULD be worried when seeing him compared to mercy
He's a classical warlock. Like the 3000 year old confined to a tower guy that is permanently attempting to further his own goals. Not a wizard, but a true WARlock. You have to be either old or incredibly powerful and notably not decrepit. Think Warlock from DOTA2, that's a warlock. Think Saruman, that's a warlock. Gandalf? Wizard. No tower, decrepitly old, and studious, unlike warlocks which prefer towers, are old but still mobile like 50-ish, and prefer pondering orbs to scry and make plans to take over places. Warlocks, in the classical sense, are evil or less moral wizards that focus on pursuing goals from the tops of their towers, are typically male, old but not fragile, immensely powerful, aren't seen studying books (are already strong enough), and have Presence. They make themselves KNOWN, whereas a wizard may just stick in their tower without leaving for years studying books. Adam Warlock has the classical warlock feel, which is very close to a wizard feel. The two are so close, that there isn't any difference, because that's all made up. I guarantee someone can find a contradiction to what I said above. Because sorcerer, warlock, magus, mage, wizard, and witch all had very similar definitions and connotations. Only recently did we start classifying them by any real metrics and attempting to come to a consensus on what they are, and we can't agree truly because of the origins being basically the exact same. Sorry for the book, I write long comments.
@@jplays338 ...I appreciate the effort that went into the comment, but the reality is that this is just like the whole "dragon vs. drake" argument: just something made up by the internet. Traditionally, there's no difference between warlocks and wizards, they are just synonyms (warlock is traditionally used as a male equivalent to "witch", but it and "wizard" are used interchangeably even for that meaning); modern fantasy writers (especially when writing for IPs that use "classes", such as WoW and D&D) use each word to describe a different concept, but they only do this because it's an easy way to convey worldbuilding, not because there's an actual lexical difference between them. Notably, "warlock" doesn't share the etymology with "war". The "war" part in "warlock" comes from Old English "waerloga" ("ae" as in the diphthong) and means something like "liar"/"betrayer"/"deceiver" (Wikipedia gives "breaker of oaths"), whereas the word "war" has French roots (Wikipedia gives Old Northern French "werre", from Medieval Latin "werra", from Frankish "werru" - the "w" then developed into a hard "g" for most Latin languages, such as Italian and French itself) and means "confusion", "disarray" or "chaotic fight".
Grappling has been part of the Black Widow's character for a while too. At one point she actually was seen as a Spider-man derivative cause she'd grapple from roof tops and was spider themed.
@@3BSkyen Yep, as "romantic" as Whedon's romance plots tend to be at least. Honestly all I remember of it by now is the moment where Bruce faceplants into her cleavage in the middle of a fight.
Fun thing about Adam is that his only healing is through his skill whilst most of the strategists can heal through their basics. The basic and one skill of his is focused on damage. So youre not entirely wrong on expecting him to be dps
Comic buff here, the "A stands for France?" Thing you were referencing is actually from old Ultimate Universe(Same universe that got us Ultimatum and Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver incest storylines) US agent is just from the many storylines that Cap goes against the US government(he does it A LOT, even in 80s comics) and when he is disilusioned with the American Dream of freedom that he grew up on. Nomad was just one of the many times he has gone against the establishment Edit: also the afterimages may be referencing his sprint animation that has afterimage effect, the futuristic tech is because this cap in the lore of rivals was defrosted in the year 99
Captain America's "Power Gauntlet" are basically how he holds the shield. His hands are still free and it's sort of magnetically attached to the glove. He's another one on his back for when he places it there.
The conversation at around 23:38 is very valid when talking about the overwhelming majority of cavepeople designs in media, including this one, but i would like to point out that he is wearing a costume. I don't read him as an average ancient man, he is an ancient superhero, the animal head is a mask, and the claws are fir superheroing. I think its kinda neat to look at it like that.
The thing about this game is that the roles the characters are in aren’t as heavily strict as say Overwatch is, characters in non-damage roles can do pretty good damage by themselves or support others nearly as well.
As a lifelong X-Men fan seeing so many X-Men in this game makes me so happy like obviously many of the iconic ones aren’t their but the ones they did chose and the designs they gave them make me so happy also Hulk plays kind of like D.V.A where if you damage hulk form enough he turns back into Bruce and you have to kind of retreat and hope to get back into hulk form and get back in the fight
I'm sure someone else has said it, but just to reiterate, Cap's design looks like that because in his universe, he was thawed out in 2099. It looks like future tech because it is future tech.
The thing about a lot of the character designs that I think most people don't realize is that 1: Most if not all these characters have decades of designs (both in the primary 616 universe and in the multitudes of alternate universes that Marvel has made) for Marvel Rivals to play with, and that a lot of these will most likely be amalgams of these different versions. 2: The characters in Marvel Rivals are not the ones from the standard 616 universe that most anyone who will pick up a comic will know, even the characters themselves relay that to us threw their voice lines when interacting with each other. Some are from at least this games 616, others are from an alternate 2099 timeline than the one in the comics, and some are from their own universe that where apart of a single mini series Marvel made (i.e This Psylocke being from a series of one-shot comics centered in Feudal Japan). And 3: Them doing themed skins that are linked by their own in-game multiverse lore (i.e The Galactic Protocol skins for T'Challa, Steve, Clint, and Mantis) mudding the waters as well. Which is fun for me as a fan personally cause I get to see alternate takes on characters I love, but I digress. This means that the team at Marvel Rivals have the chance to use the old designs but also make tweaks to fit the lore they are spinning for the game. So with that being said I can understand how confusing it is when people see the base design and don't understand why they went with it. Unfortunately, I don't think its gonna get easier, cause they do give us ideas on why they look different to most of their comic incarnations. The bad part is its in the lore section and even then you have to put the pieces together yourself, and its not always as cut and dry as you might think due to certain voice lines you get in game. For lore nuts like myself that like to dig into this stuff for fun, it is a huge pain Anyway TLDR: In-game lore used to justify the break from the traditional comic book look of these characters, and along with decades of media to chose from for inspiration and you have recipe for designs that make you go "neat, but why that specifically"
Honestly that's my favourite thing about it, they could've been lazy, they could've just ripped a design from a specific comic, but instead they put care and attention into the designs to make them not just "oh it's this character from THAT comic" instead its "Oh a new rendition based on their comic history alongside our own little things" and I love it so much ugh these designs make me feral in the best way.
Many Modern Marvel games go for realilism. I'm glad this game opted for an art style and goes all in on style. The fact that they give you 33 characters off rip is insane so hey good on em, I hope overwatch 3 doesn't end up like 1 or 2 😅
@@Dracobyte a better compaison would probably be the k/da skin line in general, with her mostly being made to profit off the popularity of k-pop over anything else
I'm not exactly sure why they gave Dagger high heels considering her costume in the comics doesn't have them, but I actually do think there is an argument for it fitting her character somewhat. In the comics, Dagger's mom was a super model, and an incredibly vain and self-centered one to boot. I could totally see her Mom basically forcing her daughter to learn how to walk around in heels and control what she wears just because she is her daughter and other people would expect that of her as well. Then again, I can also see an argument for the opposite. Especially since Dagger makes her costume AFTER she ran away from home.
@@BeyondTrash-xe1vs hey, what if we solved that by making the women tall? Would it be too unrealistic for the magic intergalactic empire game? Jokes aside, that too is part of storytelling and character design. Why does this character need to be short? Dagger I get, it emphasizes the contrast with Cloak, it's an interplay. There's some uncomfy tropes at play but I understand the storytelling at least. Black Widow? Makes no sense for all the reasons Skyen pointed out. Why fixate on a trope that levels all designs to the common denominator, limits what you can do, and forces you into weirdass decisions like giving platform heels to the no nonsense assassin?
So the cap bits: I'm pretty sure the gauntlets are supposed to be like a magnetic connector to the weird energy of the shield. There's been a few caps that run around with special non-vibranium versions of his shield (or ones with special things added to the standard vibranium shield) and gauntlets to pull the shield back to him/attach it to his back.
Also just gonna say that it's pretty obvious what the gauntlets are for no? Like..big glowing things on the outside of gloves, metal shield attaches to outside of glove, animation literally showing shield attach to beg blue thing outside glove
Cloak & Dagger make we wonder if Lamb & Wolf should have a transformation mechanic instead. R to transform into one another, Q as their main damaging ability, W for mobility or as a stat steroid, and E as an ability of the other half, ie. Lamb would summon Wolf to attack like her current W.
I don't think it works for lamb and wolf as much as it does for cloak and dagger, Wolf and Lamb are specifically meant to be 2 halves of one whole, so having them both out at the same time makes far more sense. Although I do have issues with their gameplay and how wolf just doesn't really do much, it makes him feel like a pet rather than the half of the character.
The funny thing about Skyen talking about the rock hard abs of Black Panther's skin is that its been leaked that we're getting The Thing in the game, who has literal rock abs lol
1:04:05 captain uses the power in the gauntlets and on his back to carry the energy shield skyen, you can actually see this is how he carry his shield in the animations
Also, when he lost his shield (I think it was in heroes reborn right before Mark Waid's run) Iron Man made him a gauntlet that created an energy shield that Cap used until he fixed/found his shield.
I haven't gotten to the psylocke section yet but, Psylocke's look in this game is based on the demon days comics! And Luna Snow was an OC created for marvel future fight, a marvel mobile game. She then got her own comic book with a few of the other original characters in that game, and now she's in here!
1:20:11 i really love cloak and dagger's "decay", but it's largely because it gives off "oberon and titania" vibes to me and i just adore that. idk if it was intentional but that's what it reminds me of and i can't help but love it.
i really love everything about Doom's design except for how YOLKED he is. his armor blends magic and technology really well, and his actual outfit looks rather regal and authoritarian. i just wish he didnt look like he ate 10 cows and took their strength for his own.
Nah,that's my favorite part. If you're doing a giant crossover, hero shooter, thing, might as well give random characters inordinate amounts of steroids.
I understand why Skyen doesn't like the primordial first black panther design. But I really like it. To me it really evoke Herakles wearing the pelt of the nemian lion as part of that ancient hero archetype.
Really hope you do more, it's a very interesting angle to see you look at designs of characters it's pretty much impossible to not know (most of them, at least). Also, goddamn this game having three mandatory short stories for every single character makes me suuuuper jealous as a lore fan of you-know-what game
I think the blue glow on Cap’s shield and the glow on his gloves are connected to show that it calls the shield back to him. Now the thing that does seem weird with the that though is that then the shield doesn’t seem to actually attach to the glow on his hand, but instead on his forearm.
Yeah, it's very clearly inspired by Cap's energy shield era, also explaining the glowing outline on the shield. I agree that it doesn't lean into it strong enough though.
Adam Warlock seems to be inspired by the Guardians of the Galaxy game version as far as I can tell. Adam Warlock has been more scifi than magic for some time now, so honestly his design makes a lot of sense here. Captain Americas gauntlets are like that for arming/attaching the shield to his forearm.
Killing Hulk makes him turn into Banner instead of dieing, then if you manage to survive as Banner, you can Hulk out again once the ability is of its cooldown. Its basically like D-Va. I apreciate the restraint of not having Penny Parker be like D-Va, but the mechanic is a really cool idea so give it to Hulk where it fits very well.
The tension between whether Dagger is sexy or not is that Cloak and Dagger are teenagers in the comics. I THINK Marvel Rivals aged them up to adults, with designs like that I sure HOPE they were aged up to adults, but I can see why the game designers would struggle with how sexy to make her even if it is (eugh) comic accurate.
Two things: you once briefly mention and compare Peni to her spiderverse counterpart but game Peni is more accurate to comic Peni then spiderverse Number 2: I don’t know if you know this but the Psylocke skin is a refrence to the current ultimate X men comic
Media has developed this trope the "Sexy Female Sniper" that was probably developed from Sniper Wolf or some earlier example that I don't know about. Being noticeable in that way while being a sniper is kind of counterintuitive because the entire point of a sniper is to not be noticed.
The god of magic is a temporary transformation in the comics ! Basically, Loki steals his job as sorcerer supreme by saying "Mom (the Vishantis) says it's my turn on the PS5 (to be sorcerer supreme)". Eventually Steven gets fed up of being a veterinarian and goes to Ask Yggdrasil for power against Loki. And he gets the cool outfit with the tree branch as a scepter !
I love that Marvel Rivals went with their own stylized aesthetic. God, I hope Jean Grey makes it to the game. Her costume designing is always a point of interest and confusion.
I imagine Jean grey will likely have her classic outfit, the clone of her that became goblin queen, her old ms marvel outfit, and phoenix. Nightcrawler might have himself, his pirate version, his evil dad, and maybe even a referance to his preist phase.
I hope to see X men Red inspired one but almost all of hers are iconic and great in their own way But I think she'll be in the green pheonix one by default
Captain America in the game runs around that’s basically his whole kit and that’s why his select animation is those fast after effects. The pants and boots make sense to me taken that he doesn’t need armor to run around if anything it’d get in his way and since he’s lunging forward at the enemy head first his torso would need that protection. The boots of course helping him run faster or something like that. I’m assuming the gauntlets are all to show us they power up his shield he clenches his fist when he activates his abilities.
19:33 you described it perfectly every character looks so cool and awesome. One of my friends ask the squad to not load up another match until he was done doing something. Usually we get impatient if he isn't back in 5 minutes and load another match. But in marvel rivals we load up practice mode and just mess around with the characters for 30+ minutes. Just flying/climbing/swinging as these characters are fun.
tbh I thought adam warlock's skin markings were meant to imitate muscle "texture", like the kinds of lines you see in muscle anatomy drawings. I also got the impression that he has this "ultimate life form" thing going on so it's why he doesn't have the muscle striations that people have but rather something else that ig helps with making him seem alien, and is why he's golden
to be fair Adam being yoked helps avoid the typical design of support characters as looking too weak to be in battle. I like that they didn't design him as a scrawny wizard when all the other supports are small too lol.
Cap has more tech because this version wasn't revived until 2099, so he's "Future Cap." Also it looks to me like the tech gauntlets might hold on/recall his shield? It doesn't have a handle and just seems to lock on to them
The part where you were talking about Adam Warlock having a body type that signifies damage dealer is very interesting to me, because it's an area where this game branches somewhat from the typical archetypes of what supports and tanks and DPSs are allowed to do. Healers in this game are incredibly slippery, able to out-heal damage from most DPSs over a short period of time just long enough to get away, making Jeff, Warlock, Snow, and Rocket Racoon into effectively off-tanks. On top of that, Adam Warlock in particular can charge up a rather devastating barrage of missiles at an enemy, enough to lower a tank to nearly half-health if even most of them hit. So his character design actually does reflect that while he is a healer, he is also much more capable of holding his own than you would expect from a dedicated medic. Anyway hope you see this and it makes sense.
For the Growth and Decay skin, you brought up the start of it being less impactful, but I think that's the point? Like, its telling the story of this version of the characters. Two opposing forces existing in the same world, but separate; then they meet, and eventually come together as a single unit.
One thing I like about Strange is how they use his cape and collar to bulk out his silhouette, visually identifying him as a tank without making him weirdly yoked
I also like that you can see how much meter he has by how visible the purple runes on his cloak are.
The best part of this game is having tanks that don’t look like they would be tanks like Dr strange and thor or cap
You would think thor would be a tank only cause of his build

I feel like It's difficult to implement the "seductive" side of her character into a game mechanic without making her look like a cheap joke character, which completely abolish her "badass" side.
It's also funny that they don't include her widow's bite gauntlet into the game, which is one of her most famous signature weapon. But again, it's probably because they put her to this elite sniper fantasy role so we won't see much of her close-quarter combat tools.
"I feel like It's difficult to implement the "seductive" side of her character into a game mechanic without making her look like a cheap joke character, which completely abolish her "badass" side."
Yep, I think it's exactly it.
@@drakegrandx5914 But she doesn't have a Charming skill? all her skills are damage XD
Strange has a voice line where he talks about how he still feels his hands shaking. So yeah it's still canon

Except she doesn’t have a grappling hook?
@HuneeBruh although functioning completely different from Widowmaker's grappling hook, Black Widow's "Edge Dancer" features a grappling hook on recast after landing the first kick. >The wizard feel
Sir his name is Adam WARLOCK, he is a WARLOCK.
@@jplays338great comment thx for sharing
And he revives people

For lore nuts like myself that like to dig into this stuff for fun, it is a huge pain
Anyway TLDR: In-game lore used to justify the break from the traditional comic book look of these characters, and along with decades of media to chose from for inspiration and you have recipe for designs that make you go "neat, but why that specifically"

His obsession over Black Panther's butt out of context should be in a try not to laugh challenge.
Knowing nothing about comics, that backstory would make me expect her to aggressively REJECT heels and such, making the design almost nonsensical!
It doesn't reakky work, as wasn't she dancer before being kidnapped?
I'm pretty sure it's as simple as "women are shorter, but they need to have taller hit boxes therefore heels."
I think from a meta-perspective, it's for the hitbox.
For those wondering, Psylockes design here is based off the Peach Momoko comic, Demon Days
Came here to say this. Also, the blue effects on the shield are probably to "justify" the shield growing bigger in gameplay to cover more area.
It doesn't really make sense for them imo, and it'd run into getting too similar to how Jayce and Nidalee play
Im not sure if Cloak is supposed to be Growth or Decay but he looks like he'd be the final boss of some weird mushroom based game
I haven't gotten to the psylocke section yet but, Psylocke's look in this game is based on the demon days comics! And Luna Snow was an OC created for marvel future fight, a marvel mobile game. She then got her own comic book with a few of the other original characters in that game, and now she's in here!

I came to look at character art and left pleasantly surprised with the commentary on sexualisation

God, I hope Jean Grey makes it to the game. Her costume designing is always a point of interest and confusion.
her ult being the phoenix force would be so cool
You'll be pleased to know that parts of her has been found in the files. Sure, it may take time for her to be added, but it'll happen in due time.
Or Bastion and Nightcrawler.
I imagine Jean grey will likely have her classic outfit, the clone of her that became goblin queen, her old ms marvel outfit, and phoenix. Nightcrawler might have himself, his pirate version, his evil dad, and maybe even a referance to his preist phase.
I hope to see X men Red inspired one but almost all of hers are iconic and great in their own way
But I think she'll be in the green pheonix one by default
Captain America in the game runs around that’s basically his whole kit and that’s why his select animation is those fast after effects. The pants and boots make sense to me taken that he doesn’t need armor to run around if anything it’d get in his way and since he’s lunging forward at the enemy head first his torso would need that protection. The boots of course helping him run faster or something like that. I’m assuming the gauntlets are all to show us they power up his shield he clenches his fist when he activates his abilities.

MAKE A COMPLETE MARVEL RIVALS MINISERIES AND MY LIFE IS YOURS
Guardians of the galaxy 3 is unironically the best movie of the mcu, holy shit there are some scenes in there that hits you in the feels
One of the best super heroes movies, probably the best marvel movie, definitely the best mcu movie
@knotknight514 it and black panther wakanda forever are top 3 for me
One of James Gunn best media projects.

Love how everyone thinks that the characters should look from movies and see what they ACTUALLY look like.
Most people assume "sexy" and "sexualization" are the same thing. So I appreciate you expounding on the subject. Awesome video in general! Keep it up.
For the Growth and Decay skin, you brought up the start of it being less impactful, but I think that's the point? Like, its telling the story of this version of the characters. Two opposing forces existing in the same world, but separate; then they meet, and eventually come together as a single unit.
