    There seems to be quite a bit of confusion on Facebook and comment sections on TH-cam as to whether or not the Bunnahabhain 12 is peated or not. Although numerous sources say it is "lightly peated" same say it is "unpeated" (Whisky Advocate) and I had already reviewed it from a mini, yesterday I purchased a full sized bottle in order to do a re-evaluation.

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The official site lists subtle smoke in their tasting notes so it’s likely be lightly peated.

    • @FEWGEE1
      @FEWGEE1 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's 3 ppm, which to all extents and purposes makes it unpeated.

    This is great stuff. One of my early picks when getting into scotch, lucky me! This and Deanston 12 are the ones I recommend for people who want to try something up from baseline stuff like Glenmorangie or Glenfiddech. Cheers

    I tried the Bunna 18 after a couple of heavier peated scotches and was certain I'd just been handed a sherry-bomb! They do have a comparatively soft/subtle peat that's for sure.
    I enjoy the 12 and regularly pick it up when its £29 at Waitrose - great one to sneak some peat on people haha

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now that I'm into peat, I actually struggle to pick out the Smokey flavours in Bunna.

    • @WhiskyGeek
      @WhiskyGeek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NoNonsenseWhisky I think I was too far down the rabbit-hole to ever have found this one that smokey/peaty haha. I do find that people who generally can't get behind peat don't mind this one though. This and HP 12 are my go-to peat introductions.
      I was introducing a friend to appreciating Scotch (rather than "necking" whisky) at a wedding recently and had a Scotsman declare the only true introduction is jump in with Ardbeg haha.

    Hi Vin, a nice review of the Bunna 12. Despite being very lighted peated, over the last year or so it has become one of my regular go to Islay whiskies joining the peat bombs, Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10, as my most consumed expressions from Islay. Cheers ! 🥃

  • @uilleachan
    @uilleachan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If I remember correctly, when the bottle changed, at the time they did two separate bottles of the same: one non chill filtered 46% in the rounded bottle of today, the other the regular Bunnahabhain 40% or 43% chill filtered but again in a different bottle to the classic Bunnahabhain that went before. Both at the same price. The Westend Garage in Dingwall usually has a great range at a decent price over the festive and thats where I picked up the 5 or 6 bottles I had of it at the time, it was the Christmas discount offer that ran into March or so, so grabbed one each time I was passing until it was gone, discounted to £22 from £28 if I recall correctly.
    The smell and taste must have become well lodged in the old memory banks as I bought a bottle of single cask Islay from the SMWS around 5 or 6 weeks back and I knew straight away what it was, a quick google of the bottle number confirmed it.
    Much as I loved the older classic style, and it was classic, I prefer the NCF NC 46% version, apart from the additional alcohol content the SMWS bottle is remarkably similar to how I remember it. If you want a 3cl sample of the SMWS bottle to try get in touch.

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's excellent knowledge, thanks for the insight! It's a shame I haven't been able to try the older bottling before this video as it would have been nice to compare

    • @uilleachan

    • @uilleachan
      @uilleachan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know the feeling, thing to keep in mind though is that some of the whiskies you're drinking now, or in the not too distant past or future, will be the unaffordable classics in twenty thirty years time. Keep up the good work!!

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

  • @jamesa678
    @jamesa678 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I tried a dram of this in a pub and really enjoyed it, found it very sweet and full. I bought a bottle on the back of that experience and it was nothing like I remembered, the bottle had a really notable smell and taste of marmite (Vegemite) which is the weirdest tasting note I've ever come across. Maybe it was a weird vatting. I'll give it another try!

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had this sort of thing happened to me before as well. Batch variance can be a real pain but I find tastes can change too.
      Next time you try it, try waking up your palate with something basic and see if it's any different

    • @jamesa678
      @jamesa678 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bit of water and half an hour in the glass settled it down a bit but I don't usually add much water to anything that isn't cask strength. I suppose having something basic before means having 2 drams instead of 1 in the name of science, I'll take that excuse!

    • @jasoncoates1835
      @jasoncoates1835 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, don't forget that some time in an open bottle can really change a spirit. If you open something and it doesn't hit your palate quite right, drink it down to the shoulder and come back to it in a few weeks. Some bottles won't change much, but others will utterly transform. The bottle you drank from in the bar may have simply opened up after having been open a while.

    • @jamesa678
      @jamesa678 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite possible! I did notice it become better as the bottle went down and have done with several whiskies, Glenfiddich 15 and Oban 14 spring to mind.

    00:41! , pronunciation is actually incorrect.
    It's correctly boona-ha-bhen (as in bin); NOT boona-ha-Vhen (vinh). There is no "V", it's a B!!!
    Also, 01:08, 25-30 PPM? That's incorrect as well, the actual distiller himself said it's "officially un-peated" and it is only 0.5 - 2 PPM (if someone wanted to be "scientific"), so 25 is too far-fetched pal; sorry, but no!

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right about the ppm. I'm definitely right about the pronunciation though, it even has the V on the wiki page (and many other credible sources) if you want to look it up

      @Y!
      It’s like the name “Siobhan”, pronounced “Sha-Von”, the “bh” phonogram becomes a “V” sound in Gaelic. Coincidentally, “B” and “V” behavior similarly in Spanish, albeit it an unrelated language. Good Review!
