I knew Run DMC, but not Aerosmith. I grew up in the 80’s and didn’t know Aerosmith had recorded it in the 70’s. Now they’re one of my favorite bands.

Man, as a teen, this was all over the radio. Aerosmith did the original version in the 70s, but I was so used to this version that the original sounded odd. I love both versions though.

This collab was significantly impactful to both groups, although it came out decades later that neither wanted to do it and thus did not get along too well. This song helped bring rap to the mainstream and helped Aerosmith return to prominence, but both groups have insisted that they would have found success even without it.

Aerosmith already had a career in response to one of the comments below, I saw them live.
Aerosmith wrote this. Both bands benefit from this. Run DMC asked to record this, hence they got together it revamped Aerosmith career again and RUN DMC.

I was gonna come on and say "How have you never heard Run DMC?" but you explained it as you never heard this song. Man I don't know how you missed this one. It was a huge hit. If you want to see an even better rock/rap collaboration check out Public Enemy and Anthrax doing the PE original Bring Tha Noize. The guitarist for Anthrax even raps the last 2 verses. Another great one is House Of Pain and Helmet's Just Another Victim from the Judgment Night soundtrack, where every song is a rock/rap collaboration. Ice T and Slayer do one together. Some awesome stuff there.

If you wanna hear rock with rap and a splash of reggae for flavor you have to check out P.O.D. (Payable On Death). SO many great songs. Southtown, Rock The Party, Satellite, Alive, Set Your Eyes to Zion, Full Color, Thinking About Forever, Youth of the Nation, Set It Off, Asthma, Find My Way, Wildfire, Execute the Sound, Revolution...heck, man, probably easier to just tell you to go album by album with Brown, Fundemental Elements of Southtown, Satellite, and Payable on Death. There's a ton more but those four albums cover my late childhood into high school. Kickass music.

One of the most important songs and videos in music history. Rap was growing and fast, but this video was rock - which had been on top for 30 years - publicly and officially acknowledging that rap was just as big and here to stay. And the song is a remake of an old 70s Aerosmith song, showing that the music wasn't so different after all. This was and is so cool. Iconic.

Coming from a guy who was reacting the same when this kind of stuff was being released for the first time, it's great to see it provoking the same feelings today and to see folks really enjoying it today considering the majority of manufactured crap that is supposedly called music these days. It's also a great throwback for me.
Can I make a suggestion.... I used to love ICE T, NWA etc... many years ago and through that, in a convoluted way, got into The Fun Lovin Criminals. Give some of their early stuff a whirl, I'm pretty sure you'll get and enjoy that.
Peace Out... 60 year old white guy...

This is what invented the rock/rap crossover, it was new and different at the time but rock fans and rap fans loved the new sound because it something that no artist or band did. After the success of this it started to become a trendsetter for future bands and artists to have the crossover sound. RUN DMC are pioneers of the rap and hip hop community.

Most rap/rock bands or collaborations have been awesome in my experience hearing them too. Their was this rock station here in GA, that used to have a whole session of rock/ hip hop songs mixed together. I listen to everyone they mix together, and was all bad ass sounding. Who would thought two totally different genres could blend so well? Just got to get right flow on rap part, and have the band rock with the tempo and beat on point. Then, a match mad in music heaven

This was a groundbreaking song and video. Most of us loved it. Some racist people were angered by it. I never understood why people were expected to like one genre and not the other. Aerosmith went through the late 70s in a drug induced haze and had fallen from the stature they had attained. Their collaboration with RUN DMC liked them back to prominence and invigorated their career. Also interesting to note Steven Tyler has since found out he is the great grandson of a prominent African American family.

Sorry, Haze, but you made the same mistake that Many Others have made: You listened to the RUN DMC Version of this incredible song. I remember when this "redux" first came out, and I couldn't BELIEVE how bad (and I don't mean "bad" as in "good"...I mean "lousy") it was compared to the original. Please give the original version a try. It's on the album, "Toys In The Attic". If you don't agree, you'll have wasted a couple of minutes...If you DO agree (and I think you will), you will hear what is quite possibly the best song that Aerosmith ever did. -- Oh, and there's "Big Ten Inch Record". `Don't wanna miss out on that!
"Last Child" is from another album, but you need to hear that as well. `Blew us away when we were young...`Still does.
While you're at it, check out their album, "Get Your Wings". The entire album is great, but give a listen to "Lord of The Thighs", "Woman of the World", "Seasons of Wither", and "Pandora's Box". You'll be glad you did!
