It was kind of legitimately sad that fox animation didn't go anywhere due to titan ae being a massive bomb , films like Anastasia clearly show that they had potential to be great animation studio 😁👌
Aside from the predictable story beats, this movie should've done better in my opinion. But I remember seeing this in the theater to a relatively empty house.

I still really like Anastasia. Is it a great film? Not by any means. But it's still a lot of fun to watch.

Ngl, was pleasantly surprised to see a review of this movie that didn’t just rip on it the whole time. Feels like a lot of reviewers go back to some of our childhood films with the intent to ruin it for everyone else by saying “it’s not as good as you remember.” No! Titan A.E. It's like when we have a static shock or any shock it runs though our body, it's energy and so are our bodies. So with his, still slight, but human electric output and engineering mindset, Caleb put a positive and negative charge together creating mini blackout in the cell. Allowing his escape.

When kale broke out of prison, my 8 year old mind thought it was like an magnetic energy, such as if you try force two positive magnets together, but instead they repaled each other. Since the Aliens are pure energy and humans have a similar energy/electricty. When he brings his fingers to a focus point it created the energy around to repale and open the door. :3

The story in Titan AE was alright, and the pacing was kind of off a bit. Lack of marketing also hurts, and that ended the studio.
There's three books that were published - one about Cale's backstory, one about Akima's backstory, and then I think one that's just a novelization of the film. Cale is shown as a real fix-it type guy growing up and is all but in a literal sense a techromancer. He's a wizz kid with technology. I think what he was doing in the dredge ship and how he escaped is that he shorted out the door so it wouldn't shock him and then...yeah sort of magicked his way out. But it you pay attention to what he's doing, he is touching the door in very specific spots (where the waves of energy are overlapping) so he is in some way understanding how it is working and trying to solve it like a puzzle to get out. I never read the novelization, but maybe it explains what actually happened better in it. The escape to me did feel weird the first few times I watched it, but keeping in mind his backstory and paying attention to what he's doing, it does make some semblance of sense that he could figure out how the door worked and bust out of it.
I had a childhood friend whos dad worked in the marketing department for FOX animation studios. I had a box of bartok merch from the guy. But the coolest thing he did was let me and my dad know where the character designers where during AEs premier and got original drawings of Cale and Akima after watching the movie. Ive got them framed up on the wall now.
This and treasure planet were so ahead of the times man, so many amazing movies ( hell not just movies but books and authors as well, any artist really) get so much undeserved hate only to be seen as the materpieces they are long after it actually impacts the creator.
For example
Lovecraft died thinking nobody appreciated him or his work and now look at the mindstorm of eldritch love in culture.
And then of course the multitude of now famous painters that died young and unknown. Its really quite sad.
Funny that one of his masterpieces was when he was staying in New York which he hated the city.

I actually wanted to ask if Shadow's wings are clipped? They just seem kind of short. I'm just really unsure since he's obviously still very young. Instantly liked, because I definitely grew up with this movie being one of my top favorite animated films next to Iron Giant, Cats Don't Dance, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and many films that had good qualities but were associated with bad circumstances. Titan A.E. alone is probably why I've had an affinity for sci-fi themed content for so long now!
Even when I watch it back in retrospect and understand that some plot elements and character motivations were kinda forced or not fleshed out that well, the settings and set-pieces still seem one of a kind to me. That's probably what carries the film in the best ways. It was quite a feat to blend both traditional and computer generated animation onto the big screen, even if it flopped. No wonder the reception was so damaging that the entire animation studio shut down.
It's definitely not perfect, but it certainly got younger audiences (including lil' ol me) into the Sci-fi genre. In a way, the movie was successful but it took time to be realized as a cult classic from those growing up with it.
I love Cats Don't Dance. Whenever someone is getting sassy I always go "Get hot Miss Dimple" and no one ever gets the reference lol
Love this movie. Even as an adult. Continues to inspire my love of sci fi.
One of the things that I also found out, and read, was that this movie also received a novelization by Steve Perry (of whom is a noted sci-fi author who made several different books including Star Wars and alien/predator).
In the novelization it takes the story a step further and also looks at it from The Dredj perspective. As it turns out the Titan is built around ancient dredj technology that Humanity somehow acquired. Additionally the dredj are dying out due to their constant in fighting and lack of biology. The technology within the Titan actually could save their race. But when they found out that Humanity was using it and could potentially weaponize it, they sought their destruction in a desperate plan to eliminate a Potential Threat and save their race.
Overall I really enjoyed it as it filled in a lot of holes from this movie and also looked at how Dredj society functioned as a whole. But overall both the book and the movie are great and I still look back on them to this day.

A little science fact about this movie I heard a few years back, during a scene where Kale and Corso shoot out a cockpit window, spacing themselves he tells Kale to breathe out before getting spaced.
This is apparently because of the rapid change of pressure would cause the air in your lungs to be violently expelled, imploding(?) your lungs. They then used the momentum of being spaced to be flung into their main ship's hangar bay.
I think that little bit of trivia I saw was implying you could technically surivive the void of space for at least a few seconds, which I thought was really cool!
You can survive a few seconds. It seems more people think you'd actually freeze instantly instead of getting the bends. Don't know how that idea came about, it's actually rather difficult to get rid of heat in space, there's no air to transfer it to so the only method of dissipation is radiant.
The real math checks out too, it'd hurt like heck and you'd be recovering for a while even if that cargo hold pressurized fast you'd have some issues from the damage from vacuum exposure.

OK so one things in the movie that I think was overlooked was the reason why the Drej attempted to wipe out humanity. They believed that humanity could pose a threat to them one day so they wanted to get rid of that threat. I have a theory that they could somehow see into the future and saw their deaths at the hand of the titan so they tried to prevent their own fate only to cause it.
Fun Fact: Don Bluth was approached to direct Ice Age after Titan A.E. but because that film bombed, they didn't want Bluth to return and wanted to go with CGI instead with a whole new team of writers. While I love the first movie, knowing where the series went afterwards, maybe they should've had Don Bluth make his own version instead. And knowing he doesn't hold back on emotions, it could've ended up being a better movie because of that.
Oh and it also could've had much more appealing human character designs too.

That one male character with blonde hair looks like it was done by the same artist that did the guy from Ferngully. If you haven't seen that, it is amazing, and has an undertone of "save the forest". I think that artist also did the prince from Thumbalina.

I rediscovered this movie last year myself and I had a pretty solid time watching it. But it was just so unfortunate Titan AE, Treasure Planet _and_ Atlantis all bombed. These movies took some very admirable risks and the animators worked very hard bringing them to fruition...At least more people are coming around to them now though. I want to believe it this could lead to more 2D animated films again, but I'm guessing that's a long shot.
Either way, I enjoy these movies and I'm glad I saw them the first time around when I was younger. They make for good memories.

One of the coolest attention to detail in the beginning is that all the cracks on the earth when it's blowing up is all the Earth's actual tectonic plates. Also, the reason the character movements are so realistic is because these scenes were originally filmed in live action. They animated right over it and it's so innovative.
Rotoscoping wasn't "innovative" in 2000 - been around since the early days of animation.

I remember watching this movie in theaters when it came out as a kid and thought it was great. I didn’t realize how badly it performed but i still like it. Honest this could have been one of those animated movies that had cartoon show spinoff and I would all for it. The lore was great and had great world building potential
I understand every critique anyone has ever had towards this movie and I choose to ignore it. I LOVE Titan AE. The worldbuilding, the characters, the space ships, the aliens, the art of don bluth (is it written this way?) and the way the plot progresses.
This movie is dope as hell, I watched this so many times as a kid. I'm sure I've seen it recently and honestly I still enjoyed it. Maybe it was nostalgia but *chefs kiss*. Fox animations were absolute gems.
Titan A.E. is still one of my favorite movies, as it's just a fun, but pretty touching movie overall. Yes, the plot is a bit forced in places, the double heel turn especially - I would have preferred if the Drej had used Preed to manipulate Korso, rather than Korso being greedy and selfish. Preed was clearly evil the whole time, but Korso was a wild card, and one reveal is fine, but two just felt like "we don't have a better idea." Still, it was the late 90s/early 00s, and that kind of stuff was just normal at the time. But as a whole, I LOVE this movie. The spectacle of seeing it in the theater was so cool, and while I can't see it on the big screen the same way again, those scenes put me right back there where I can feel almost the same as I did when I was a kid.
Also, if you're wondering why you think of Creed when you watch the movie, Titan A.E. came out around the time that "Human Clay" came out, and there was some marketing with "Higher" being used for an ad, which played during Saturday morning cartoons and I thought the song sounded good, and the movie looked amazing. Scott Stapp being a colossal jerk aside, low-key "Human Clay" (and you know what, a few songs on "Weathered") is actually decent, but just go listen to Alter Bridge instead.

Titan AE was one of my favorite movies as a child that I watched hundreds of times. It took so many great elements of story telling and animation and action and sci-fi and created a great adventure.
The most underrated line in this movie is ”Exhale” as they are about to crack the glass of their pod and enter the vacuum of space unprotected. It’s the kind of detail you don’t even get on hard core sci-fi movies and for some reason they took the time to put it into this movie for children :O
Thank the artists, not the writers, for that! Fun fact: The original line in the script was "Take a deep breath" (or "breathe in", etc, I cant recall exactly) but a bunch of the artists at the studio pointed out, that in the vacuum of space, air in the lungs would be catastrophic. And thus, convinced a re-write.
This is definitely one of those movies that would thrive under a specific audience. I've tried to watch it a few times and couldn't get through the first thirty minutes, but I can tell there was a lot of passion involved.

I actually had a theory about the possibility the Drej aren't actually dead: ok so we know that the Titan converts energy into matter right? And they just used the Drej race to recreate earth right? So my thought is, what if the Drej aren't dead? that the Titan just changed them from energy to matter, and if their consciousness survived the process... yeah humanity is kinda screwed if they can take physical form or are able to manipulate the earth in any way. 👍 Granted I might be forgetting something but I just think there are horrific ramifications for this course of action.

I loved this movie when it came out. Also, the fun point about us as the viewers not knowing what the TITAN is or does is shared by most the characters. They were mostly all kids when it was made so they don't fully know either other than 'save mankind' .
1:20 minutes in, had to pause to "express" myself. I saw this movie in 3d when it came out and holy shit i loved this movie ao much. Not just for the crazy visuals back then, but the animation alone, watching without 3d is still an experience. The story isnt so original, but they way that told thia one was damn amazing to me and was suprised to learn, in later years, it didnt do as well as i thought

So many moments from this movie are just burned into my head forever - I think the bit toward the beginning when Corso and Kale cross a stretch of hard vacuum with nothing but a fire extinguisher was a formative moment in my childhood. The "Exhale." "What?" "EXHALE." lives in my brain rent free, and I think that specific scene impacted my taste in media more than just about anything else I watched as a kid.
I particularly liked Korso as a character, yeah he's a 'selfish twist villain' like the one in Atlantis but there's a really interesting thread of self-loathing that you can see in a couple of places, like when Cale saves him from falling, and he just tells Cale to let go, with that resigned edge in his voice. It's like on some level he hated what he was doing, he just didn't see another option. It helps explain why he was so quick to do a complete heel face turn when he realized the Titan thing might actually work, too. I might be reading into it too much, but to me at least he really felt like a flawed and unhappy person rather than a villainous caricature, and it adds a lot to the movie for me.

Treasure Planet isn't meant to be realistic sci-fi. It's fantasy sci-fi. Their ships are literally in space without any protection and they can breathe for some reason.
I feel like people harp on that movie too much for being "too unrealistic" when its clearly not trying to be realistic at all, its going for pure cool factor and I think it nails it personally. But Ive always been more into fantasy then sci-fi so maybe it was just more my jam.
My favorite part was that they didnt name the new planet “Earth.” They named it Bob
One of the things I always thought was really interesting about Titan A.E. is that not only is the human race not a superpower, but they are scattered and outside of occasional drifter colonies they don't typically have any group cohesion or loyalty to one another, mostly just doing what they can to barely get by. You can really get a sense that humans have little to no hope. In Star Wars the Empire are strictly controlling the galaxy, but people are still getting by, albeit somewhat inconvenienced by the troopers and their occupation of various planets.
In Titan A. E. we can see how what few humans remain are basically a societal punching bag, and for the most part things aren't much better for anyone else, either. The Dredge are closing in on most every other species around them to the point where they are pretty much a veritable plague cutting a swathe over anything they set their sights on. They aren't even looking to rule or conquer, only to destroy. People aren't able to eek out a living and get by while complying with rules or even martial law. They are to be exterminated. End of discussion.
You don't normally see a beginning status quo that gritty and brutal, so it's a different and refreshing take on the whole downtrodden hero with humble beginnings is destined to stop the opposing forces of evil looming overhead-type story. If you think about it, the human race could be saved by anybody, not specifically Kale. If it were anyone else who had the ring and knew what to do with it, any single human being could've taken up the task. Luke Skywalker (I know, I'm comparing to Star Wars too much) was the one to become the main hero because due to his force sensitivity and his family bloodline very few others would've been able to take up the challenge and succeed as well as Luke did.
Sure, theoretically there could've been someone else out there who fit the bill, but Kale isn't as specifically predestined for the hero's role. He is the son of the man who spearheaded the effort to rebuild the earth and have humans rise once again from the ashes so to speak, but Kale didn't inherit any special abilities and while he is smart as well as a quick thinker on his feet, it didn't necessarily need to be him to do what needed to be done.
For example: Say if Corso were an average good guy without ulterior motives and brought Kale along for the ride but Kale died at the enemy's hands, Corso would've likely been able to take over from there, and he might even have been better suited for the role. My overall point is that among all of the things I love about this movie is that it deviates a bit from the usual, but more importantly, it could be any one of us to be the hero, just like Kale.
I never thought about it before, but yeah. Humanity being able to create something like the Titan that is able to kill off your entire species is a pretty good reason to want humanity dead. I don't remember that, nor did I ever think of that before now.
I've watched this movie many times as a kid and even though it's been a while since my last viewing the opening and the music for this film was awesome
I never saw Atlantis or Treasure Planet...but I did see Titan A.E. and I have always loved it! And yeah, it does look a little "Beast Wars-y" at times

I really liked this movie growing up I used to watch all the time till the DVD was scratched
I was so in love with this movie and Treasure Planet as a kid. It's so odd that they failed when I've heard so many other people say they loved them as children, but it's probably just due to parents being unwilling to shell out cinema money for them.
In the end, tho, for me Treasure Planet wins out a little over this one, simply because I like the main protag a bit more and also it focuses on found family rather than a romance, which I personally just prefer found family over romance lol. If there was ever a movie that combined the best of both movies into one it might just blow all our minds.
I get goosebumps everytime the Titan is making New Earth and the giant graviton beams activate. So freaking cool and makes me remember how blessed we are to have this wonderful home made just for us.

This is legit one of my favourite movies of all time and it does not get talked about enough at all! Can’t wait to watch and see what you think about it.

Titan A.E. is an post-apocalyptic science fiction action film. It is more of an action movie than an adventure one. The concept and idea are interesting, interesting that Atlantis and Treasure Planet are similar despite them all projects flopping so hard at the box office.
How I understand what going is that Titan A.E. was originally going to be a live action film project, but it given to Don Bluth to direct it as an animated film. During production it fell apart of Fox Animation Studios losing 300 Animators and animation studios such as Blue Sky Studios and others had to finished the film on the behalf of 20th Century Fox. Then after the film was out, it’s bombed so hard and sadly bankrupted Fox Animation Studios. Pretty much, the project was doomed from the start with too many cooks in the kitchen mostly with the script with Fox hiring writers and writers leaving. It’s not the writers and filmmakers’s fault, it more of Fox’s studio interference which affected the box office performances similarly to Ridley Scott’s masterpiece 1982’s Blade Runner distributed by Warner Bros.
Also it might lead to some of us wondering if there is an alternative version of Titan A.E. of either the screenplay or what was filmed already. The deleted scenes doesn’t count, I’m talking about what was left out from the script, whether Joss Wedon, Ben Edlund, or John August know about the alternative vision of the project since they both worked on the screenplay.

Thank you for spending time with these classics and for that brief nod to The Thief and the Cobbler. Recently rewatched it and absolutely adored it growing up. I went to see this by myself on my birthday because it came out 2 days before and its always been my habit to go see a movie that comes out on or before my birthday
I liked it but the theater was empty so people really weren't into it

The novelization explains so much. For example you get full chapters from the Dreg queens perspective. There are details about how the dreg work and think. Cales background as an engineer are used a bunch too, including how he escapes jail. It was pretty good

Just based on this review, I thought the twist would be that the Titan is an extremely powerful weapon.
I only watched this movie as a very young child once or twice and had no recollection of the plot, but the imagery of the map and the terrifying design for the dredge REALLY stuck with me, it was so unique and captivating. Treasure Planet, Titan AOE and Atlantis really are in a league of their own when it comes to creativity and standing on their own. It's a damn shame they didn't do well enough to encourage more movies like this.
Honestly, the whole "nostalgia for something youve never experienced" is very relatable for me. I was born in 2000, but i feel so nostalgic for the 90s, despite not being born until after they ended.
I distinctly remember the very specific reason I didn’t watch this movie despite being very into animated movies and absolutely loving Treasure Planet, the Thief and the Cobbler and others. I didn’t know what “A.E.” meant. And as an adult that wouldn’t put me off of a movie but for animated movies around that time, if the title seemed to be a reference to something you didn’t understand it often meant it was tied in with a show or was a sequel. I thought it was from a show I hadn’t seen so I didn’t bother with it. I thought it was like Dragon Ball where they added Z or GT to the name for the sequels. It was common at the time 🤷♀️

I literally remembered this movie the other day and I had to sit down and watch it. This was definitely one of my introductions to sci-fi as a kid (along with Treasure Planet, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Phantom Menace). I really miss these days of movies, some of them were truly ahead of their time!
It was funny that Titan A.E., Treasure Planet, and Atlantis were all bombs, because I was the exact demographic those movies were aimed at and I was absolutely THERE FOR THEM.

Bro you unlocked a memory for me, I watched this movie when I was like 6 or so and felt a strange feeling like nothing before..nostalgia, idk wtf why or how, but I felt nostalgia the first time watching this movie too, at a very young age when I didn't even know what that feeling was lol
In a nutshell, this is what I remember from the film's novelization. The Drej were extragalactic aliens who got stuck in our galaxy a long time ago. They reproduce by harnessing the energy of white dwarf stars, creating bodies for themselves that don't decay. They used to be gods to many races in our galaxy because of their advanced technology, but now they are struggling because they can't reproduce and their population is shrinking. Humans have discovered a new energy source, and the Drej are afraid that humans will use it as a weapon against them. They try to steal the technology, but fail, so they decide to destroy Earth to protect themselves. The Titan, the new energy source, could either save or destroy the Drej, which is why they are so desperate to control it. I wished the entire Drej backstory had somehow made it into the movie's final cut.
This makes a hell of alot more sense than any rationalizations we can come up with.

Heavy Metal was following a bunch of French magazines and Exosquad wanted to be like Japanese anime. Sony made Heavy Metal and Universal Animation Studios made Exosquad. Exosquad had no blood but a ton of deaths, Heavy Metal well if you were a janitor even today you'd be cleaning the blood off the floors and walls. Exosquad lasted two seasons ending on a cliffhanger but did have a pretty successful first season with the death of a main character all on a Saturday morning cartoon show in the 90s, Heavy Metal had no story, just blood, sex, and drugs.

BionicPig Treasure Planet cam out in 2002 and Atlantis came out in 2001so how can Titan A.E take from those films when Titan A.E came out 2 years before Treasure Planet and Titan A.E came out a year before Atlantis so why make comparations ? so Disney basically stole from Titan A.E (TWICE) 🤨

This was one of my favorite movies and it weirded me out that so many people of my age hadn't heard or watched this movie. I held this in the same ranking of Atlantis and Treasure Planet bc its just so cool and unique

Every time when my parents were about to take a road trip, if I had to go with them, I made sure to bring this particular movie. Now when I decide to go on a road trip, I make sure to have this movie ready to watch, especially if I'm not the one driving. This movie is criminally underrated and doesn't deserve the hate it got.
