Meh, the MCU is getting kind of old for the world in general. Lots of people I know have just slowly left from that cinematic universe because the Infinity saga ended and the new movies just sound more of the same with maybe some more visual noise of the now copy-paste epic proportions the universe is at and minus the heroes we know and care about through good development. The future isn't looking great either, the MCU is at a point right now where new characters come out very bland and not worth caring as much about as Iron Man for example.
My biggest complaint with the movie isn’t huge but it’s important to me because I’m Italian. I found some instance of them movie oddly not Italian enough. Luca’s parents are voiced by Mia Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan and it’s so offputting. Also the fact that they don’t call their grandma “Nonna” is such a missed opportunity. I was satisfied with the setting of Portorosso and the characters but I would have liked to know more about their culture other than just “they hate sea monsters and eat pasta” idk maybe have some musicians playing or smthn. I really did like how Guilia said the names of cheeses as if they were saints that was hilarious.
Thing is though, that as the guy who made it said, Italy was just the scene in which the movie took place. It wasn't a movie ABOUT Italy. Like Beauty & the Beast didn't contain information about the culture of that French town. If not for the odd French dialect, it might as well have taken place in any other village from the same time period. Additional "Italian stuff" in the movie would've probably just consisted of more stereotypical stuff than "their cuisine has a lot of pasta" (which, let's face it, isn't exactly an untrue stereotype). I think it's fine just as it is, personally.
Nowdays, the way the internet is, ANY time that any characters show even the SLIGHTEST trait of being friendly to each other, seems to be interpreted as, "They're in love!", or "They're in some kind of romantic relationship!", or that there's "sexual tension or interest". It seems that there are people online who just... NEED characters to be together in more than just being nice or being platonic with each other now. God. Just look at the Brony fandom. It seemed like 70 to 80% of that fandom was obsessed with the characters all being romantically involved with each other, in every combination, despite the fact that it was a kid's show and these characters showed absolutely NO interest in each other beyond, "We're friends.". To the internet, "We're friends" seems to equal, "We're friends... with benefits!".
@@Khalid-ic5hy Every time I encounter a fandom of pretty much anything, it seems like a good 80% of them are like this. Heck, my wife is like this. So I have a hard time thinking that it's just basement dwellers and weirdos. There's too many people doing it to justify that. I think that there's just a large portion of the population that has fantasies that the world works like a romance novel. There's probably some escapist psychological thing going on. "Life is crap and it's never been crappier. The world feels like it's coming apart at the seams. I have to grasp at something I can control to make me feel better. Wouldn't it be nice if these two characters loved each other?". I guess that there's no harm in it. It's just very pervasive in our culture, and the demographic is a lot larger than just basement dwellers and weirdos.
I'm happy they're not in a relationship. It seems like everyone in a movie needs to be in a relationship with someone else and I hate it especially in kids shows, because kids aren't really in relationships. I'm very happy to see some representation of just friends
@@eriklazo5499 true that, a genuine friendship that turned into familial bond and I love it. Als dad left or died and he had no one, luca and maximo and their families fill in the hole in his heart. No romance needed just pure friendship and family.
Honestly, same! And I feel the same way about the girl character too, because it just happens so often, that it's practically expected that the boy character and the girl character would have feelings for one another, and this was honestly very refreshing where *neither* of the boy characters were interested in her that way, and *she* likewise wasn't interested in either of *them* that way, and I really appreciated that. ^^ There didn't need to be *any* kind of romance for this film, because it was just a matter of a bunch of friends having fun during summer. ^^ I just really appreciate the platonic love they all share by the end of the movie, and how Alberto basically becomes Massimo's adopted son, and you can really see their bond grow throughout the credits. ♥️
I don't like how people are forcing them to be gay like can't to guys just be friends every movie doesn't need to be about dating just let two guys be friends.
What I loved about this movie is that it isn't trying to be this next big thoughtful masterpiece like other classics such as Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Inside Out, Finding Nemo, etc.
It really annoys me that every fictional character who Struggles With Not Fitting In is automatically interpreted as a metaphor for being gay. Eeven the X-Men, who're explicitly meant as a metaphor for _racism_ . EDIT: And then there's the fact that whenever an _explicitly_ LGBT character or couple turns up, there are always those people and sites who act like it's the first time a writer has ever done that.
The concept of the outsider is a simple and relatable concept that is very easy for the audience to interpret. The issue is media is taking their own interpretation and saying they are right and everyone else is wrong. I'm open to different opinions, but parading them around as fact is never okay.
@@theotherjared9824 Yeah, but sometimes you can have an "interpretation" that's simply flat-out _wrong._ I mean if there's one thing I've learned from conspiracy theorists, it's that you can read anything into anything if you jump through enough hoops. If the writer intended something to mean X, then it means X, plain and simple (barring of course _bad_ writing that prevents it from really _working_ as a metaphor for X). Talking about how to "interpret" a work, character, or narrative is only valid when the writer intentionally left it _open_ to interpretation.
@@benthomason3307 All that goes into artist interpretation. If the artist says their work is about a specific thing, then there absolutely is a right and wrong interpretation. If the work is intentionally vague, then I don't think a "wrong" interpretation exists in that case.
The fact we needed the director who based this on his "lived experience" to come out can tell the media the kids aren't gay is telling. Why can't we just have close characters, same sex or not, that have platonic relationship?
- minority allegories - the similarities to Call Me By Your Name - behavior that be seen as either friendly or romantic - releasing during pride month - *the whole coming out as a sea monster* You can't be surprised that LGBTQ+ people relate to it and see it as a failure of Disney to provide some representation.
@@YouScareMe1 Best part is that if this was supposed to be a gay rep film, you think Disney wouldn't talk about it? According to Clownfish TV, Disney would not have passed this opportunity for woke points given that every other gay rep character is thier "first". In the same video by Clownfish TV, they mention that Pixar never did a movie about kids being kids so that's why the film exists from a business sense.
This one caught me off guard. It was adorable, light-hearted and very small scale. It's nice to just have a relaxing little story like this come out of Hollywood for a change. It's a breath of fresh air.
im pretty sure the whole 'human that turns into a fish person when wet' was the plot of a movie/show im pretty sure i watched on the disney channel during the hannah montana days
Personally I thought it would’ve been interesting if more of the townspeople were fish people and they revealed themselves in the end to protect or standby Luca and Alberto. This would’ve further pushed the theme of acceptance and not judging someone based on appearance. Just my opinion.
Sounds too much like Insmouth for my liking. Gives the humans(and the adult Audience with good taste in fiction)a very good reason to dislike the fish monsters
Well, not all movies need high stakes, what's wrong with having low stakes which it seems the movie activilly wanted, the movie didn't want a grand plot about saving the town, just a simple plot of two teens wanting to get a motorbike.
The director commented on people saying Luca is a gay allegory, he said "The story is about two young boys who are at a age before you begin to think about romance." So really it's a story about kids experiencing the world.
The goblin turned on the stove to cook one of those idiots and eat them but then they scraped that idea but forgot to remove the goblin turning on the stove clip

And people dont seem to realize that Italian are stereotyped for expressing themselves with their hands and being really tactiles. we french really like to express ourselves with our hands bur less than them.
I actually thought the villain was kinda good it’s at least a clear villain character unlike most movies today who want to have unseen force, twist villain or no villain so it was decently refreshing
"Unless you just wanna interpret literally any instance of two male characters being friends as a gay relationship." Yes, yes that's exactly what they do.
My dude he sold his bike to send Luca to school Who you gonna do that for, who's doing that for you Go watch a video essay about why it's an analogy cripes
@@XøchíAngel Who you gonna do that for? Close friends who've already sacrificed for you, and who you are therefor willing to sacrifice for in turn. Maybe you're a cold-hearted bastard who can't see yourself doing anything charitable for a person unless they're letting you shove your hotdog in them, but ordinary people do things like this all the time for people they care about without being romantically involved with them. Again, not every instance of two same-sex (or opposite sex) characters showing consideration for each other means they secretly want to screw. This was common knowledge back in the day before Tumblr.
@@XøchíAngel I've done some similar things for my best friend. My friends are my real family, and if you really think having friendships that are more than that because they went out of their way to do something important for them, you must have some really shit friends.
@@XøchíAngel if it’s an analogy for anything, it’s a romantic relationship getting in the way of an already existing broship. It’s literally about a girl getting between their friendship and them learning to deal with that, it’s frankly a very common trope seen in other movies. Off of the top of my head, it’s basically the plot of Ted if you squint at it, the details are different but it’s all roughly there.
My take: It's an innocent, low stakes movie that is easy to enjoy the whole way through. I'm sick of high stakes, save-the-world movies as they've been the only ones produced for the past few years and it's getting very old. It was also refreshing to have a truly bad villain for once (not another freaking twist), but they should have punished him more at the end as just getting wet just isn't a satisfying retribution. The limpdick dad also drove me nuts, there hasn't been a single real father figure in movies for a while with even an ounce of meat to show for it. Gulia's dad made up for Luca's father, but it still bugs me to no end. They wouldn't have even needed to change his role as a distracted dad, they could have just had him too busy with work or hobbies to be present in the family. I also think that Gulia's dad should have gone with Luca to find Alberto after he ran off, though I know it would have changed the flow a bit, it would have been a good point to explain why, at the end, Alberto wanted to stay with him (he would have a closer connection after such a heart to heart moment). Now on to the bigger issue, the community. Because it's pride month, the LGBTQ+ community is especially bold so I understand why the ship is a thing. But I hate that such a tiny minority of the population is able to skew the whole point of movies and TV. I wish they could be OK with just living their lives for once, but nobody cares about them anymore so the bad actors in their community act up to get more attention. The same things happen in political and religious circles, and it drives me nuts. Just be happy with who you are without shoving it down the throats of those who disagree with you. Also, it is considered pedophilic to ship children in any way, no matter what month it is or who you are. Though it's obviously not punishable by law, just know that you've taken part in a pedophilic action (especially since they are confirmed not to be gay). Let that settle in for a minute.
Late to the party but I agree. Why is 5% of the US screwing up an industry? Then again another 2% is kind of in charge of entertainment and a lot of other things in the US. Anyway, I like how Luca felt like a Ghibli movie. Calming really.
@@nairbgolden2008 because they didn't if you actually looked into these people you learn they not only have no personality they have no true friendships, I mean it it's sad
I mean why are people historically afraid of sea monsters? They don’t even exist and yet people still used to fear them. I don’t really think it’s too out of left field for some fishing town to have their own myths and stories regarding them, and then fear them because of what they made up.
Or really just in general. I mean, think about it. This is an unknown species, an aquatic monster with unknown intentions. Who knows how smart or powerful it is? Who knows what it might think of humans? Who knows what it wants? The only thing we know about sea monsters is that, if they do exist somewhere, they might’ve killed/eaten/drowned some people.
There are those deep ocean almost 30ft tall squid things certain whales like to eat.. can't remember the name of the whales but you can see on older ones hideous scarring around their heads and mouths they get from hunting those things.. they pretty much classify as deep sea monsters..
Fool it has "pine" in the name so it obviously only grows in trees in cold climates, not to mention the second part of the word is "apple" which reinforces that it's produced by trees. Don't trust everything you see on the internet
We do know actually, it was a scrapped scene where the Goblin would have cooked the guy he killed and eaten him, but it got removed, but the part where he turned on the stove got left in somehow. At least, that's my best guess.
This Pixar movie was a good time! A simple, charming, slice-of-life story about a sea creature with the ability to turn into human form when he gets dry! Doesn't try to be anything other than that and does a real good job at it... and without too many contrivances like some other movies like Inside Out, Coco and Soul (as great as those movies are) tend to have at times! It may not reach the heights of those Pixar flicks, but still great fun! And it's been released for free on Disney+, so be glad about that!
3:06 That's always the case. Anthony Mackie now is getting blasted on Twitter for denying the gay ship between Falcon and Winter Soldier. Even though the two characters just seem to have ye' old buddy cop dynamic.
I actually like how simple the movie is. I still like the Pixar films where the characters go on some sort of quest grand quest, but what slightly lowered my enjoyment of those films like, for example, Coco, is the plot contrivances. Like, they need to space out these emotional beats around the movie, so to do that they just place roadblocks around so it doesn't fly by. First Ernesto is supposed to be at a rehearsals, but he isn't. Hector doesn't have any special access to the backstage of the performance, so to reunite Miguel with Ernesto, they need to go to a music competition. But they don't have a guitar. So they head over to a dude who does have one, Chicharron. But he doesn't give it to them right away, so Hector plays him a song. They then head back to the show, but as Miguel seems to be winning, his family shows up right then and there and Hector finds out he was being lied to. Miguel then runs away, but he can't enter into the big party Ernesto is running, so he has to ask for a favor from the actual winners of the competition. I could go on for a little bit, but I think you get it. Luca on the other hand, doesn't really have that issue. It feels very slice-of-lifey, and the story flows pretty naturally. Pixar hasn't ever really done a simple, fun movie, and I like that Luca is just that. Makes the movie more special imo.
I really liked Luca. It's rare for Disney to make films with good morals, or for film studios to make movies about genuine and pure male friendship in general these days. Edit: basically, I think it's a solid children's film without woke politics or encouraging complete degenerate behavior. It's not amazing, but it's good.
I understand there's a lot of people forcing a certain narrative on characters, but when you get down to it when do you actually see these types of relationships culminate into a genuine gay relationship? You're absolutely right that two guys can be good friends and that's perfectly fine, but when does media ever let it go beyond that lol.
It’s due to society being very sexist by implying that two men being affectionate towards each other is a sign of gayness. What makes this worse, many gay fetishists will reinforce these beliefs while claiming to “stand up” for gay men.
@@Gyovanny7080 not really sexist...i believe..i feel like celebrating of sexuality is clouding people's judgements on how they perceive other individuals.. and their personal thoughts...so they think that these kids are gay because of "pride month" and around that corner they want every company out there to celebrate with them and get mad vice versa when they promote and market pride...so it's eh.
@@grownmystical8796 The reason why I said it was sexist is due to how men showing affection towards anyone (male friends) is stigmatized and is seen less “manly”. The people who ship these characters are reinforcing these beliefs and are fetishizing male affection.
@@Gyovanny7080 You are correct. It is due to a sexist notion that two men can't be close friends without them being gay. I remember growing up in the 90's and seeing this very same thought process all through out school. I believe it was the same way throughout many forms of media as well.
2:50 I swear they always do this. Nothing can just be what it is, there has to be some political message. "Oh the lion king is against progressivism, so that movie is bad" "oh this movie is an allegory for gay" "oh this character, they are trans. They where the whole time." Like, I feel like this allegory and rhetcon crap has happened so often that people just *assume* its the case at this point.
I don’t understand how it’s seen as a gay allegory. Like I get that it has a “coming out” element as some would say that Luca and Alberto have to come out of the water and blend in with the human world, but this has nothing to do with sexuality even though coincidentally it is about two boys. The allegory would work much better if it was about immigrants coming into a new nation and trying to fit in where immigrants a looked down upon. This makes much more sense as even Lucas’ parents and grandmother are accepted at the end for being fish people. The moral of the story would be that it’s okay to be proud of your heritage in a new land, even if certain people want you to conform and assimilate.
The "hiding your identity" theme doesn't really work for an immigrant narrative, but it fits a queer one perfectly. Also this movie uses a lot of standard romantic movies tropes in the scenes with Luca and Alberto (them staring together at the sunset, the train scene at the end, etc...). Also there are semantics choices (they use a lot words like identity, acceptance, and shame) that are pretty common in queer discourse. Finally, as a Bi, Non-binary person, I can assure you that this movie represented very well my first gay crush, the internalized homophobia that I had to conquer and the process of coming out of my shell. I'm not saying hat Luca and Alberto are undoubtely gay for each other, but that a queer reading of the film isn't just possible, but is also very very easy and feels intentional on the part of the filmakers
@@appleglassjuice11 No one's against people interpreting Luca as a queer allegory (except for homophobes). People are against how some insist how their interpretation is established canon, despite the fact it's confirmed otherwise.
The art style of this movie seemed off to me for the longest time and I couldn’t quite put my finger on why. Your comparison with the grub hub people made me finally understand.
Can we please stop comparing new animated movies to a stupid commercial people memed the heck out of? This looks way better than that, a lot of movies do, in fact!
@@VigilanteLulu The majority of recent animated films have not been compared to Grubhub. I don’t remember people comparing Lightyear to Grubhub. People don’t really throw around the term Grubhub when talking about Minions, Hotel Transylvania, wreak it Ralph, or Madagascar despite having a more exaggerated art style.

Enjoyed the movie as much as you did with equal feelings with the problems. There were other issues I had with it as well, but the biggest (which really doesn't bring down the whole movie for me) is that the character the movie is named after doesn't feel like he has any motivation. Luca himself feels like he's almost a shell of a character thats getting dragged around by others. I would've actually preferred more if the movie focused a bit more on Alberto since he might have trust issues with everyone and may fear not being accepted by others after being abandoned and only Luca is the closes he considers good enough friend to be family. Thats just an idea that sounds good in my head but may not have worked in the movie. Overall still a better movie than most movies for adults these days (cough, cough Cruella cough).

I'm happy they're not in a relationship. It seems like everyone in a movie needs to be in a relationship with someone else and I hate it especially in kids shows, because kids aren't really in relationships. I'm very happy to see some representation of just friends

There didn't need to be *any* kind of romance for this film, because it was just a matter of a bunch of friends having fun during summer. ^^
I just really appreciate the platonic love they all share by the end of the movie, and how Alberto basically becomes Massimo's adopted son, and you can really see their bond grow throughout the credits. ♥️

How dare you, you LGBT bigot!
I mean, Marvel is super pro-lgbtq but i see why people are mad that everyone is mad about the "Fans"

Same. The film was great but that would’ve made its theme much stronger
Agreed, the two that did pop out from the crowd was a nice touch, but more could’ve been added.

Well, not all movies need high stakes, what's wrong with having low stakes which it seems the movie activilly wanted, the movie didn't want a grand plot about saving the town, just a simple plot of two teens wanting to get a motorbike.

It’s literally about a girl getting between their friendship and them learning to deal with that, it’s frankly a very common trope seen in other movies. Off of the top of my head, it’s basically the plot of Ted if you squint at it, the details are different but it’s all roughly there.
@@keiichi8191 I'm prescribing you with a sexual awakening, go have a gay summer crush n call me when it rains in hell 🌟

This movie looks decent. But I'm more of a Dreamworks fan than Pixar fan.
I like old Pixar more than new Pixar. Modern Pixar's artstyle is almost the same for every movie they make, and it's a real shame.
True patricians taste
Tbh this sounds like a decent easy watch to me. Some good ol time without any heavy topics, real life already offers enough of that.
I really liked Luca. It's rare for Disney to make films with good morals, or for film studios to make movies about genuine and pure male friendship in general these days.
Edit: basically, I think it's a solid children's film without woke politics or encouraging complete degenerate behavior. It's not amazing, but it's good.
they're kids, they should not be portrayed in a relationship - sincerely, a trans gay dude.
Say that to movies who do it with straight kids for some reason lmao
I just realized this movie is a unintentional prequel to Shadow Over Innsmouth
I WAS THINKING THE SAME
Why can’t two male characters just be friends or a bromance
They where the whole time."
Like, I feel like this allegory and rhetcon crap has happened so often that people just *assume* its the case at this point.
Some people can see it, some people can't. If queer people can relate themselves to this movie then let them.
@@appleglassjuice11 I suppose. I have no problem if that’s how they feel.
