He was indeed Sikh. You may read the book "Jail Chitthiyaan" by Bhai Randhir Singh who was also a freedom fighter. He was the person whom Shahid Bhagat Singh wanted to meet while in prison. You will get to know the truth. Yes Bhagat Singh was an atheist for 4 years, but at the time of his martyrdom he had again become a theist. "Why I am an atheist" was written by him before this meeting with Bhai Randhir Singh.
And this is all if we give the discount of accepting that he did write the article which is highly doubt-worthy. I say so because he was classified as a terrorist and NOT a political prisoner (for bombing parliament and killing Saunders). Inmates classified as terrorists were NOT given writing material and other facilities that were given to political prisoners, so how could he have been able to write in the first place?

Also, Why I'm an atheist is laden with FACTUAL FALLACIES. For example, it states that Bhagat Singh's father was Arya Samaji (LOL). In reality he was not just a Sikh, but a Khalsa (amritdhari Sikh). This is evident from the autobiography of freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh (Bhagat Singh's uncle) in which he states that he with his brother (Bhagat Singh's father) had undergone the Sikh baptism ceremony called Amrit Sanchar at Anandpur Sahib. So how can Bhagat Singh's father be Arya Samaji when he is in fact an Amritdhari Sikh? This is a classic Hindu supremacist right-wing type of proaganda trying to undermine the Sikh sovereign identity by trying to doctrine our history, since it is also the fact is that Why I'm an Atheist was published in "The People" which was of Lala Lajpat Rai, who was linked with Savarkar who we all know basically is the father of the poisonous Hindu Rashtra ideology.
And it's been a modus operandi of the RSS to dilute or distort the history and scriptures of the Sikhs in order to make us weak. (Not to mention they also target all minorities and dalits) Since it's full of cowards who can't grow a pair and need such low actions to achieve their even lower motives.
