    I was a full grown adult when I learnt sapphire isn't only blue, which is funny because its my birthstone but I never liked the deep navy blue sapphire you see everywhere. I don't like pink either but this is still very beautiful, you have cut it into a vibrant stunning gem and made pink classy, great work my friend 👍🏼🌟

      Hi Tripping on Rocks, I like the pink and lilac gems. Like you not a huge fan of the real dark blues, but a light sky blue makes for a beautiful gem.

    Great work as usual, That cut was my first "successful gem" (after many attempts and watching all your video's). I've done many gems since, but the first success is always special.I only used smokey quartz, I might revisit that design in something more colourful like yours, it's a very beautiful gem, look forward to your next video.

      Hi Ricky, yep another tiny one 5mm is still a lot bigger than the 3mm garnet. From memory you set gems. Is a Trillion difficult to set in a ring? Cheers Cliff

    • @FatKidBrody
      @FatKidBrody 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are a little tougher to set of course it depends on the setting too. Believe this or not I have a harder time with marquis. I dislike setting marquis. lol

    Beautiful result especially when the rough did not look all that promising, you retained more of the gem than I expected.
    I don't facet but if I did, my result would have been a grain of sand.

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul, The rough gem produced quite a nice gem with minimal loss. Often there are issues when faceting, but with this gem it was smooth sailing all the way. Regards Cliff

    Hi Cliff! This is so very very helpful to me! I have so many tiny 1-2ct spinels right now, and when they came in I got so worried I wouldn't be able to do anything with them because of their size. Which is irritating because I'm sure you know how expensive spinel is these days. Thank you so much for doing this video!

      Hi Tim, it was a great return. The rough gem was perfectly shaped for this design. Also, there was a low crown and a shallow pavilion in this design which was perfect. If I faceted SRB it would have been a 3mm gem.

    That colour really came out amazingly in the end, beautiful work! Couldn't have guessed it'd be that pretty, just looking at the rough at the start.
    Do you ever cut more or less opaque corundums/sapphires? Would you be able to get a "star" to show from an opaque gem? I've mined some beautiful corundums in Finland, and I am super curious about how they might look.
    Some day, I'm going to learn this craft too. Thanks for always being a wonderful inspiration!

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I usually don't facet less opaque gems as I like scintillation in gems . Hopefully one day you will get the chance to learn to facet.

    Wow! I can't believe I missed the notification that you posted the video. What a beauty. A sweet tiny little gem. I can't believe how beautiful this Sapphire turned out. As I was watching I kept thinking it was going to be heavily included and kept wondering if I could cut something so tiny. It was cool to see the Trillion cut come together. I have to try one now 🙃. I love the color and how it is both soft and bright and sparkly. It would look great in a setting. It looks delicate but Sapphires are so strong. How well would this hold up in a ring setting? It's points on the corners would have to be supported in the setting I would imagine.
    Wonderful gem Cliff. Good job Jaws in helping to fetch that Sapphire.

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Tam. This gem has no inclusion. This is a great design. So many Trillions about, I would facet this again and again.

  • @SnowTiger45
    @SnowTiger45 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would LOVE to be able to work on some Sapphire but it's hard to source affordably. But I am considering contacting "your friend" from Tim's Adventures.
    Another thing I'd love is the ability to work with such tiny gems. I have an old Graves Mk 1 faceting machine that needs Spindle Bearings to reduce slop but I don't have small enough Dop Sticks to cut anything less than around 7mm dia. Unfortunately, this means most of the rough I find (of fine gems) is too small for my setup. What a shame.

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sapphire is always expensive. In my opinion a bit of a overpay as there is so much 1-3 carat sapphires around. I reckon Zircon is better.

    • @SnowTiger45
      @SnowTiger45 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VintageTimeGems I love cutting Zircon. It is a tremendously, scintillating gemstone. I have cut a few and hope to cut many more very soon. That said, I have since ordered a brand new Ultra-Tec "VL Classic Faceting Machine (Digital)" which should arrive in 6 more weeks (ships on Sept. 23rd, 2023) and just ordered my first two genuine (Umba) Sapphires. One is a Pink and one is Purple. They are both very small but I also ordered several tiny dops for tiny stones. I intend to practice cutting tiny gemstones using less expensive rough including Lab-Made Sapphire until I get my technique perfected using this new faceting machine.
      Thank You Cliff for all your inspiration. I essentially learned how to facet by watching your videos (and some others). I live in an area where there are no other facetors to learn from so You and U-Toob have been my instructors.
      Keep up your fantastic work and videos. I look forward to seeing many more. I have watched every video you have uploaded and will continue to do the same. Take good care Friend. 😊

    The orange peel effect, is caused by sapphires that have been heat treated at very high temperatures. When you polish heat treated sapphires, you can often get the orange peel effect.

Obviously to me do you simply cut the angles and guess the centre or.... also the depth of the stone, does that make a difference?Thanks in advance Cliff
