- From the Film Australia Collection. Made by The Cinema and Photographic Branch 1934. A documentary made to promote Canberra A.C.T. It includes images of the opening of the first Australian Federal Parliament by the Duke and Duchess of York. From sheep paddock to Federal Capital the film claims that not only is Canberra the most beautiful modern city in the world with gardens that would outshine those of the ancient Roman villas but it is also Australia's centre of learning and culture.

Hi Jason
Yes we do have some Canberra films from later times and will be posting them this year as Canberra celebrates its centenary.
Canberra, an Arcadia where, as the film says, "nymphs and fauns gaily trip through the gardens". Sounds like nothing much has changed since then! Thank you for another interesting documentary from the archives. Cheerio.
Canberra in 1934 - lovely film.
However a wonderful look at the dawn of a City. Keep these movies coming please !
Canberra was taken from the language of the local indigenous people of that area. It means meeting place.
Great film clip - lots of different cars that give a bit of an insight into what was on the road then. It was Interesting to see a bike hitching a ride on the bus at 5:13 and no helmet! Imagine the outcry from health and safety numpties today!
Thanks for posting all these old films. Keep it up.
Thanks for the suggestion Milton. We do have a great film about Geelong coming up.
At 5:14 , a cyclist can be seen "skate-hitching" on one of the Federal Capital's many omnibuses...the free and easy lifestyle, indeed!
Thank you. I look forward to having a look.
A very nice video.
I love the architecture of Canberra's buildings. Where did the name Canberra come from?
You're welcome. The more things change the more they stay the same perhaps!
now ain't that the truth
Can anyone help find a video of JOHN KERR at a demonstration in his black FORD LTD?
I've heard of people stating how boring Canberra is. I'd still like to visit.
Are there more recent videos of Canberra? Something from the 1970s or 1980s?
Ah! That sounds appropriate for the Australian capital.
that my teacher miss royce vagg
LOL - I've lived there many years - the most depressing city in Australia. At least it was safe...
im adut
Nymphs and sprites he says!! No just a bunch of lazy public servants.
And yes, Canberra is the MOST boring City in Australia.
An old politician said: 'Canberra is good sheep station spoiled' !
Nonsense. I grew up in Canberra and still have family there. It's NOT a boring city at all!
