Composting with Worms to Turn Garbage Into Food | PARAGRAPHIC

  • Between 30 to 40 percent of the United States’ food supply is wasted. Vermicomposting keeps that garbage out of the landfill and turns it back into food.
You probably end up throwing away a lot of food after some meals. It’s okay, most of us wish we were better about food waste but it often seems unavoidable. We live in a society of surplus where many of us have more than enough for over 3 meals a day. Food donations are great but what about those leftover scraps on your plate or the food items that spoil quickly?
Apple cores, banana peels, moldy bread, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, old pasta, strawberry stems, leftover rice, bad broccoli, spoiled cauliflower… all that food waste ends up in the garbage and eventually the landfill where it rots and serves no purpose other than wasting more food. It’s an unfortunate side effect of all our abundance that so much just goes wasted.
But if we look to nature, we find a simple solution that helps solve our food waste problem AND helps us grow better food, faster. Vermicomposting is the natural process of using worms to aid in the composting process. This happens all the time in nature but you can set up a similar small-scale ecosystem right in your house with a worm bin.
If outdoor gardening isn't your thing, consider growing your own food indoors instead: • Grow Food Anywhere Wit...

I had a worm box going in the garage for 2 years. Started with a takeaway container worth of worms, grew to a big seafood styrofoam then split to 2 such containers. It really cut down your food waste to nothing to the point our family was having trouble generating enough green waste to feed the colony.
Unfortunately, for your average person, separating the worms so you can harvest the dropping without an expensive contraption like that pan shaker or a spin bin is hugely time consuming and the main reason why I stopped in the end. Highly recommend it as a mean to reduce your waste, not necessarily to create compost for the garden.

I have ivory head roaches and worms and let me say the ivory head roaches are the Ferrari of composters. They compost it so much faster and are less picky and prolly harder to kill except cold. They do need it above 65 and to breed closer to 80 but in a greenhouse operation or any grow op there should be no shortage of this environment. I keep mine in a closet and they breed. In summer they go on the patio for more heat. The added advantage tho is chiten in their frass and the silica in the shells of the ones that die in the bin

worms are absolutely important for the soil of our earth and naturally keep the soil loose and thus supply it with oxygen. on its way through the soil everything goes in the front of the worm and comes out again rich in nutrients. all this far from compost, but also in the normal soil under our feet, in forests and just everywhere where there is soil. a huge problem for the work and life of worms is the cultivation of fields with heavy agricultural machinery! Due to their weight and the constant driving over the ground, the soil is extremely compacted so that in the end it is partly solid as stone. this prevents the worms from doing their important work and harms the soil.

Also, while cardboard from Amazon might go in, but average boxes (from frozen foods, etc) that have some kind of coating, probably can't go in, huh? Can I put pistachio seeds in there? How do I get started?
