    Something that has always bothered me in this case is that the dogs couldn’t pick up Asha’s scent because “the rainstorm washed the scent away”. I’ve heard and read that tracker and cadaver dogs smell scents even better when it’s wet or rainy because the water actually amplifies the scent for them. Something about how canine noses need a lot of moisture to function the best. I mean police take sniffer dogs in boats over lakes and rivers and even beaches to try to search for victims. No one to blame here, but I thought that detail was always very strange. The entire case is. Thanks for covering it!

      I think the issue is the volume of rain and the wind. This was apparently a very wild storm. Scent dogs can find it hard to pick up a scent in running water.

      I know a lot of people are pointing out that she could've been groomed by someone who had access to her (extended family, church member, someone associated with the basketball team). Someone that she and the family trusted enough to spend time with her, possibly alone, to facilitate grooming. Maybe she was picked up in a car initially, then walked for a bit. Who knows.

    This case is so weird! My sister is the same age as Asha and she is so scared of the dark that she needs a nightlight. It’s just so baffling that a 9 year old did this. I feel like either someone lured her out or she was running away from something. It’s so strange!

    • @maracuja320
      @maracuja320 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Asha was exteemely scared of the dark, storms AND dogs. Why would she have left all on her own if no one was talking her into doing so? Someone must have talked her into this "plan". Poor Asha 😓

    • @RealElongatedMuskrat
      @RealElongatedMuskrat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Clark Ingram you make some really excellent points here. She could've been groomed or abused by someone close to her, maybe not immediate family but a community member that the family trusted, and the abuser told her that if the family found out she would be punished, that she'd go to hell or that they'd tell the church and everyone would know she was doing sexually things. I know from my own childhood that when my father told me the mental and physical abuse was my fault, I believed him. There's no reason why Asha wouldn't believe this person if they were a well liked community member and told her these things. Maybe they threatened to tell on her and said that everyone would believe them over her, so she decided she had to run away. Poor baby.

  • @CC-mc9dw
    @CC-mc9dw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +131

    IMO I think maybe she was groomed by someone via her church, her school, someone on her pathway to home, or someone via her basketball team, it could even be a relative (I'm not implying just her parents, it could be an older cousin or uncle/aunt) or family friend or someone connected that way. Also what about her friends from school? Maybe she planned to meet up with another student to go on their adventure and on her way she was preyed upon by someone.
    I think she was trafficked.
    I hope she is found one day!💔

      Statistics back your theory up too, overwhelming evidence shows that the vast majority of child groomers / molesters are someone the child is related to. Someone who has access to them, someone they and the parents trust to spend alone time with the child. Terrifying to think that it was someone in their inner circle who's never been found out and is pretending to be concerned.

    The Tweety kiddie bag makes this so much sadder for me. She really was just a tiny child. Also, I was also a quiet, shy kid. When I get invested in books or get some wild idea, though, there was little anyone could do to stop me. I don't doubt that she wanted to have an adventure, perhaps also fueled by her first loss, and came across a malicious adult who either killed her or trafficked her. My heart breaks for her and her family.

    Being a "latchkey kid" in the US is really common. Some elementary school's in my city had after school programs where they could "stay out of trouble" until parents could pick them up.

    • @georgiamarie_

      @@meljstephan I worked in one in Delaware, probably similar to the one your mom ran because it was for the same reasons (dangerous area, parents working and nowhere for the kids to go so ample opportunity for the kids to get into trouble fighting on street corners or getting groomed by gangs).

    • @Steve_V1066
      @Steve_V1066 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Back in my day (60s and 70s) it was very common. From first grade when I woke up my mom was already gone to work and I had to get myself ready for school. No one would be home until later in the evening. I fed myself. In the summertime I didn't have anyone watching over me, so I'd hop on my bike and ride for miles across Los Angeles to see if friends could play. No prepared meals, no money... I ended up getting a job at a liquor store at 12 years old, the owner felt bad for me and lett me stock shelves and carry out people's orders to their car.
      At least I could afford food. At 12 I knew every kind of liquor and what was good, so it kind of became a gag that people would come in and ask a 12 year old what wine went with chicken, and what was the best single malt scotch...
      It was a different time. Not better, just different.

    • @RhonyLynn
      @RhonyLynn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Way back when the phrase started, it began because the “latchkey kids” were easily identified by the key that their parent(s) would somehow “latch” to their outer clothing so they didn’t loose it. Unfortunately as child abductions became more known, parents had to become more subtle about where their kids kept the key.

I hope her family gets answers soon!

    • @RealElongatedMuskrat

      I agree, i think if she was trafficked initially and not killed on the night or shortly after, she probably would've been killed by now because one word from her as a teenager or adult could bring down a whole pedophile ring. I don't think she could still be alive right now, but it reminds me of jonny gosch (I think that's his name?). He went missing as a child and his mother says a man came to see her that she believed was jonny, he told her he'd been trafficked and was still in the trafficking ring so he couldn't come home or else she'd be killed in addition to him, but he wanted to let her know that he was okay. So I think his mum believes that man was her son and that he'd still alive but now stuck in a child trafficking ring, unable to leave because of the danger. I don't know what to make of that one but maybe it could be true, maybe it's the same thing happening in this case.

    I can't really get behind the "she left for an adventure" deal. Like this is a little introverted, shy girl; she's scared of dogs (and probably the dark). As a kid, I was much like her. I was very sheltered and shy of people I didn't know, but I desperately wanted to go on an adventure. Even though I really wanted to go on an adventure, I certainly wouldn't leave while it was freezing raining. If she did leave to "go on an adventure" why THAT night? It was raining in February. I live just south of NC and February is cold here. It usually hangs around 35-40 degrees F during February. The idea that a little girl (not even a pre-teen) didn't have a specific place to go for a specific reason leaves at 4AM to walk several miles in the rain and dark seems too far fetched for me. If she just wanted to go on an adventure, why did she have to leave that night? Why not any other night that wasn't raining. Other than the storm, her mom suggests that it's a normal night. If she was doing it because she was upset about the game, why didn't she leave the night of the game? Something made her go outside that SPECIFIC NIGHT. If she didn't have a reason for it to be that night, she probably would have chickened out and tried it some other night.
    I agree with a lot of other commenters that it seems like someone groomed her to leave, but the thing that gets me hung up on this theory is: why didn't they meet her closer to the house? Like this is a 9 yr old. If you're a pedo that's been grooming her, do you really trust that she's: (1) going to actually meet you outside in the freezing rain (2) going to be able to walk a couple of miles to get to you? (3) not mention any of this to anyone? According to the Farmer's Almanac for that night in Shelby, it was 34 degrees F. That's only 1 degree above freezing. If it weren't for the multiple people that saw her walking in the rain I would refuse to believe a sheltered 9 year old would think to herself "Dark, 4AM, freezing rain? Yup, totally the perfect time to pack my bag and go meet _______". All I can think is that the person was afraid of having their car seen too close to that house. Which seems like it has to be someone that the family knows well and would be recognized if their car were even sitting at the end of the street.
    BTW, I don't exactly think this case is over done. I'm a true crime junkie and I didn't hear about it until about 3 years ago and I live barely a 3 hr drive from her. This isn't a Madeline McCan or a JonBenet. It's so rare that missing little black girls get the attention they deserve. Thanks for covering her case.

    We also used to read a lot of adventure novels, which had a huge impact on us, but we never ended up actually running away (bc then my baby sister was born and my friend's family got a dog) despite planning it for at least a year.

    I have always thought she was meeting an adult she trusted. Kids her age who actually run away, are found fairly quickly and close to home. She also packed for a very short trip and as if shee had a specific plan about where she was going. I know her parents kept her a bit isolated but she still knew teachers, staff, coaches, neighbors. I think she was lured out, perhaps for a surprise for her parents anniversary. I really hope her case is solved some day.

    Really strange. The fact that she was such a timid girl to the point where she was afraid of the dark makes me think that someone lured her out of her home. Maybe an adult she knew promised to help her with her basketball practice, but then this person actually had much more sinister intentions and abducted and/or killed her. I feel horrible for her and her family, I hope the truth comes out and her case is solved soon.

    • @RealElongatedMuskrat
      @RealElongatedMuskrat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, I was very timid as a child, quite sheltered goody two shoes type and the idea of running away was just inconceivable to me when I was a child. Mostly for the fear of getting in trouble, I didn't even think beyond that to more sinister things. As most groomers are people that have the trust of the family and the child in order to gain access and spend a decent amount of time with them, I think it must've been someone the family knew in the community. And they were involved in a lot of activities in the community, so that's a lot of people to potentially groom Asha. Perhaps it was a relative of a family friend, someone she knew but not close enough to the family that they'd think of this person when police asked about who had contact with her. Or maybe it was her own idea but then someone could've pulled over who was connected to someone she knew, and said "oh I'm Mr ___'s nephew, I'll give you a ride, don't worry I won't tell your parents so you don't get in trouble" and then it went from there. Maybe she didn't know the person but they could list familiar names off to make her feel comfortable.

    • @protonmonkey
      @protonmonkey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RealElongatedMuskrat Yes, exactly my thoughts. It might have been someone she and her family knew but didn't know well enough to get the police to investigate them. I'm wondering if maybe the unidentified little girl in that photo that was found in the shed is the missing connection to all of this that could crack the case wide open. Maybe if someone did groom Asha and lure her out of her neighborhood, they had a daughter, niece, or cousin similar in age to her and that's how they lured her out, by saying something like "I have a little girl who's your age, maybe you can be friends with her, I'm sure your parents know us from church and wouldn't mind". Sometimes that happens, predators have kids of their own that they use to manipulate other kids into complying with them.
      This is just total speculation though, I don't have any evidence to back this up and could be completely wrong.

    Georgia Marie, could you do a video on the disappearance of Suzanne Lyall? She was a college student who disappeared in March 1998 from the University at Albany in the State of New York. After she got out of work at a computer store in a local mall, she took the short bus ride back to her college campus, but then suddenly and mysteriously vanished without a trace between the bus stop and her dorm room. It was a fairly well-known case here in the Northeastern United States back in the late 1990's to early 2000's, but it may not be quite as well-known in other countries. It is one of the most baffling cases I've ever heard. Thanks so much for your content! Keep of the AMAZING work!!

    Hi Georgia, great video as always. I truely hope her family find answers. There is a case in Australia about a missing woman named Helen Munnings who disappeared after her boyfriend supposedly dropped her off at a beach. She was last seen in 2008 and I believe she is presumed dead. Her family suspect her boyfriend, who is incredibly suspicious. He has both motive as Helen was pregnant with his child, but he had a family at home. And his movements were incredibly strange that night. He randomly, in the middle of winter, dressed in shorts, went out in a boat in the ocean right after he saw her. The case was completely bungled at the beginning and it’s incredibly possible there was even a coverup since police never forensically tested his car and only searched his house a year later. He even had scratches on his arm that were never photographed. He was also abusive in the past and started dating Helen when she was fifteen and he was 31. Please consider covering this case! Her loved ones really deserve answers. Thanks for taking the time to read.

      @@alicel8197 I've been studying the case for a while, my two thoughts start the same way really, she was going to meet someone, I feel possible grooming from someone, and the two part ways at, the person grooming her took her and got rid of her items and had her, or the on her way to meet the person she was taken by someone else, someone purposefully buried her backpack, but only a fraction of her items were missing. Its never sat right with me, but as someone raised in church(no longer) and whom did home schooling I noticed a lot of the children in stricter situations would blossom with any kind of attention from outside people. And often times were envious of other kids. I don't feel as if she is going to be found alive but I heavily feel she isn't as far from where they discovered her back pack. I feel it was someone who wasn't as educated in how dna works but they knew to bury the evidence, I would say they should perhaps use some of the sonar technology if possible to go over the area sorounding the back pack. But I myself don't wish any of that did happen. I feel that maybe it wasn't the first time the people who took her had taken someone, it's just so sad. Every time I drive through that area I say a good word of love for the family and the little girl. We were very close in age.

    Great video Georgia! I've been wanting you to make one on this case for ages. I think it's so sad how Asha doesn't get much mainstream coverage, which I'm sure is because she's Black. I've seen a lot of excellent write-ups on Reddit, but probably the one I found most interesting had to do with the kerosene heater. Apparently, kerosene can cause there to be an abundance of carbon monoxide, which can cause strange behavior and even hallucinations. I think it's possible the kerosene heater being on cause Asha to develop some weird ideas of adventure and venture outside of the house. It is also possible the carbon monoxide caused the parents some mental confusion, which may be why the timeline is so complicated.

It was announced beforehand that the bookbag was found with items unfamiliar to the family, so the photos were released in 2018 to see if anyone had any idea where they came from. The shirt is apparently a limited edition or otherwise just not common, so they're hoping someone knows who it originally belonged to.

CPS took the remaining child and said the grandparents needed to keep him till they figured it out. The grandparents automatically gave the brother back to the parents immediately without authority knowing. There was a go fund me started and as soon as the eyes were slightly off them, the parents took a vacation with that money. With both parents looking for the child, no one found him until the cops seen his shadow under the pool covering (that was closed). To this day most of the family doesn't believe the parents because they always said they wanted a boy and a girl. The next baby was a girl and life has returned to normal now. Smh This happened in Albemarle, NC.

    Could you please cover the case of Emani Moss? She was an African American girl who lived in Georgia, USA - who was verbally and physically abused by her stepmother. This is a solved American murder case. Her stepmother and father were charged and convicted; nearly two years ago.
    I've never seen any True Crime TH-camr cover this case. This case isn't well known, but it's most commonly known by those who live/lived in Georgia.
