  • Pakse is the second largest city in Laos. It is located on the Mekong River in the southern part of the country. It was founded by the French as an administrative outpost in 1905. It was also the capital of the Champasak Kingdom until its overthrow in 1946 and the creation of Laos. Pakse is an excellent starting point to the region's 62 official tourist destinations: 32 natural, 7 historical and 27 cultural.
Si Phan Don literally means "4000 islands" and the name is fully justified. On the border of Laos and Cambodia, the Mekong River spreads over a large area, reaching up to 14 km in width during the monsoon. At this point, the river forks into dozens of smaller and larger channels flowing around islands, islets and temporary patches of sand. Only a small part of these islands is inhabited, but their fishing settlements, villages, colonial buildings, bridges, as well as waterfalls, ponds, beaches, rice fields and jungle make it one of the most picturesque and unusual places in Laos and throughout Southeast Asia.
