  • Today I wanted to answer some concerns left as a comment to me the other day. In this comment they emphasized feeling as though, even though they feel deeply drawn to practicing witchcraft they feel as though there are pressures that put constraints on life such as feeling unsure of how to practice correctly, being witchy enough, and ultimately facing being overwhelmed by it all.
I hope this video can be of use!

I grew up in the 1970s and 80s in rural NY. There wasn't alot of books on the subject of witchcraft avalable to me, although my mother did have a few. She was from the deep south, and uncomfortable with the ways of the north. All my life, she was talked about as a witch, to which I thought they meant an excentric woman tending her garden and prefering the company of animals. Although the was a certain anount of aprehention people tended to feel from my mother. I read up on witchcraft, what I could with limited books in the library and no internet to look things up. But I never thought of myself as witchy. But soon mom's nickname followed me and I was called a witch. I've dropped out of any organized religion in my teens, and while being more outgoing then my mother was, I've always been a bit of a loner. I had a more philosophical bend to my beliefs, reading and studying Buddhism, ancient cultures and religions, and history. In rural America, if this makes you look witchy, that is truely strange to me. It's not like I have ever been particularly open about my believes, learning from my elders that one doesn't discuss religion, politics, finances, or sex if one does not want to start a fight and make enemies. Now, in my 50s, i see that my leanings have always been more witchy in nature. That my mother practiced a kind of folk craft in her house hold chores that being more southern, always looked odd and scary to the northerners of our conservitive rural area. Buit I watch these videos from many people, and my craft doesn't look much like anyone elses. I don't use a special candle for spells, mom just used any candle as the flame and it's light were what was needed. Mom used normal cleaners and sang and mumbled under her breath words she couldn't say outloud in our Catholic home as she cleaned and protected us, or as she planted her garden, or as she made a simple cough syrup for us kids, or cooked our meals. she was a practical lady, and it wasn't the tools she used, it was the intent behind them. Now, I find I am drawn to more tools then she would ever have had, to study more about things she wouldn't, but in my practice, it is still the simple things that one has to do as chorse in life that I work with. and while I do smoke cleanse after cleaning, mom would've been satified with her mumblings under her breath as she cleaned the windows and doors with whatever cleaner she bought from the store and a pinch of salt added for good measure. It took me a while to understand that her craft was just as valid as someone who did big elaborate rites naked under the full moon. Her way was to bring a bit of magic into the mundane, to use simple things to take back what power she could and to keep her home and family safe. unfortunately, she passed away, having spent years in depression and dementia, and I was never able to ask her what little things she mumbled as she worked. So I rebuild her ways as best I can. My daughter now shares in this, as my mother's mother did before us all. There is no right way to be a witch, to look the part or practice perfectly. It is more a mind set, a way to believe, a philosophy of life, that no amount of crystals, or fancy tools, or dress can achieve. It's taken me a long time to see this. I see so many people trying to buy their way into the craft by having the right look, dressing the part, making their houses look like movie sets. But the craft is in your heart and soul, it isnt something to buy. and one can look perfectly normal to most people and still be a witch.

I like how Alice Hoffman elaborates witchcraft in her books as a “Nameless Art”. I haven’t encountered personal constraints, I have encountered men who were repelled by it tho. I really think those men were just seeking to control me

I think this message is so important. When I first started practicing, it would have an “all or nothing” mentality if I couldn’t practice exactly how I thought I should have. Sometimes this mindset still creeps in and I feel like I’m fake or not “witchy” enough. However, I know that the things I do daily and the magic I do have in my life is enough for right now. Thank you for this message💖

It took me so long to accept that ultimately, practicing Wicca is a unique, and very personal journey. Thank you for reinforcing the fact that there is no "correct" way, as long as it suits one's personal needs. As for appearing witchy enough? Eh. I've found that it's more important to appear however you feel most comfortable. Also, I've never been one to tip my hand, in order to impress. It's more about being satisfied with myself. As always, I very much enjoyed the time I spent, watching your channel. Blessed be, sister.

Spiritual practice should bring freedom of soul/spirit, not restrict. As with any religion or practice, there's no "one right way" to do things. True "witchyness" requires nothing extraneous, and can be as simple as looking up at the full moon and speaking to Universe from your heart as the light floods your spirit with peace. That's just as powerful and meaningful as a ritual that requires 20 different herbs and tools, etc.
A book I recently read that speaks to a lot of the topics mentioned here is Everyday Witchcraft - Making Time for Spirit in a Too Busy World by Deborah Blake. Lots of excellent suggestions and tips for incorporating practice into daily life (if that's what one is looking for).

When I started out, I thought I could only be a "real" witch if I worked with at least one God or Godess. That I could only call myself a witch if I worked with others. But that is not the way that comes naturally to me. I too, thought I needed to do a ritual for every single moon phase, regardless of my life. But that is simply not feesable when your holding down a full time job, having a family to care for, a relationship to maintain and friends to meet. Let alone having time for myself. At some point I decided it couldn't go on like this and I did leave the craft for a time. But it called me back and now I practice the way that feels natural for me and in a way it fits into my life. And I have to say, I have become more powerful in every aspect, not just witchcraft. Blessed be, all you magickal beings 💖

Such a great topic! I'm so happy to see a conversation around this. Recently I went through a lot of trauma in my personal life which caused a lot of burnout. I used to feel guilty for not having the energy to practice. Then I came to realize that listening to and honoring my body's need for rest IS honoring my practice

Right, thank you. Also, pretty much, if you're creating, crafting, cooking, or speaking, you're crafting witchery. Just watch your intentions. Do it with love and healing in mind. That doesn't mean you aren't witchy "enough", just who you are. ❤

The intent and joy of the craft is where it's at. Forget the Hollywood version and appreciate the art and joy from what you do. To me, it's like cooking, you get out of it what you put in. There is no "correct" way to make meatloaf. You make it the way you like it. But, as with anything, practice, trial and error, is the only way to get better. Personally, I am more fulfilled doing for others and not what's in it for me. The Spirit of giving is 10 times more rewarding than the Spirit of taking. I only ask for protection, wisdom, and knowledge.

Hi girl! Good to see you’re back!
    And happy Litha 😉
I wanted to share with you a recipe for a really nice oil I make: Rosemary and Clove Essential Oil. I came up with it of the limited resources I have. I guess that’s a blessing, because it inspired me to use what i have creatively!
    Anyway, here’s the recipe.
    Ingredients:
Jar, some rosemary, a pinch of cloves, and a cooking oil of your choice (i used olive).
    Method:
    1. Pour the olive oil into the jar.
    2. Light a candle, and meditate with the smoke as it cleanses your space.
    3. Infuse your intention into the rosemary, and wave it through the smoke. Pick some of the leaves off and put them in the jar. If it has flowers, put those in too as they make it smell super nice!
    4. Use the cloves to ‘boost’ the rosemary’s protection properties. Imagine it flowing through the rosemary, strengthening and healing it. And you!
    5. Seal the lid, and shake it. Then, allow it to set for two months.
    6. If you make it at the end of summer, it will be ready to use at the start of autumn or winter!

Great advice 😉 I do my witchcraft my way, I don’t adhere to any rules, I do what resonates with me. I live in a very witchy cottage in the forest and I live an earth based witchy lifestyle but I suffer from time to time with imposter syndrome too. I try not to get caught up in what others do. One time I decided coz I’m Australian I shouldn’t follow the Wheel of the Year. It lasted about 6mths. I felt lost and wanted to abandon my craft. I’m 81% DNA Celtic. I’m not Australian at all! I’m not indigenous to this country that I just happen to be born in. I realised it’s in my blood to follow a Celtic path. Since then I’ve never looked back.

Thank you so much for this fantastic video! I've learned over the last few years that as long as I'm authentic to myself and my needs, I will find the right balance in anything I do, and that is doubly so for witchcraft. I'm taking the learning slowly, doing rituals when I feel called to do them and using my intention as and when I remember and have the energy, otherwise is becomes too much. Sometimes I do nothing at all for a few weeks, save some gratitude prayers, and that's perfectly fine and keeps me connected well enough until I'm ready for more again. Grimm is so cute as well in this video! Sending all my love ❤❤❤

I been into witchcraft since I was 17 and I'm going on 41 now. I'm by far not a beginner witch but I think that this is a beautiful reminder that our witchcraft is personalized and doesn't need to be any certain type of way. I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and then we get overwhelmed. Without realizing it we just don't wanna do anything even our practices that make us happy and connected because we forget n treat it just like another thing on our check list to do. It's much easier to avoid everything sometimes than pick n choose the differences of what we need and don't need. I know it's ok to take a break but this just reminded me that we get what we give. I been feeling really off lately because of certain situations. This reminded me that I haven't been putting nothing into my craft and that's why I been disconnected. I forgot to take a minute and check in with myself. Make time to be present at my alter n put forth some effort even if for a little bit. I haven't done nothing for a month. Also I been cleaning and the path to my alter is clutter presently and the flow of my room felt stagnant and I couldn't breathe. (Like CHI) Thank you for your help. I'm gonna save this video Incase I ever need reminded why I fell in love with the craft in the first place.

Hi Annie,I also appreciate this topic, as I wonder about this and doubt myself. I know that I'm eclectic in all things, so it makes sense that I would be eclectic in witchcraft, too. I love learning about all the different paths, picking and choosing what comes naturally to me for the most part. I've always felt so at home in nature, and am grateful for how much more I've been learning about plants and the interconnectedness of all life.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way either, there is only the way the meshes with who you are. Strict rules and such remind me too much of organized religions and for me that makes it very inauthentic. I focus on my own intuition and focus my intention and do what just feels right to me in the moment. And being "witchy" enough makes it sound like a pinterest post, it's part of who you are, so let that stuff go folks. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks!

I think of my practice like flying through my days. There are air currents that help and some that make the flying harder… or at least, flying in a certain way harder. As someone who is a senior in high school, has ADHD, and struggles with type 1 diabetes i used to find myself stressing over my witchcraft journey. I used to not be able to practice everyday, i had so many things going on in my everyday life, and it used to frustrate me and make me feel like i was less of a witch because i didn't practice and study everyday. Since then, i unknowingly backed away from my journey and basically abandoned my path and left it in the back of my mind for months. I've finally started to practice again after realising that i don't have to practice everyday and i don't have to be perfect in order to still consider myself a witch. Is there an audio we can get of the background music? It's so beautiful and I honestly think it would emotionally help me right now to sit with it and be with myself to resolve a lot of inner turmoil.

I think the number one rule is there are no real rules we are all unique in our ways, so about how to do things correctly is the are no real rules, kind of like when you are making something to eat you go by basic things but change it up for your own taste buds for me as long as I am not hurting others be it animals people and other living things then its all good , some people like candles incense other s just like connecting the living feeling of everything all around and ( which is much like myself) I really dont need all of those things sure sometimes I may use them but most times I dont some people may need such things so that it helps them focus better others dont . all of my life I think I have always been doing my own magic but I still want to learn how others do it so I may take some of that knowledge and being like water adjust it to the way I am ;)

🌲🍀🐾🦉🦌 you have these "fireside" chats down. when you run for president, as an INDEPENDENT of course😌, you'll know 4 certain, you've got my vote ✔ in advance. at least I'll know the Woods & Waters 🎣 will be Protected by someone who truly "ENGAGES" with Nature 😉🦌🦉🐾🍀🌲.

Hi! I hope you'll notice. I'm a baby witch, started practicing the craft very recently, although i had the interest for a while now. Your page is my favorite by the way, i find your vibe soothing and very informational. I vibed! I've watched few of your videos and is still watching... I'm curious when you started the craft, who influenced you? Did you have teachers? Sorry to ask again if you already answered before.

Walking in nature is still a form of meditation, period. Good to see you, your videos have not shown up in a long time. I notice you are not using the finger brace anymore, hopefully this is because what was happening is corrected now. Your Beloved is beautiful, I have a white German Shepard also, very affectionate and want to be with their human. You look beautiful too!

Over time I’ve come to accept that if I don’t particularly have a certain level of energy then even if I do the working, it doesn’t feel magical. With that I’ve also worked on balance and knowing if I push too hard that just makes it harder to do even the little things. Yeah I would say balance is my power word in a lot of life aspects at the moment 😅

So... this is something I have always wondered... can I consider myself a witch if I don't actively "practice"? I mentally appreciate the spirits, nature and energies around me. I give mental thanks, and occasionally I will give thanks in some physical way but mostly its all internal. I've been told that this is not being a witch, but I feel it in me. Something inside me just connects with the concept and the energy of being a witch and I just wonder if there is something else I could call it? I don't want to, but I don't want to feel like an imposter. The reason I don't actively practice isn't because I don't want too, I just forget. Wether because of life, or my mental disability. I know she addressed this but I feel there was still some level of practice expected. At least SOME... you know? I hope this isn't confusing and I've explained myself well enough.

As a newly practicing natural witch, I feel like I have passed "baby" stage, but now with everything I've learned, the "green" path seems to be the way. Other than intuition, what can I do to be sure I'm going the right way in my practice?

Do you celebrate all the sabbats? I often find I don't have the time to plan anything often ending up just getting out in nature and observing the seasonal changes. I often wonder if this is enough. I suppose that's probably the wrong way of looking at it and that it is enough of it feels right for me. I used to think I had to cast spells and do rituals every full moon. It was way too much and too formal, like you the for!I rituals are just not for me, that's why I love your channel, your practice is similar to the way I feel comfortable practicing. I don't praise any deity, just respecting and being thankful for nature, I don't do any rituals and rarely cast spells. Generally I cook and garden with intention adding healing and living energy into them.
