The Wolf of Wall Street follows the rise and fall of Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker who builds a massive fortune through fraudulent activities. The movie starts with Jordan, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, beginning his career at a respectable Wall Street firm. However, after the firm collapses, he finds himself working for a smaller company that deals in penny stocks, where he learns the ropes of aggressive sales tactics.
Jordan starts his own firm, Stratton Oakmont, with his friend Donnie Azoff (played by Jonah Hill) and a group of friends. They use dishonest methods to manipulate stock prices and swindle investors, making Jordan incredibly wealthy. His lifestyle spirals into a whirlwind of excess, with drugs, parties, and extravagant purchases. As Jordan's wealth grows, so does the scrutiny from the FBI, led by agent Patrick Denham, who begins investigating Stratton Oakmont's shady practices.
Throughout the movie, Jordan’s marriage deteriorates due to his infidelity and drug use, while his friendships become strained. The intense pressure from the FBI eventually leads to his downfall. Jordan is eventually arrested, and his empire crumbles as he cooperates with authorities to reduce his sentence, ultimately serving time in prison.
Matthew McConaughey’s role in the film is brief but memorable. He plays Mark Hanna, Jordan’s first boss on Wall Street. In an early scene, Mark takes Jordan to lunch and gives him a wild, almost absurd speech about the realities of working on Wall Street. He introduces Jordan to the idea of focusing on making money without caring about the clients' interests. Mark’s advice includes staying high on drugs and indulging in hedonistic behavior to cope with the stress of the job. During this conversation, McConaughey’s character beats his chest and hums-a technique McConaughey uses in real life, which was improvised in the scene. Mark Hanna’s character sets the tone for Jordan’s journey into the darker side of Wall Street, though he doesn’t appear again after this key scene.
