I think it's the camera shake and sound design. You can viscerally FEEL the worm, and the fact that it's coming for you.

Looks like it, even the title screen resembles Prefection's in the 4th(?) movie where the towns name was scratched out and Rejection was written in... If I remember right.

My Gods that was terrifying to watch, I've got absolutely no interest in playing that!
But watching the gameplay was nerve-wracking as a horror game...
This is giving me traumatic flashbacks to after I first watched Tremors as a small, impressionable child. This is basically what I was expecting to happen to me all the time

no one seems to figure out immediately that you can stand still on the sand and be fine, no need to stand on boxes or rocks or whatever
