Funny moments before each game> players sitting as they feel awkward, avoiding each other's eyes, looking to the left or right or covering their faces with hands, and them the relief: ghostly sound in Estonian or in accented English, then quick flabby handshake, and as vagabonds Salvation Army's dining room they throw themselves on the pieces. - By the way, the game next to this one, in which the guy with white pieces came 5 minutes late, has interesting opening 1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. g3, with early e4, I am now wondering how it went. Esipenko looked absent-minded and bored, whilst Nguyen knew the variation more than well. Esipenko played "natural" moves, now he will study this variation, too.

Esipenko did well to win this game. Not sure if Nguyen missed anything but black's position looked very good at some points. The backward pawn on b3, doubled pawns on e3 and e4, and the lack of coordination with white's position. I haven't put this game through an engine, but I would not be surprised if black had a clear edge after move 17.

@@planahath Correct Black had the edge here after move 17...he started to drift with Qb6 and Nc5...instead 17...Ng4! was a missed idea which sets up nice control of e5.....

Esipenko looks to be well ahead on move 13. Failing to push the c pawn just looks like a blunder? His expressions afterwards suggest he realizes this.

Don't play the Catalan if you don't know what the proper response to dc should be. Qc2 wasn't the right move.

You've got to be kidding me. You think Esipenko doesn't know the right move? 7. Qc2 is the main move in this position by far
