    *GUYS* this is important! Apple released a new version of Final Cut Pro today (Nov 15, 2018). You can now BURN IN your captions, so the text is in the video itself, not just a sidecar file. Update now to get this feature! I will have a new TidBytes demo of this new version soon. Stick around…

    Nice to see videos that are already out about how to do Closed Captions in Final Cut Pro, and double so when they're closed captioned too! One thing you want to watch for is when you have closed captions overlapping or blocking on-screen information, such as at the 54-second mark.

    Using various ways now for a couple of months, but I returned to using TITLES. So I make a single title that looks awesome, nice font, decent shadow instead of ugly boxes, use the option-drag to copy it throughout the video, just like with the closed caption option, and then edit and match them to the audio track. It's basically as fast as the new caption option, with one main difference: it looks good!. So no need to go 10.4 for captions, the previous way of doing things is just as good.
    In case I need closed captions, I just export to FCPXML, and parse that file to a SRT file in 2 clicks and hide the Title role to disable hard baking the captions. So I can still use it for closed captions as well.

    What if...I share (or export) my project as an apple device output and I airdrop the video to my phone, Which of the two options (embed captions, separate file) allows my captions or subtitles to automatically be shown on my video? I am unaware of a toggle or switch to hit when watching videos on my phone that turns captions on/off. I want my subtitles to already be on the video, is the only way for this to happen, is to just manually do the subtitles as a overlay via text layers and generator backgrounds?

      Remember, these are closed captions, not open captions. The editing styles for CC's are limited because different media players will render them differently. Facebook renders text different from TH-cam, and do on. If you want open captions, you’ll need a plug-in.

    • @ComputerClan
      @ComputerClan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The solution you're looking for is "open captions". Final Cut Pro currently does not have that feature built in. There are plug-ins for this: fxfactory.com/info/subtitles/
      I haven't used that particular plug-in, but it looks like it'd provide the solution you're looking for. Another commenter suggested this (which I think they created themselves): www.spherico.com/filmtools/TitleExchange/XTCC/index.html - I haven't vetted this. I don't know how well it works.

      @jtusmc0311 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ComputerClan true, but in a world where majority of people use their smart phones / social media it would be nice to be able to modify the size. wouldn't be that difficult to at least give us the option because as it stands now the CC looks very small already on many smartphones.

    • @ComputerClan
      @ComputerClan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That issue lies with the creators of the social media platforms, not Final Cut Pro. If you want to burn in your own captions, please create your own titles or use a plug-in which generates open captions.

    • @jtusmc0311
      @jtusmc0311 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Computer Clan wouldn’t say it lies with the creators of social media. What I’m saying is the CC feature that is built into FCP; would be nice to be able to adjust the size of the CC. I used social media as an example but those developers have nothing to do with FCP.
      CC shouldn’t be restrictive to just 1 default size.

    • @ComputerClan
      @ComputerClan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again, this is not a Final Cut issue. Closed caption standards are the way they are. They date waaaay back. Again, if you want more flexibility with burned in titles, please use a plug-in that generates open captions, or make your own titles.

      Use the inspector to change the position of .scc captions. You can also change display style, and some formatting options. Keep in mind, you cannot change the font because the fonts are rendered differently in different media players. If someone watches your video with the TH-cam captions on, TH-cam will render the text differently than Facebook, for example.

    • @ComputerClan

      No. The closed caption's visibility is controlled by the user's playback software. For example, QuickTime may display closed captions differently than VLC or TH-cam.

    is it possible to change the font of the captions?

    • @ComputerClan

      You may be thinking of ‘open’ captions. Closed captions are read different depending on the program you’re watching the video in. This is why the appearance settings are more limited.
      Open captions are burned into the video. Since they’re burned in, you can make them look however you’d like.

    If we want to use the service rev.com for iMovie not Final Cut Pro, first of all is it possible? Second of all what file format what I need to use?

    • @ComputerClan
      @ComputerClan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      iMovie, at this point, does NOT support closed captions. Rev.com files will not work with iMovie. You may create titles and manually write the text, but that is a time-consuming process.

    • @nelsonbelson4849
      @nelsonbelson4849 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Computer Clan you’re right... I think I’m going to use that rev service and just send the video via TH-cam and receive it via TH-cam, download that TH-cam video and then edit it onto iMovie with the rest of the project (only one section needed captions) it’s cool that the service has a 24 hour turnaround because I need to add captions for a project by Saturday :)

    • @ComputerClan
      @ComputerClan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Downloading a TH-cam video will NOT supply caption data. Remember, closed captions are a NOT burned into a video. The text does not render into the video, unless you use a feature that specifically burns in the text. Final Cut Pro X has this feature. Normally, the closed caption data is a sidecar file that is toggled by the viewer during video playback (e.g. on TH-cam).
      However… if your video is only being played on TH-cam, you can simply keep the Rev captions in the TH-cam player, and allow the viewer to turn them on and off.

    • @nelsonbelson4849
      @nelsonbelson4849 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait I’m confused... are captions the same as subtitles ? I don’t have Final Cut Pro x at the moment ... and so I’m using iMovie to edit a 12 minute long video which about 3 minutes of an interview needs subtitles ... is there any way to request them to embed the subtitles into the edit over at rev?? I’m really confused as to what the best option is ... also one reason I haven’t bought Final Cut Pro is because I feel that my computer is about to die and I was wondering if I bought a new MacBook, would I have to pay for it again ??

    • @nelsonbelson4849
      @nelsonbelson4849 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Computer Clan another thing, what if I sent them the whole 12 minute video via TH-cam and specify which part I would like captioned, and then have them send it back via TH-cam so that when I show it , there won’t be transcription error? Or worse comes to worse , they add captions to the entire 12 minute video

    • @ComputerClan
      @ComputerClan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Remember, the font DOES NOT MATTER. These are CLOSED captions, not open captions. Closed captions are bits of data that travel with a video file. They are NOT burned in text. Closed captions will look different in different software. VLC will display captions different than TH-cam. It’s not Apple's fault. That’s how the standard is.
