You’re the real deal mate. I can see you’ve worked your ass off to get where you are now, which is what it takes to have a good crack at this industry 🤙🚁
How do pilots record their hours for resume sake, do you record the time spent waiting as flying time? How is it ensured that you never lie about the amount of hours and do some pilots lie about their hours, how does this all work? This video is great btw
Pilots record time in the air in tenths of hours. Time spent waiting is only covered by the daily rate or salary. Some pilots have lied about there hours and it shows in their skills. They can be audited and checked against aircraft logbooks if someone really wanted to check but in general its usually all based on honesty and their personal logbooks. Glad you like the video!
Great video. You have a cool job. One question I have - do you increase the engine torque when landing/below a certain speed? When you reduce the collective doesn’t that decrease the torque? I have noticed that when some pilots land their engine torque is up to 80% Are they manually increasing the throttle? I am trying to avoid hard helicopter landings on my flight sim game.
The engine correlator increases power when the collective is raised automatically. The heavier you are the more power you need to slow your rate of descent and then to hover. You need more power to hover weighing 5000lbs than if you weighed 4000lbs.
@@PilotTeacher thanks! I’m surprised that when increasing the engine torque near to landing you don’t start taking off again. I would love it if there was a step-by-step guide to landing a helicopter. I suppose it’s all a matter of practice.
@@nickmaguire5104 you would if you kept on raising the collective. Its like slowing down on an uphill in your car. Imagine you are driving to a T-junction at the top of a hill. You let off the accelerator to slow down but then you need to prevent the car from rolling back down the hill while waiting to pull out onto the road. The helicopter is just the same. Have you seen this video: th-cam.com/video/YBzkJkmcNWg/w-d-xo.html
@@nickmaguire5104 youbetchya! If you google a helicopter ‘power required curve’ and look at the image you will see that as a helicopter slows down it will require more power than at cruise.
Nope, this was a full day of flying on a 2 week project. Everyday was like this and we were overnighting over 100nm away. During the day I would drop them into a site where they would be for an hour and fly to the nearest airport to get fuel. I then came back, picked them up and bumped them to their next spot. Rinse and repeat as needed.
1) Your backyard must be prestine - no dog/people toys, no rocks/sticks, no tools hanging on the grill; 2) Aren't there super-wide, full-skid pads or floats that you could use for wet land landings? It seems like the cost of something like that would be less than the fuel for moving the aircraft around?
There are floats for these aircraft but the cost in our time to change them over is not worth it when the customer is willing to pay the fuel bill. I was only parking minutes away for the spots to wet to shutdown at so the cost was negligible compared to the total cost of the job.
What do you think on people wearing hats near or under the rotor wash? I always had bad feelings toward this issue. In this job everything is so expensive that I really would not like to have a loose hat fly around… Am I overreacting?🤔
If any of my customers have hats I always tell them in the preflight briefing to remove them and hold them or place them in their jacket or bag if they will be entering or exiting the helicopter while rotors are running. A loose hat striking the rotor blades, swashplate, tail rotor or becoming stuck on any part of the helicopter can lead to a dangerous situation.
I have duel citizenship for canada and the uk and currently live in the uk, what is the job market for heli pilots in canada right now? Is it even worth doing the training over there compared to here in the uk? Thanks.
There is a but just be warned that getting that first job can be hard and involve driving alot of miles knocking on doors and trying to get that first break.
This not the license who is hard to get, but the FIRST job!...And specially you have to be available and ready to go anywhere... I went to the other side of the world to get my first helicopter job...
This ship has an empty weight of just under 3000 lbs. Its max internal gross weight is 4961 lbs so its useful load for fuel, passengers, pilot and cargo is 1961 lbs. If I was was to fly something via a sling load on its hook the max external gross weight is 5512 lbs thus its useful load would then be 2512 lbs

Dream job... 😊 I like the AS350 A-Star a lot. Beautiful heli... Enjoy flying with her... 🙂
Hope all is well Rick. Been doing much flying mate? We’re all keen for another vid from you soon. Looking forward to it. 🤙🚁
Next video is Tee’d up to come out next Tuesday!
Now that’s cool, getting to do your job (the Archeologists) and fly in a helicopter too!
Ive learned so much about stuff I had no idea about from the people I’ve flown.
Thanks for the flight, I fly along with you ( in my mine ) and do all the flight controls just watching you.
Cool!! You should set youself up a simulator and come fly with me:
