This needs a part 2! It's so strange to me that developers can't make a good standalone Superman game anymore. The last "good" standalone game was Superman Returns & that was like 15+ years ago. Now WB only puts Superman in team games i.e. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Injustice 1 & 2, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. I'm wondering what that canceled Superman game by Rocksteady could've been...
I almost felt like this would have been a good chance to talk about Injustice. I know it's not a Superman game specifically but it's probably the best series of games he's been playable in.
I never did get the chance to play the second Injustice game but I did play the first one I thought that was a really good game and also I got really awesome using Deathstroke as my main go to character
I remember renting Death and Return of Superman on the SNES after reading the comic and a short time after that the newer SuperMan comics came out where he split into two Supermen. That was an interesting run to say the least.
my dad was a big Superman fan and as a kid he got me a ps2, and somehow found this retro store with superman: rise of apocalypse after i begged for it without even knowing anything about it. i’ll always have fond memories of this game, i still spin it up every couple months for nostalgia.
Great fucking work. I love making rules for yourself and sticking to them. It really frames critique as an intellectual exercise, and not the gatekeeping "you're not allowed to like this" rant that anti-critique folks seem to think critique is - at its core. Awesome stuff as always. I never used to sub to channels. As I've said in much older videos of yours in the comments, your channel is the first I ever subscribed to. And I'm very happy about that choice and happy to still enjoy your content ^_^
Highly appreciated, my dude. I'll always be fair to whatever I'm critiquing. Sometimes things are negative, that's just the way it is, but I'll never be negative just for clicks.
This was awesome! The only three of these I played was the arcade game, the genesis game, and the Death and Return game. There is a twitch streamer who has a “pay to play” thing where if you pay him $5-10 he’d play a retro game of the viewer’s choice. I had him play Superman for Genesis. The night after he spent a stream with that, he upped the pay to play to like $25-30. I payed him $30 a few months later to beat it. After about 3-4 days of streams, he did. No save states, just the continues the game gives you. He earned that $. My dad got me into comics with cartoons and movies and stuff. One of my earliest memories is of him and I at a bowling alley playing the Superman arcade game. He had a stool for me. For some reason I thought my player 2 Superman was a black dude and I thought it was so cool to play as this “obscure character”. It wasn’t until my 20’s when I got to play it again and realized it was simply a palate swap lol. Thanks for the episode!
I JUST got shadow of Apokolips the other day! I wish they could've polished it a little more but I enjoy it. I would love to play the cancelled ps1 version of superman64, if they actually did what they wanted and planned originally to do, it would've been a pretty good superman game.
This was a really well made video, Ian. I really hope that one day, we can get an absolute legendary Superman video game on the same quality as Spider Man PS4 or the Batman Arkham series, because there is LOTS of potential for one. While I never played any of his games, I’m very curious now to try Shadow of Apokolips, as I have a soft spot for cell shaded games, especially when it comes to comic characters. Thank you for this one, Ian, and I can’t wait for more of this inspiring series.
It was the middle of the night and I went to a 24 hour Walmart near by looking for a new game. Low and behold.. they had just put out Superman 64. It was in a cool box that had some gold decals on it and it was 69.99+ tax.... So I got it and took it home. Of course the internet was in its infancy at the time so I had no easy access to get any info on the game and only thing I had seen in magazines was previews beforehand because it had literally just came out. Needless to say I was not too happy about it lol!!I was able to take it to a business called Game Exchange and I was able to get around 30 bucks in store credit. They knew it had just came out but did not know how bad it was so I at least got some of the money back.

I was staying over at a cousin's with one of my younger brothers back in '94. He owned a Genesis and had Death & Return of Superman. Couldn't get past the first few levels because of how hard it felt to me back then so just played it for a while and then switched back to play Mortal Kombat 2 with my brother. Many years later, decided to go ahead and play it again emulated (audience booing) but it was the SNES version. ^^;

That Sunsoft 1992 soundtrack is a series of Rockin' BOP'S. I am a big Battletoads fan and Love a good original soundtrack (and like a challenge)...Love seeing more of this series, I don't even like SuperMan that much but you make me like him more with each episode.
I've always said, making a triple A Superman game with Arkham levels of immersion is going to be tricky, because the difficulty doesn't come from thinking how you're going to take down hordes of enemies like Batman. It comes from thinking how you're going to take down hordes of enemies without damaging the civilians or the city around you. Then comes actually balancing combat; common thugs should be absolute fodder to Superman. Sit there and soak up bullets all day, zero consequences. But then you get bigger threats like Intergang, who could take advantage of weaknesses like electricity and soundwaves. That could open the door for a Livewire boss fight. Then you get enemies like Mr. Mxyzptlck capable of magic. Finally, you can take advantage of Kryptonite with enemies like Metallo and Lex Luthor. Only step up from there is enemies genuinely capable out out-brawning Superman like Darkseid and Doomsday.
Would love to see a part two to your video touching on the other Superman games. Like the one for the Atari 2600, that was my first Superman game I played. And not sure if you have done this or not, you might have, a Batman video game retrospective.
I remember playing or owning the first three Superman games you featured on NES, Arcade, and the first Genesis one. My favorite was always the Taito Arcade version. There was an ice rink across town that had the game in it's Arcade that I would play constantly during skating breaks. You had so much freedom with the gameplay, where you could float in side-scrolling mode, throw unlimited charged punches, and use both charged punches and heat vision in flying mode. I think this game came out the same time as the often-forgotten Ruby Spears Superman cartoon that ran on CBS Saturday mornings in 1988, Superman's 50th birthday.
The saddest thing about the Genesis/Megadrive game is that in Easy mode it is quite fun to play yet still challenging, Superman can take more damage and enemies are weaker, however you only can play the two first stages, Sunsoft should have made that the default difficulty and allow players to play the full game with in that setting.
‘Death and Return’ was my first and only Superman game I played until Superman Returns. Returns is a good superman game as far as being able to play as him and have his powers. The free roam and flying mechanics were very well done but it was just pretty lacking everywhere else. I still play it from time to time because it feels so good flying. And I did appreciate their system of making Superman vulnerable as far as having Metropolis be the health bar of sorts.
Superman For Everyone will continue, but it'll remain a hodge podge of topics. I don't want to focus too much on video games on this show. We'll see though.
Great vid as always, Ian. Really glad to see this series return. The only Superman game I've ever played is "Shadow of Apokolips" which I liked because it was so much like the animated series. (Was a bit sad there's no stage on Apokolips.) In terms of future episodes, how about a breakdown of either the animated series (favorite episodes and why) or your favorite Superman villains.
Superman was my favorite arcade game to play when my family would go to Puerto Rico for summer vacation. I really wish that game could be made available on modern consoles, because it really is a lot of fun. I also liked Death and Return of Superman, but I can't beat that game without cheats or save states. It's just unreasonably difficult.
awesome video brotha...i used to love playing superman returns on my xbox 360 and flying around the city, it was fun. Story and gameplay may not have been that great but it was alot of fun finally getting to fly and feel like Superman
WTF my brothers and I finished Death and Return of Superman when we were kids. It's not that hard, mate. It's pretty long though, but that's a good thing. In my country there wasn't anything like cheats or gamesharks or whatever at the time.
How the hell did I miss the Death and Return game for the Genesis? I had the paperback book of the arc and was obsessed. On the flipside, can't say I'm sad I missed Superman 64.
I remember my parents renting Superman 64 from Blockbuster back in the day. I could not even beat the first set of rings he had to fly through. These Superman videos are awesome though.
I honestly LOVED the Superman Arcade game. Use to play it every time I ran across it. Also really enjoyed Death & Return of Superman (I’m a sucker for side-scroller Beat ‘em Ups) though IMO the SNES version is the way to go.
Love to see a follow up video to this. I’m a huge Superman fan. I remember beating Death and Return when I was a kid but I don’t think I could anymore. Sorry no way to get gameplay of that unless I go back in time and use my family’s old camcorders 😂
The fact that you went to galloping ghost fills me with such sadness... I mean duh you're in Illinois but my life feels unfulfilled without going there 😢. Regardless I know superman games ain't easy... looking forward to checking out episode 400 of the podcast later! Also glad to see superman for all again, feels like a passion project more than a click bait idea, I respect that. Cheers to you man
I pretty much had the same experience you had when it comes to Superman 64. I didn't know what my friend had meant when he said it sucked, until I rented it one day and I never got past the second mission where you have to blow the tornados
I’m not a big Superman fan but I still enjoyed the video! Maybe you could do a ranking of the live action portrayals of the Man of Steel, both small and big screen? Great stuff as always
Batman is my favorite super hero i have to admit while i do love the arkham trilogy for the most part they do have flaws. And moments you're scratching your head questioning why did they put this in the game. I am a fan of Superman too i wish some game developer would make a Superman game. The last game where we got to play as Superman was DcvsMortal Kombat and that's if you choose Dc's side. Also i would love to see you delve deeper into the Superman video game series.
I know it gets shit on a lot, but as a kid I absolutely loved justice league task force. Just the thought of all the big dc characters in a street fighter kind of fighting game blew my mind! I had always wished someone had made a marvel game the same way but that was before marvel vs capcom and everything.
I am a huge Superman fan. I've tried every Superman game imaginable (except the Man of Steel IOS game). Superman Returns was possibly the one with the most promise. If you use the cheat codes, nothing could be closer to actually being Superman.
definitely do a Part 2.👍🏻 Interesting note... Superman on the Famicom was the original game. It had a strategy guide. Better soundtrack. And overall seemed a tad more enjoyable to play. The USA version seemed like a stripped down port. Basically the same game as Famicom. With minor differences between the two. So the reason the characters look funny is that is the original Japanese concept. Anyway... My favorite superman games are.... Superman Atari 2600 Superman Famicom Superman Sega Genesis Superman Shadow of the apocalypse PS2 Superman returns PS2
@@616Entertainment yea. Famicom is the more polished game. It has the Superman soundtrack all throughout the game. I was pleasantly surprised that when I went to go to lex luthors lair it started playing The lex luthor theme music. Very fun.🙂 The only problem is the whole game is written in Japanese. So I had to use my phone to translate the text. But the text didn't come out right in the transition. So I had to use an NES walkthrough to make it through the game.
Played the Superman arcade game a ton at the skating rink as a kid. I also liked Death and Return of Superman on SNES, but I could never beat it. Made it pretty far a couple of times though.
The best thing they could do is maybe make a super man tell tale series that would be fun u could play as Clark kent investigation crimes and at certain points switch to super man stopping the crimes
That character you said looks like a rhino actually reminded me of the sarge from Beetle Bailey! 😂🤣 But yeah, I've wanted to play that Death and Return of Superman game for AGES, and after seeing your video, Great Krypton! It looks so freaking accurate to the comics! Got to track it down someday! And if you do a part two, definitely talk about Superman Returns for PS2, I really like that one. It uses so much from the comics, I can't help thinking it was in development before the movie even came along, and they just used tied them together for the sake of convenience, plus maybe a marketing boost.
If I had to choose I'd say I'd like to hear your opinions on favorite superman comic runs. While thinking of new subjects I'm curious of your selection on best on screen adaptations of superman, personally I can't stand Cavill but that's me. I appreciate your passion for the series and I hope this continues dude..
I still have very vivid memories of renting Superman on N64 when I was a kid and just being like... "Well... this is my week now." I've never heard of Shadow of Apokolips. It must've come out the same time around Batman: Vengeance which also felt like a long special or several episodes of Batman TAS. Something they tried to do again with Rise of Sin Tsu, but... it wasn't nearly as memorable for me.
Also, it took me a second, but I noticed the Power Rangers theme in the background of the video lol I spent a couple minutes just going "Where do I KNOW that from?"
Awesome, I was afraid you werent gonna cover the arcade, good man! Theres a bunch of super hero games that were arcade exclusive that are worth playing.
@@616Entertainment I love that Sega Spiderman game with the zoom in and out scaling effect. It had Spider-Man, over course, Hawkeye, Sub-Mariner and Black Cat and they were all really tall and kinda lanky but its a great beat em up that never left the arcade, maybe an 8-bit micro computer got a port but none of the consoles got one.
I bit my tongue on that one, for sure. I feel like with the people that have been let go, the resignations, the cancellation of Blizzcon, it seems (at least from an outsider's perspective) that they're TRYING to right the ship. I hope that's the case.
Also Death and Return was one of my favorite games as a kid(alongside Maximum Carnage). I am almost positive me and my brother beat it, because we played it constantly, but I really doubt I could do it now. With games the way they are, your gaming skills(besides shooting) seem to be much duller with infinite continues, save points and all kinds of other conveniences. But that game was BADASS and it was so cool playing as all the different versions.
One day, there will be an incredible Superman game. It's practically inevitable. Comic games in general have a bad rep, despite Arkham, and besides which... when was the last time a major Superman game came out? I guarantee that while a few jokes would inevitably be made referencing Superman 64 if a badass new trailer for a top-of-the-line Superman game was released, people would still be very, very interested... I really don't think they would dismiss it out of hand because of a 25+ year old game. Nearly anything said in the 'moron voice' is going to sound stupid. A personal pet peeve of mine, but I get it, you were really pissed off, and I enjoyed the video anyway, even if all of those games looked fairly mindless/boring... because while I don't like Superman in general, I *love* Superman and Superman II specifically (the films, of course). I could practically write a novel on why I think those two movies are so amazing, and why Christopher Reeve is the only Superman for me, but don't worry, I won't. ;) Hey, I thought Henry Cavill was amazing in The Tudors, and he seems swell, but... sorry, Christopher Reeve is my ideal Superman! If you made a 'part 2' video of sorts, I'd watch it, for sure! I imagine there is some strange stuff to find. Better to leave it at ONE sequel, maybe, given Superman's history...
I still find interesting, and I can't wrap my head around, how WB simply shuts down every Superman game project pitched by competent teams? I hope WB new project is a Superman game, and I hope it doesnt get canned by WB again(WBM pitched two projects). WB doesn't handle Superman very well, I think the only one going hot is Superman and Lois, pretty good series.
I saw a TH-cam clip of Bill Clinton while he was still president of the U.S 🇺🇸 mentioning the death of Superman. That’s how much of an impact it had on people who grew up reading the comics and watching the super-friends back in the 1980s.
I used to play that PS2 game every day! I used the cheat code to make myself invulnerable so the enemies never lowered my life bar... so I could be like the REAL Superman!
He is also always a baddie nowadays =(
It's extremely frustrating how enamored they are with EVIL Superman these days.
@@616Entertainment I feel like all might is a better character
Down for a sequel video. Definitely need to do Superman Returns . . . the one that ALMOST got a modern Superman game right, but not quite.
I agree. It's so close to what the Arkham games are for Batman.
Super man should gets his own series’ with his character he has lots of good villains and with super man powers it could be a really good fun game
Games WITH Superman can be covered in their own video, don't worry.

Loved the zoom of Superman's dumb face in 64 lol
Hahahaha
You nail retrospectives like this. Seriously, do any topic you like and it will be great.
Thank you, I appreciate that. Got one on Fight Night coming soon.
Death and Return of Superman is one I always enjoyed despite it being so hard. Love to see more Superman videos!
Thanks man, there will be more for sure. Honestly this is performing better than I expected, which really warms my heart.
Returns definitely has some cool ideas in there.
I just noticed the Superman 64 boxart says 1-4 players simultaneously. That's a flat out lie! Great video, btw! Would love a part 2.
Thanks for watching!
I hereby cast my vote to make this a regular series! Do entire videos dedicated to individual games, just like you do with the wrestling games!
(Was a bit sad there's no stage on Apokolips.)
In terms of future episodes, how about a breakdown of either the animated series (favorite episodes and why) or your favorite Superman villains.
Both really, really good ideas. Thanks for watching!
I love that the Power Rangers theme song is playing in the background
Yes!
Dude thank you. Finally someone is owning up to how hard D&R is!
I actually liked Superman Returns. That game is surprisingly good. Yes I played Superman 64 and by God it has earned its infamy.
Hahahha
awesome video brotha...i used to love playing superman returns on my xbox 360 and flying around the city, it was fun. Story and gameplay may not have been that great but it was alot of fun finally getting to fly and feel like Superman
If only it were also on PS3. =/
this is so well made, wishing this channel even more continued success
Thank you man. Much more to come.
WTF my brothers and I finished Death and Return of Superman when we were kids. It's not that hard, mate. It's pretty long though, but that's a good thing. In my country there wasn't anything like cheats or gamesharks or whatever at the time.
The death and return of super man on the snes, and the genesis, were great and i love playing beat em ups
Good call!
How the hell did I miss the Death and Return game for the Genesis? I had the paperback book of the arc and was obsessed. On the flipside, can't say I'm sad I missed Superman 64.
Track it down!
I remember my parents renting Superman 64 from Blockbuster back in the day. I could not even beat the first set of rings he had to fly through. These Superman videos are awesome though.
So, so bad.
I honestly LOVED the Superman Arcade game. Use to play it every time I ran across it. Also really enjoyed Death & Return of Superman (I’m a sucker for side-scroller Beat ‘em Ups) though IMO the SNES version is the way to go.
Dude yes!
Superman 64 was just so disappointing because spiderman had such an incredible game
That Spider-Man game on PS1 and N64 is indeed quite good.
I loved Death and Return of Superman (with the Game Genie) when I was growing up.
The cheatskis!
I had Superman on the Atari 2600 growing up, I can't really remember if it was good or bad, but I do remember the sound effects giving me a headache.
Headache is the perfect word, lol
Another volume please! I played Superman Returns as a kid for DS and loved it
It's a puzzle game!
6:30 I was born in 02 and even I can appreciate this banger of a song😂😂💯
Dude YES!
Love to see a follow up video to this. I’m a huge Superman fan. I remember beating Death and Return when I was a kid but I don’t think I could anymore. Sorry no way to get gameplay of that unless I go back in time and use my family’s old camcorders 😂
You're breaking the gameplay rule, I'm calling the police.
A Superman and Power Rangers crossover would be amazing...Sorry the music in the background makes me think about that idea. 😅
Cheers to you man
You gotta go!
I pretty much had the same experience you had when it comes to Superman 64. I didn't know what my friend had meant when he said it sucked, until I rented it one day and I never got past the second mission where you have to blow the tornados
Gotta learn the hard way, right?
Great video
I actually remember AVGN's episode with the NES Superman game and that part was hilarious, as well as UrinatingTree's video on the Sega Genesis game.
Great AVGN episode. Never heard of UrinatingTree, but if he does Superman stuff, I like that, hahahaha
I’m not a big Superman fan but I still enjoyed the video! Maybe you could do a ranking of the live action portrayals of the Man of Steel, both small and big screen? Great stuff as always
Possible, we'll see!
I would absolutely kill for an Arkham quality Superman game.
Superman was the first arcade I ever bought and I love it. It's like a side sequel to double dragon with flying.
Dude nice!
@@616Entertainment galloping ghost is my mecca as well. I go all the time. Are you Chicagoland?
Great video Ian been looking forward to this. Definetly would like to see a volume 2 of this
Eventually!
Loved playing as Superman in that fighter Injustice.
Injustice is so good.
I know it gets shit on a lot, but as a kid I absolutely loved justice league task force. Just the thought of all the big dc characters in a street fighter kind of fighting game blew my mind! I had always wished someone had made a marvel game the same way but that was before marvel vs capcom and everything.
Oh I love it, too. It's not the best fighting game, super janky, actually, but I still love it.
The super Nintendo and Shadow of Apokolips games were fire
Thanks for watching!
I love me some beat em' ups and Superman fits in very well like a glove. 😍
I am a huge Superman fan. I've tried every Superman game imaginable (except the Man of Steel IOS game). Superman Returns was possibly the one with the most promise. If you use the cheat codes, nothing could be closer to actually being Superman.
I really wish there would've been a PS3 version. =/
finally someone mentions Shadow of Apokolips lol, that game got sent to 205 Live along with that Top Down Justice League beat em up
Hahahaha
Part 2? Yes, please :)
All in due time!
definitely do a Part 2.👍🏻
Interesting note...
Superman Atari 2600
Superman Famicom
Superman Sega Genesis
Superman Shadow of the apocalypse PS2
Superman returns PS2
It's really crazy how big the differences are sometimes, right?
@@616Entertainment yea.
Famicom is the more polished game.
It has the Superman soundtrack all throughout the game.
I was pleasantly surprised that when I went to go to lex luthors lair it started playing The lex luthor theme music. Very fun.🙂
The only problem is the whole game is written in Japanese. So I had to use my phone to translate the text. But the text didn't come out right in the transition. So I had to use an NES walkthrough to make it through the game.
Love the mighty morphin power rangers: the movie sega genesis ost in the background of the video one of my favorite games
Yes indeed!
Yeah, I'd love to see a part 2!
You gotta remember games back then had no DLCs so making it hard to beat extended game play.
Sure, but there’s a difference between effective difficulty and bad design.
Played the Superman arcade game a ton at the skating rink as a kid. I also liked Death and Return of Superman on SNES, but I could never beat it. Made it pretty far a couple of times though.
Dude I love this. Memories.
Was just about to go to bed but nevermind lol
Too late now!
Favorite Superman stories is an episode that's been on the books for a while. Don't worry!
I still have very vivid memories of renting Superman on N64 when I was a kid and just being like... "Well... this is my week now."
I've never heard of Shadow of Apokolips. It must've come out the same time around Batman: Vengeance which also felt like a long special or several episodes of Batman TAS. Something they tried to do again with Rise of Sin Tsu, but... it wasn't nearly as memorable for me.
Also, it took me a second, but I noticed the Power Rangers theme in the background of the video lol
I spent a couple minutes just going "Where do I KNOW that from?"
Hahahahahaha
Awesome, I was afraid you werent gonna cover the arcade, good man! Theres a bunch of super hero games that were arcade exclusive that are worth playing.
Gotta cover the arcadeski.
When you said "You know Blizzard. World of Warcraft, Diablo...." I was expecting the next line to be "Sexual Harassment Allegations"
I bit my tongue on that one, for sure. I feel like with the people that have been let go, the resignations, the cancellation of Blizzcon, it seems (at least from an outsider's perspective) that they're TRYING to right the ship. I hope that's the case.
Superman games weren’t my thing but enjoyed the video. I would watch more for sure
More to come.
Just gonna step into this phone booth real quick. Why you ask? Well uhh…to wait for part two. Yeah that’s it..
Hahahaha
Hell yes make a sequal! Love the man of steel and your content in general bro💪💯
Thanks Austen!
Part 2 is NEEDED!!
Sounds like a must.
It's just outta control hard, man. I've beaten it several times by using like 250 cheats, lol
I could practically write a novel on why I think those two movies are so amazing, and why Christopher Reeve is the only Superman for me, but don't worry, I won't. ;)
Hey, I thought Henry Cavill was amazing in The Tudors, and he seems swell, but... sorry, Christopher Reeve is my ideal Superman!
If you made a 'part 2' video of sorts, I'd watch it, for sure! I imagine there is some strange stuff to find. Better to leave it at ONE sequel, maybe, given Superman's history...
Comic book games don't really have a bad reputation anymore. Spider-Man, Guardians, Arkham, there are plenty of good ones these days.
@@616Entertainment Yeah, true, fair enough. I guess I am getting old.
Oh I need another superman video like this
More to come.
If... Only. If only, man.
I saw a TH-cam clip of Bill Clinton while he was still president of the U.S 🇺🇸 mentioning the death of Superman. That’s how much of an impact it had on people who grew up reading the comics and watching the super-friends back in the 1980s.
Dude I knoooowww.
Shadow of Apokolips is one of the first PS2 games I ever played. I hated the difficulty gameplay but the cutscenes were top notch.
Cutscenes were great, big time.
I used to play that PS2 game every day! I used the cheat code to make myself invulnerable so the enemies never lowered my life bar... so I could be like the REAL Superman!
See now that's the move.
