@@jasonbornne7767, He's worried about spending the $1100 and the opportunity cost on not working the 77 hours. Sounds like they only have $1500 a month they are paying on debt... so the trip will likely reduce their income by at least $1000 and cost $1100.
It will put them behind for a month and a half.

It's pretty simple to minimize the lose. I grew up poor and anytime we went to like a family reunion or camping we always left after the parents got off work. Just drive through the night then do the same on the way home. Still get basically just as much time on vacation, save 2 work days, less traffic and bonus the kids sleep in the car so not as many stops.

@@Chad-qe6yv, Exactly! I do the same thing. We leave at 4-5 p.m.
I drive overnight. 14 hour drive. I only stop for gas. Wife, kids, dog, all sleeping. Have to keep an eye out for wildlife like deer, etc. until 1 or 2 am then everything is bedded down, no traffic. When we get to the destination around 7 or 8 am I'm spent and take a nap for a few hours.
If we drive through the day and it's easily a 16 hour drive, stopping for food, bathroom breaks, other things.
Everyone wants snacks at every gas stop which cost as much as the gas. If you're broke you gotta say no and be the bad guy.
When the goal is to get there. I'll take driving overnight every time.

But he is definitely making minimum wage. It's not like he couldn't find something better. If you are working 75 hours a week, you better be making at least 200k a year to make it worth it. I took my older sister and my niece on a two-week European vacation 15 years ago for my sister's 40th birthday and paid for everything. She divorced a few years prior and her ex husband was a deadbeat dad. She was working 2 part-time jobs for $8/hr and $9/hr and barely scraping by. She had no paid time off and I knew the "free" vacation would still be a burden, so I also bought her a digital camera and gave her $700 cash to cover the lost income. Hint to Thomas' dad, if you're watching and can swing it.
