my theory about the shortcut is that at the point of the ps2 demo they wanted racers to go through the building, but decided to scrap the idea. This would explain the detailed furniture inside, as you would've most likely driven through it
U can see it in the base game, but the demo is worse, but it also depends on the demo patch, there are different ones too not only multiple of ps2 demos but also xbx demos
Olympic city is separated from the earth and aimlessly roams around space, as a result various buildings conveniently moved to block some roads, while other roads are floating around.
Kinda. There was someone who made a video that had them driving around one of the race tracks. They were able to see a different race track that was a part of the Olympic City map but it was floating in the air in the distance and you could see the race barrier.
@@LimiitedChans Do you have a source? I know you can get to the drift tracks from the drag races, and vice versa. Kind of like how the Airport tracks can be accessed from the Bayview Bridge track in UG2.
If only we'd get the map toolkit, maybe restoring, reconnecting and reconstructing all these cut streets and maps for all NFS games altogether might not be so impossible and we could actually get a complete map of Olympic City. Alas, one can only hope.
If I had to guess, free roam is most likely for NFS Underground 2 unless you did what one of the unused "races" in Most Wanted did. It's called *20_2_2_habib_test* (likely named after Art Director Habib Zargarpour) there and the goal is unreachable.
Almost same problem with underground 2, when I used to be younger, on PS2 I'm trying to do super hydraulic and entering runway. Now I knew the map file is just different. Probably we would combine all maps together like bayview bridge, construction site, runway, and URL track
@@bitelaserkhalif I don't think it will work. Someone tried connecting the Bayview Bridge drag track but that track does not fit anywhere on the actual free roam map. It's just it's own thing in an isolated area. Like the URL tracks.

I can agree that. But i think it still can be a highway if theres appropriate textures.Road texture on the center and concrete wall texture on the sides, some highways had slanted walls
completly agree, they made a portion of a highway but don' t have any other ideas to give continue. my other theory is that some drag tracks are parallel to that sewer and the connections are that up bridges like 14 and ave going from the high buildings to the industrial area and some ghettos. i hope some day olympic city get remastered and explore all the corners cause the skybox show that the city is huge.
It doesn't mean there was free roam planned, since the racing is based to be within one city, they probably designed a general layout and then decided which courses will be finally used for racing. Since the game was right after Hot Pursuit 2 and all NFS games before 2003 were single track based, the basic structure of Underground has similarities and remains of Hot Pursuit 2.
I don't know why, but this video is very interesting. It turns out that there were entire streets that were connected by those goofy cropped turns. And when I was a kid, I always wondered why developers didn't make normal streets there. I especially wondered why there is no race that uses that wide road that has always been blocked by red road blocks. Before these blocks, you had to turn into a Japanese-style forest with curvy roads. But this wide road was fully textured and detailed, but never used. I think it was cut down because there were only 700MB CDs and the developers had to cut the content to fit the game onto the disk. Great video. Thanks for nostalgia.
Yet they were able to have NFS underground, as free roam, on disk... Maybe... but likely someone decided it more profitable to save free roam for next game.
That wide road also i terested me as a kid. It was the only complete unrechable road and it wasnt just blocked by a random building, it also connected to a logical place. I had dreams of driving down it
A good question, because we will never see the connector roads in NFS World opened up until the toolkit comes. You can in fact find some textured geometry if you manage to get out-of-bounds, or drive through the barriers with the camper on WorldOnline PL.
Hmm we might be able to restore those textures for a full look at the game but eh... I'm not sure if it was in the GC/PS2 prototypes as well, I didn't take a deep look. Also I'm driving a BUS, deal with it: i.imgur.com/18kWvJU.jpg

There are even a few side roads in the final game that were clealy supposed to be connected as well. It is something that we noticed while working on free roam.
There's a plane starting to lift of sometimes when you drive by the airport corner (the corner with that outer way). So I guess the game stores the plane under the map and when you drive by, it sometimes triggers the plane and it goes through the non solid ground nearby the drivable street.
Wow. Even back then, Black Box wanted to include more but EA's deadlines wouldn't let them. Of course, we couldn't really predict things would turn up like this… that's why the Harry Potter games had to coincide with the movie adaptations' releases, isn't it?
I always loved this "Pocket dimension" trick, when you move the camera to an unused area of the game, and the main part of the map disappears, while exactly the hidden part of the map appears
Looks like before they scrapped the free roam city idea, they layed down all template roads to build the city scenery around them, but when that idea was canceled, only the roads that we know today were used and finished, and instead of removing the unused rest, they just hide them away, probably because it was easier.
absolutely lit boss You can also tell which roads don't have collision because they're a lot darker in colour in comparison to the well-lit roads that do have collisions.
