Ah yes, the forgotten child of Anastasia and Treasure Planet. I love it. Also I always liked how, at the end, the ice crystals are the ones who make the oceans. It's a little detail but adds some realism to the sequence.
I'm so glad that this film is getting more exposure. Its 21 years old now and people are still just finding it. It's an amazing animated film. The characters are interesting, the humor hits right, the relationships are great and the sci-fi aspects are incredible. Not to mention the animation is spectacular. Its marketing is what destroyed it. The trailer for this portrayed it as a simple kids film about saving the human race but it's much deeper, darker and more complex. It should be more known and praised.
That and Fox just kind of shit on it in general. I loved it as a kid but I've only met a few people who've seen it; let alone even heard of it. The book is even better
This movie is a guilty pleasure, such a shame it didn't get enough love from Critics and The Box Office. This was the last hand drawn Animated Movie from Fox Animation Studios. They were located in my hometown of Phoenix Arizona. I love this movie, been hoping to get it on BLU Ray soon.
@@CannonRaw And if you watch those old “Get into it” DVD ads, they go through downright impressive lengths to hide the fact that it’s a fully animated feature.
The thing they never say outright in the movie is that the Titan is why the Drej destroyed Earth - the technology of converting energy to matter is the one thing that beats the Drej (who were pretty much the galaxy's version of imperialist humans). So of course they tried to eradicate us. Imagine if someone had handed a modern Nimitz carrier to the people of any nation being colonized in the 1800's...
They actually do say it. Not in the scene with Akima but it is mentioned very briefly that Titan is why they targeted, they just didn't explain why the ship made us a target. As a kid I always thought it was simply they were surprised we were smart enough to make it and then just saw us a threat generally as opposed to the specific reason they feared the tech.
Amazing that Don Bluth, maker of The Secret of NIMH, Dragon's Lair, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and Anastasia, would later make such a film as this.
Honestly, Titan AE was released in maybe the unluckiest time imaginable for a mostly-traditionally animated space opera. Traditional animated films were being eaten alive by their CGI equivalents. The big studios responded with very strange in hindsight solutions like “Maybe there’s still loads of songs but NONE of the characters sing” or “From now on, no more talking animals. Or maybe only SOME animals can talk, I don’t know?” In any case, the former helps explain some of Titan’s soundtrack which includes… some Choices… I’ve also always suspected that in the immediate wake of Star Wars Episode One, people might have been a little burnt out on space fantasies.
I believe the problem with this movie is that it felt rushed, I believe it could have worked better like a 12 or maybe 24 episodes series. For me I really loved it, this was really underrated.
There are aspects of it that feel like they’d be more at home and have more room to breathe in a Final Fantasy-esque RPG. Don Bluth worked on Dragon’s Lair after all; now I’d love to see him make another game.
OMG I CANT BELIEVE YOURE WATCHING THIS!!! Literally haven’t watched the video yet but omgggg Let me just say, Titan A.E walked so Treasure Planet could run. I love this movie so much!!
In the ice field, the guy in charge of sound effects stepped on some ice outside of his home and it made an awesome crunch noise. So he got his gear and made a bunch of recordings of him stepping/pressing his foot down onto ice sheets. I was obsessed with this movie when I was little and saw a tv spot that had a ton of behind the scenes stuff😅
I watched this movie for the first time this year, then was obsessed with it for like a week, Korso and Kale sounded so flirty in the finnish dub..Also fun fact, finnish dub Kale has Dimitri's voice actor, so he was even more of a twin. 😆
I don't think he was mad at his dad for dying, he was mad at his Dad for literally leaving when he could have escaped with Cale. Had he left with Cale and his friend, he would have survived and Cale wouldn't have grown up an orphan. Seeing the ship his Dad left to protect, what it could really do, understanding what it really meant, and most importantly, spending a little bit of time with other humans, the people it would help, I think that's when he understood the importance of that ship and finally really understood why it was so important that his Dad was willing to walk away and risk losing Cale forever. I agree though, the film's not perfect. I agree, I would have liked a little bit more development on the drej. Or the Goul (spelling?) those guys were so cool. I would have loved more of them.
with all the animated movies you’ve done commentary on recently i’m surprised you haven’t done the prince of egypt yet!!!! I’d love to see your thoughts on it, it’s another HIGHLY underrated dreamworks gem :)
Such a guilty pleasure movie. I remember watching the trailer as a kid. It kinda freaked me out. This might’ve been one of the first cartoon movies I ever saw where earth actually does get destroyed.
I was literally the ONLY kid I knew at school who saw this movie. The fact that the Earth is destroyed at the beginning of the movie really changed my perspective on things. Also, the soundtrack is soooo good! 20 years later and I still blast "Cosmic Castaway" at the gym.
One thing I learned to love about this film is that it implemented Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and MMA long before those became popular for their real world effectiveness in the movie's fightscenes.
this movie is such an oddity and i love that you're watching it! had it been live action it might have been really popular but the VFX would've looked very '90s and lame. animated, this film is great but it never seemed like it was meant for children and i think that's what threw people off and why it got so many bad reviews. when i first saw this movie as a kid i loved it, as an adult watching it I understand it's just a fun sci fi movie.
The term "colonizing" also applies if you were to settle an uninhabited planet. It doesn't have anything to do with taking from other people or killing them. It literally just means "to make a colony"
13:05 I agree. Also they're energy and alien but very clearly have the human capability for fear and animosity. I feel their otherness paired with such a petty and arguably relatable motivation is kind of a mismatch.
!!!! Another thing that I didn't say in my video is that if they used the drej to power the titan, isn't there a possibility of the drej taking over the titan from the inside? Since they're not a physical being and with energy transference, I feel like their consciousness could still exist whilst being inside the titan, which could've totally backfired on the humans completely 😂 I feel like if this was a live-action movie with sequels, that could've definitely been a route the writers would go down
I love that Akima is part of that meme I've seen a few times of all the asian girl characters in pop culture that were created with a dyed streak in their hair. It's funny at first but then just ridiculous with unoriginality. There are SO MANY.
The fact that this movie opens with the "War. War never changes" guy automatically makes it so cool. I remember seeing this as a kid and enjoying it, but I don't remember anything about it now.
Has one of the greatest openings of any movie. The slow build up of tension, a fantastic orchestral soundtrack culminating in the destruction of Earth is brilliant. Right up there with the opening of The Two Towers.
So glad for this! I loved this movie so much as a kid! And I've been obsessed with Akima's hairstyle for ages, I actually just got a haircut last week inspired by hers (with the long front pieces dyed purple and super short in the back). XD Great reaction!
oh man I love this one I’m glad you’re watching it. I saw this for the first time in theaters back in 2000 and I loved it back then and it still holds up. It’s a forgotten classic for sure
If I remember correctly this originally was meant to be a live-action film but which saw no progress despite an expensive early development, so the then chairman of Fox basically tossed the project to their animation department because of the success of Anastasia. It kind of helps explain why the film is something of a mess as it wasn't really something Don Bluth wanted to make in the first place and also was mired with production issues despite a high budget, as many of the animators was apparently laid off during production, forcing them to outsource much of the work. I'm almost surprised that the film still ended up pretty good considering the circumstances, although it did bomb horribly at the box office.
The plot holes in this movie are so obvious they're painful, but I can't help but really like this movie for being such an iconic time capsule of the tail end of the 20th century and having such awesome worldbuilding. Most of the soundtrack rocks pretty hard, too. 🤘 I wish more movies like this had been made. We could have entered a new golden age of 2D animation. Now we have movies like The Boss Baby being nominated for an Oscar and Seth Rogen voicing Donkey Kong. 😭 "Just call me Steal Yo Girl, Mario! Ehehehehehe!" I will never not imagine him as B.O.B. from Monsters vs. Aliens.
Such a slept on movie, but i love it!!! As another suggestion, Check out "Prince of Egypt". Probably the most criminally underrated animated film of all time but its Beautiful. I can tell you love a movie with a bomb ass soundtrack and it does not disappoint.
I can’t believe this was made by the same dude who made classic animated films featuring main characters that look like cereal mascots with silly, horror, and heartbreaking elements. Too bad this was his last.
The movie that sadly ended Don Bluth's career as a director for a long time. He's been trying to make a comeback for some time now (in his 70s btw), so here's to hoping we can see more of his work while he's still alive, even if it's just one more time.
Yes! Finally! I love love love this movie! I'm so glad you're watching it and that you agree with me that Cale looks just like Dimitri, lol. This was great! Thank you for taking the time to watch it, Sophia!
If I were to guess HOW exactly Titan created entire planet, from the scene alone I'd say probably it used all that energy to create a sort of gravity well, which drew all of the existing matter in that primal star system and it begun forming, even though the process was insanely fast going by cosmic scale of time when planets form :). Cale's father probably calculated the specific position and orbit to hide the Titan so the planet it would make would be in the exact spot for sustaining life and liquid water on the surface (all the materials were already there in the rings of Seherin as they were called in the movie, all the ice with enough water to fill oceans etc. all the solid matter for form rock and minerals, of course such a planet would require a lot of work to make it habitable (and it seems it took some time though it was fast forward in the film). Besides it's sci fi/on edge of fantasy, :).
On similar underrated animated films, I’d suggest the Black Cauldron. It’s def a Disney movie that some people might not know about, but I loved it as a kid. Now that I’m older, I def recognize that it’s not completely perfect (bc Disney was scared of being too dark so they worked to cut out scenes from the film), but it’s still very enjoyable and has some darker than the average Disney movie scenes. Without this unheard of cutting from a hand drawn animated movie (12 minutes from the film), it would’ve been Disney’s first film to get an R rating, but they reworked it to be PG. Sure, it has its flaws bc of this, but I think that has more to do with the Disney higher ups who really did it a disservice.
i was 13 when this film came out and i absolutely loved it as a young sci fi fan. It has aged both gracefully and terribly at the same time however. I still enjoy the film but theres no denying that it could have been soooo much more.
"I didn't know he literally meant make a planet" Yeah, thats why the Drej destroyed them. From what I remember of the novelization the Drej used a technology similar to the Titan to make themselves energy beings and became the top dogs in the universe. Eons pass and they forgot how to maintain their technology and life force and along comes humanity who starts to develop the same tech they used in ages passed to become godlike. And instead of asking humanity for help repairing their failing bodies and tech they just went crazy and assumed humanity was a threat and would use the tech to kill them. They doomed themselves because they were far too arrogant and paranoid to simply ask for help and I really wish they included this bit in the film because it would have made their destruction poetic. They feared that man would be their undoing and in their quest to prevent that, ensured that he would.
Titan AE has been one of my favourite movies since it first came out (I still have the VHS lol), and I had to buy the soundtrack twice because i wore the first CD out from listening too much, lol. I cant explain my attachment to this corny movie and its soundtrack. Also the song somewhere at the end "Like Lovers (Holding On)" is still one of my favorite songs, to this day.
This and the Iron Gigant are so underrated movies. I watched both so much but i still Love them, i don't know why but i never get this "i ve Seen it hadv enough" Feeling.
- Space adventure? Check - Roguish lead with daddy issues? Check - Searching for treasure? Check - Find a replacement father figure? Check - Replacement father figure betrays them? Check The Disney-Bluth rivalry lives on...
Omg Sophia STOP!!!! Between Treasure Planet and now Titan A.E you're bringing back my 8 year old self simping for the "misunderstood and angsty good-bad boy". Ruining my whole life and looking fabulous while doing it, cutie
I feel like you need to finish the trilogy of look a like male protagonist with don bluth's Thumbelina with the prince dude, also i love that movie haha. Catchy songs. i'm realizing the bluth was the unsung hero of my youth. I've watched all of his movies... and loved them !
i remember this movie! i missed it so much, I'm so glad you watched it! this one and the iron giant i simply adored. i only remembered the song from the credits but never knew the name
NO WAY THIS IS ONE OF THE MOVIES I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR MY WHOLE LIFE I just brushed it off multiple times because I swore the kid wasn't blonde (maybe confused him with the planet treasure guy) I remember 20:00 dialogue VIVIDLY Holy shit, I need to watch this again, can't believe I could've watched it so many times before, thank you Sophia, and thank you comment section that recommended this to her.
I love this movie... Saw it in theaters with my best friend, still have the DVD, soundtrack and a prequel comic. One day I will order all of the toys from eBay (yes there is a toyline) and all the books and comics (yes there was also a small Expanded Universe that added some details that were in the original script but left out of the movie).
Loved this movie! Gune is a treasure! I actually had a theory about the possibility the Drej aren't actually dead: ok so we know that the Titan converts energy into matter right? And they just used the Drej race to recreate earth right? So my thought is, what if the Drej aren't dead? that the Titan just changed them from energy to matter, and if their consciousness survived the process... yeah humanity is kinda screwed if they can take physical form or are able to manipulate the earth in any way. 👍 Granted I might be forgetting something but I just think there are horrific ramifications for this course of action. Great reaction! 😁
Holy shit, i am happy now, i am one of the comments that kept bring that up hahaha. Sorry i forgot my manners for a little bit, thanks for the video hehe
If you liked Titan A.E.'s gritter take on animated scifi, you should check out Heavy Metal (1981). This adult animated movie is named after the French and Canadian jointly produced magazine of the same name that incorporates scifi and fantasy artwork and stories for adults that included artwork from many famous artists. The movie had a trouble history, with many theaters refusing to show it due to its more adult content including graphic violence, sex and drug usage. It also took a long time to for it to be released onto home video due to various rights issues involving the soundtrack which featured many popular and prominent bands from the 70's and 80's. It's something of a cult classic, but it has inspired many later works like The Fifth Element, and I would believe even Titan A.E.
There is a running Bluth joke that he knows how to draw ONE MAN and he sticks with it because Dimitri/Cale look like the prince from Thumbelina 🤣
I was gonna say this exact thing lol
He also seems to be a fan of big baggy long sleeves (see: Secret of NIMH, Anastasia, An American Tail)
EXCUSE ME! He knew how to draw *TWO* MEN thank you very much (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
If glass jaw ain't glass why not.
and also the big guy who was with Dimitri, he re use him too
A LOT of worldbuilding got cut from this movie, as well as two scenes that make it flow a bit better. The DVD extras about it are very interesting.
worldbuilding lol
Yes, they do.
They really said "Copy/Paste" When it came to Cale's character design. He's just a blonde copy of Dimitri.
this and the iron giant were movies I LOVED as a kid but that no one seems to know exist
Yessss! These, also Quest for Camelot and Cats Don’t Dance are hidden gems that are dear to my heart 🥰
I would also love love loooove to see more The Iron Giant reactions 😭 that movie is so good 😭
@@vixiestarfire oh and that ”help im a fish” movie? it feels like I’ve hallucinated that whole movie cause not a soul knows about it 😭
ABSOLUTELY!!
I agree with most of the movies mentioned before, heck, even the black cauldron I remember watching. Or the never ending story, you should try watching it.
Ah yes, the forgotten child of Anastasia and Treasure Planet. I love it.
Also I always liked how, at the end, the ice crystals are the ones who make the oceans. It's a little detail but adds some realism to the sequence.
It came before treasure planet by two years, unless there is some time travel involved there is no way this movie could be a child of treasure planet.
This is the niche '90s kids content that I thrive on 🙌
They should bring this animation back. Force people to be patient and wait for it to come out in theatres.
You Talk About Fox Animation Studios For bring this animation back Bring This Studios
Fox Animation Studios Back

Yeah, thats why the Drej destroyed them.
OMG, this movie deserves so much more respect and I kinda wish they made a sequel. I LOVED IT SO MUCH IT TOOK MONTHS to find a DVD for it
It's the YEET sound effect when they ejected akima for me 🤣🤣 I literally died
I love this MOOOVIIIIEEEE
and yes they are long lost relatives. Have to be.
The soundtrack definitely dated the movie, but ngl the songs slapped!! That cosmic castaway line comes into my brain a lot LOL
You should watch the Sabersparks vid for this, the movie bombed so hard the animation studio shut down
This and the Iron Gigant are so underrated movies. I watched both so much but i still Love them, i don't know why but i never get this "i ve Seen it hadv enough" Feeling.
Kreed is voiced by Nathan Lane who also famously voiced Timon in the Lion King
TITAN AE !! I loved this movie as a kid and no one seems to know what I'm talking about when I bring it up. HECK YEA
- Space adventure? Check
- Roguish lead with daddy issues? Check

- Replacement father figure betrays them? Check
The Disney-Bluth rivalry lives on...
This is like a Treasure planet and Lost City of Atlantis crossover.
Omg Sophia STOP!!!! Between Treasure Planet and now Titan A.E you're bringing back my 8 year old self simping for the "misunderstood and angsty good-bad boy". Ruining my whole life and looking fabulous while doing it, cutie
This takes me back to renting it on DVD at blockbusters as a kid, proper tripped me out
I feel like you need to finish the trilogy of look a like male protagonist with don bluth's Thumbelina with the prince dude, also i love that movie haha.
Watch Redline or Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust if you want that Japanese animated movie experience. They're both great movies, I'm sure you'll love them
NO WAY
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOVIES I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR MY WHOLE LIFE
I just brushed it off multiple times because I swore the kid wasn't blonde (maybe confused him with the planet treasure guy)
I remember 20:00 dialogue VIVIDLY
Holy shit, I need to watch this again, can't believe I could've watched it so many times before, thank you Sophia, and thank you comment section that recommended this to her.
Matt Damon also voiced the character in my favourite animated movie: Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron by Dreamworks
If I did a live-action adaptation of this, I might cast Sophia as Akima.
This bring back the memory and almost forgot about this movie .
i love watching new movies with you, its so fun almost like a sleepover hehe
Space cartoons that I remember liking (but it's been years ) is Mars needs moms and battle for terra.
A really good movie to watch is While You Were Sleeping! It has Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman in it. Came out in 1995.
Sophia: I'm insane
Me: we know lol but you're adorably insane
I do like that they used the ice crystals around it to build the atmosphere and water.
I had the same theory!
Now I have finally watched it! And will watch the rest of this video.
This review is wonderful & really made me want to watch this movie.
No regrets.
Titan A.E walked so Treasure Planet could run
Holy shit, i am happy now, i am one of the comments that kept bring that up hahaha.
Sorry i forgot my manners for a little bit, thanks for the video hehe
Speaking of movies that unlock hidden memories, you should watch Xanadu (1980) I used to watch that all the time with my mom when I was little!
I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this film before. Added to the list of things to watch myself
No no not Titan A.E. I just got not quite paradise out of my head. But a great video regardless always a blast. Also Sophia's hair.🤩
I totally forgot this movie!,
One of my favorites, along with Atlantis.
I love this movie. I also got the soundtrack too that my Uncle got me for my CD player. Pretty sure that is how my early emo phase started.
The main man's is just Jim Hawkins with Dimitri's face
