- Living on a Narrowboat and exploring England’s Canals. We are Paul & Anthony and together with our dog Dexter we live onboard a narrowboat and cruise the canals of the UK.
It's our first time taking our Narrowboat onto a river. We have been a little apprehensive, but will we enjoy it? After leaving the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and now the Huddersfield Broad Canal, we head to Wakefield and on towards Leeds and have to travel via the Calder and Hebble. Exploring England’s canals on our 57’ Narrowboat

A Lancashire couple and our dog who are just starting out on this incredible journey around England and Wales on our new 57’ Narrowboat Home. Hi you two. I've tried twice to comment on this weeks vlog but the internet was pants at times on the caravan site we stayed on but we came home today so i'm trying again. I think you handled the river just fine, your confidence shone through. Missed Dexter but i know he was inside the boat keeping safe.
It was lovely seeing you on 4 Go Narrowboating on tuesday, i was worried i wouldn't be able to watch it with the bad signal on site but it weren't too bad, and i also watched you Paul on Meaningful conversation and its a great new channel and i'll be tuning in on weds.

There you are still cruising around where I grew up. Looking forward to Wakefield. My Mom used to take me shopping there when I was a kid and then, on visits home, we would always go the the new "Mall" which sadly now has seen better days. Maybe on the next leg we still might see Castle Hill and Emily Moor tower...ya never know!! Freak storm here today, they say the worst we have seen in a century, winds up to 80-100kms....batten down the hatches!!Love and hugs to you three.

Love this cruise, I live in Wakefield and not far from Stanley Ferry. The Calder has played. Big part on my life. Lovely to see the river from another angle

Another great vlog! I love the intro, and that was a great shot of Anthony in front of the fire. It was nice being on the river, nice and wide, can see the other boats passing, is lovely. That last bridge you had to turn to go under was a bit nerve wracking. That is a lovely location for a pub.
Great vlog today, but I suppose I am a bit biased, Mirfield is my home town and the Pear Tree one of my old locals. I’m moving back there in 4 weeks with my wife Vicki after 34 years in Australia, can’t wait to be back in the homeland, might catch up with you guys on the canals. Ps loved the scenes on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, I grew up as a kid in Linthwaite close to Slawit and always used to play and fish down by the canal 👍👍

I loved the way the rippled water reflected on the bridge after that turn to the left at the start of the video! Rivers look like a lot of fun, as if the boat was released from being on a leash and could now sprint about and even run up alongside others. I also loved that funny little marina in the midst of all the apartments, as if it were a boat village. Thanks again for sharing a little window into your world. Have a wonderful week.
They used to build and sideways launch wooden barges from that little boat yard. The barges carried coal and some carried Barley for the brewing industry in the town.

Hi Paul, Anthony and the lovable Dexter.
At last you reached my home town of Mirfield.
The video of you leaving the canal and entering the River Calder at the start of the vlog was, in my opinion, the best you have ever taken. The light and ripple effect on the underneath of the river bridges was ethereal and the music fitted perfectly.
Then you re-entered the canal at Battyeford Flood Lock.
From here to where you ended the vlog, and later when I met you at Greenwood Lock is my regular canal walk.
I often eat at the Pear Tree Inn where you bravely moored overnight. It is good food and ale there.
As you cruise downriver, you pass two large metal objects in the middle of the river. This used to support a cross over bridge for horses pulling barges. It is known locally as Titanic's Funnels as it rembles a sunken ship's funnels. There is a geocache placed on it and a soft toy, only accessible by boat.
As you re-enter the canal system at Ledgard Bridge, that is Mirfield town centre and as you can see, the Bridges are festooned with flower boxes as is the town centre and every street sign within the town. All provided and looked after by volunteer townsfolk as part of Mirfield in Bloom. Love where you live.
There are lots of nice shops in Mirfield other than Lidl.
I spotted you just leaving Shepley Bridge Lock and heading out onto the Calder where the weir is and caught up with you at Greenwood lock.

Was lovely to meet you when we were there and seems an age ago. We have lost some of the footage on the rivers. No idea where it has gone. Paul is devastated. If we find it by some miracle, we may have to do a bonus vlog with that in.

Michael, I live in Mirfield, West Yorkshire where this video was filmed. All the canal and river bridges are festooned with flowering plants as are building and all street signs within the town.
These are planted and maintained by local residents who volunteer to do it for free. Mirfield in Bloom love where you live. Local residents even came together to repaint a rusty bridge railings because the Rivers Trust wouldn't do it.

All the boats looked like they were moving along at top speed. You can probably get away with (and need) to build up some speed while on the river….

Wow, the freedom (and space) of the river is lovely. I could get very used to that too! There's something about being on a river that seems so calm too. Especially the ones that aren't too wide or have too vigorous of a current....really enjoyed the vlog. But I guess the water levels and currents are way more unpredictable on a river than a canal which would make continuous cruising on them hairy....lol.. You left us on sort of a cliff hanger again! LOL! 🍁

One day it's calm and still, and on other days there are actual whitecaps! Can't imagine being on a NB during the latter. That would be scary!... We also have frequent Spring flooding, but once the levels stabilize, I always thought about how great it would be to cruise....beautiful stretch of water...and we even have a massive lock that takes you through up to Lake Winnipeg...(but I would NOT go into the lake with a NB! lol)

OK a podcast, yes, I put earphones in when I go to bed and play crime podcasts, so yeah narrowboat podcasts, I like that but part of the good thing of the vlogs are the sounds, people who have been on a narrowboat and loved it also love the engine sounds, the bird sounds even the rain sounds etc, that would be hard to put on a podcast. But yeah I’ll listen to a podcast, I’m watching the spot.

Here’s one for you both! While away this week we had 7hrs of gale force winds hitting the caravan side on! Making it impossible to sleep. Have you experienced anything like this. It’s great to hear your still getting complements on the colour of morning star. Antony once again your honesty shines through.
Wow that sounds horrendous. We still have nights with little sleep, sometimes it’s the weather, sometimes it’s the ducks, but we love our boat still. Anthony is very honest 🤣
Hey John. We have experienced this. The fenders bang on the boat too making it sound like someone is breaking in 😂. I am a bit of an insomniac anyway. We love that people still like the boat.

Hi Paul and Anthony, A Lovely opening to this weeks Vlog. A bit of background music as well. Well done Navigating on the Rivers. Can you feel any pull on the boat due to currents, and were they tidal at all. Hope Paul's Life Vest is sorted very quickly. Do you need a VHF radio on these Rivers? Good to see Dexter supervising Paul on the Locks, still frighteningly close to the edge, but he's a clever and wise old Doggy and knows how far he can walk. That mooring by the pub looked very dodgy (to step on). Hope you managed to find a fuel station. Beautiful scenery on your cruise. Wishing you both a very safe week. Take care.

There is a current and you really have to open the boat up to get some momentum. Don’t think it was tidal. I guess that is another thing we will eventually need to tackle. Dont think you need a VHF radio on this type of river but could be wrong. I am always concerned when Dexter gets so close to the edge but he is sensible bless him. Have a great week. Take care ❤️
Liked the first few shots, although more industrial, the row of bridges looked interesting. The night shot looked a little eerie. You seemed to have a more relaxed trip this week.

Most enjoyable there seems to be a few boaters heading for rivers nice to see the scenery it is a bit different from canals but I do like the towpaths and little towns but keep safe

Glad you enjoyed the river. Like you, I was nervous about going on rivers at first, but, as long as you keep an eye on the weather forecasts and pick your times for cruising, they’re not scary at all. The boats seem to like the deeper water and so move a tad faster. The only thing that I struggled with in some places on the rivers that we’ve been on, was getting on and off the back of the boat where the lock landings and some quay sides were quite high. I’m not very agile these days, so had to dig a Caravan step out to help me. Getting the dog off and on was challenging sometimes too for the same reason.
We were really surprised how much we enjoyed the rivers. I guess that’s the only thing about rivers, less moorings and no towpath. We were happy to get back into the canals but excited to do rivers again xx

Are rivers dredged to remove big rocks ? Here river bottoms are quite uneven, varying in depth and rocky outcrops jutting up, I often wonder how you can just cruise along rivers there. I realize narrowboats do well with shallower draft but I’d be worrying about ROCKS! My family had a power cruiser and then a sailboat when I was growing up and we were visiting a place we weren’t used to one time. We were inside a harbour that had been enclosed , except an entrance to let boats come and go, with huge rock piles to help cut down on storm waters surging in. We’d dropped anchor the night before , as well as a couple other boats we were cruising with , and had a few drinks that evening. As we began to wake up my dad started to say we should get up to “ROCKS” 🤣😂. We’d dragged anchor in the night and all you could see out the bedroom porthole was huge big rocks. Fortunately we were in time to get her away before she crashed but another few minutes and we’d have had big problems . I still chuckle at everyone tearing out of bed, running with wild bed head to get her underway, grab boat hooks and pull the anchor , I’m sure we were quite entertaining to the old guys sitting on the dock to watch . They might have let us know we were in trouble but they figured it was our fault I guess. Lol that didn’t happen again , you can be sure, Dad didn’t like looking inexperienced even though he was at the time. Happy cruising🥰🙋🏼♀️

I did enjoy that one guy's, even I could see the difference when you went on to the river, I do like to earwig when you are chatting and calling out to other boaters and people on the towpath it feels so friendly. I noticed that you said that the signs are quite small and hard to see, have you got a pair of binoculars? If not I have a decent pair if you want them, I hardly ever use them. Lovely relaxing cruise and the rivers are just as beautiful. When you are cruising you use short blasts of the engine in certain situations. . . What does that do. . . Sorry but as a non boater I'm curious. Have a great weekend guys and see you next time.
Thanks Mark. We loved the rivers. The short blasts of the engine whilst the tiller is over to one side moves the bow without driving the boat forward so is good for corrective manoeuvres (similar to using the bow thruster). We also use it to moor up. Glad you enjoyed the vlog. Take care ❤️

Rivers are a totally different experience to man-built canals. No towpaths to wander along; mooring (mostly) at designated places - although the brave can wild moor; cruising further and mooring up for less time although more often in lovely isolated places; much wider and more scary if the wind is blowing strong! So glad you both enjoyed the new experience. I would have been very wary of stepping off onto that mooring by the pub though! Good vlog guys.

That Jetty was a bit dodgy by the pub but we had a really good nights sleep there to be honest.

Hi Bill we are still on the cut but have managed to secure a mooring for December. We have two Jerry cans for fuel and they come in very handy. The weather while doing the rivers was beautiful. We managed to get fuel shortly after this video. Take care 👍

Hey Bill. We loved the rivers. We won’t be getting to our original marina and currently still out on the cut. The weather definitely has changed and the fire seems almost continually lit now.
We do have a Jerry can and because of the car we don’t keep it full of fuel on the boat as it is easy enough to take it in the car to fill.

We discovered that you can’t always follow a path along the rivers and then because it was over 7 miles we got an Uber back to the car 👍

Hiya, can I ask a question? I have done many hours, miles & locks at the helm of our narrowboat but I’ve never heard anyone ‘pulsing’ the revs when manoeuvring. Is this something that you have been taught or something you have learned to do yourself? Does it help?
It was something we learned on our helmsman training, we find it helpful when manoeuvring and it’s come in handy now our bow thrusters have stopped working
Hey Heather. We were taught it mainly for mooring but it allows adjustment of the bow without a forward motion of the boat so is great for manoeuvring in tight locks etc. Also good if you don’t have bow thrusters (ours aren’t currently working 😬). Have a great week. Take care ❤️
